Remarkable Machine for the Money

This is a delightful machine. It's everything one could hope for at a giveaway price. For a small shop, where planing is not an everyday event, it's unbeatable. It's much larger than one would expect; actually, it's larger than most higher powered, higher priced planers. It is quite solidly built. The outer housing uses Lexan (a tough plastic form) instead of metal, but you'd never know it, it's so tough, and the housing is rust proof, to boot. The innards are solid as a rock. It is a four-post model, and the castings are so tight and solid that there is virtually no play in the cutterhead-feeder mechanisms. The blade changes are amazingly simple, the tools to do so are provided and stored in the machine, and while there are only two blades, they are reasonably priced (average $40 pair for Delta Brand, less for third party brands). The head makes 9400 RPM, for 18,800 cuts per minute. I tested it starting with soft Pine, then standard American Walnut, each at 1/16" cuts (one full revolution of the handle). The motor did not slow, there were virtually NO planer marks, and NO snipe. The pieces were about 6" wide and 2' long. I then tried the same with white rock maple, expecting a motor overload and freeze. The motor slowed only slightly, but did not falter. Testing it to the extreme, I tried Purpleheart (with a respirator mask, which you MUST wear when making dust with this wood). This is about the hardest wood available. The motor strained too much to suit me at 1/16" cuts, so I reduced the cut to 1/32 (1/2 turn of the handle). There was not slowing, and again, no snipe. With 13" blades, an extremely rapid cut, and effective dust collector (I just connected it directly to my Shop Vac) and NO snipe whatsoever, the occasional user in a home or hobby shop cannot find a better machine at this price anywhere. I love it! I make TONS of small fretworked boxes, and am sick of buying exotics for fretwork in 1/4 thicknesses. I can now buy 3/4 thicknesses, rip them with my bandsaw, and quickly plane them to 1/4 or thicker, at half the price. Pros: - extremely accurate (I had perfect results down to 1/8"; did not try further) - solid, tight build of the 4-post cutterhead assembly/support columns - reversible blades, giving you two very sharp shots with the same set - EXTREMELY attractive price - Five year warranty (but if you're not within driving distance of a major city, you must ship it in at your own cost) - Perfect for hobbyists or small shop. Cons: - The motor could be more powerful. The in/out feed rate is perfectly appropriate and dependable, but a larger capacity motor would help with hardwoods. - It is single speed feed. It is a compromised speed between the two speeds found on higher price machines, but it is a well-thought speed to do a remarkable job with two straight (not spiral cut) blades. These "cons" about this machine are really not pertinent, because these features are found only on machines costing twice as much. This one is a steal. You may read about the virtues of a "chain drive" (e.g, "Steelex" brand). Don't buy into that. This machine appears to be direct (geared) drive (I've not looked at the parts sheet), and has a motor overload reset button. It'll do what you need doing. This is a SMALL SHOP planer, not designed for 8-hour/day use seven days a week, or in commercial cabinet shops. That in view, I'd do it again in a second, and recommend it even faster. Follow up: I've now planed all four surfaces of eight 8-foot x 6" sq. hardwood posts (32 8-foot x 6-inch surfaces). Aside from the trouble of rigging in and out feed tables, it was a breeze. Great planer results

I have put about 500 BF of rough cypress through this little planer to make my front porch. Most reviewers of all planer models complain of poor blade life, but during my project the blades were never flipped and faced numerous knots in the wood and still leave a perfect planed surface. I am going to flip the blades once I finish planing the stair treads for this project out of sympathy for the planer, but I am not expecting to get anything better than my already fantastic planing passes. I have this planer hooked up to a simple shop vacuum and the chip chute doesn't clog even when planing a full 12" wide board. Recommendations for first timers like me: -Mount this planer to a solid surface. -Have someone there to help if you're planing boards longer than 8'. -Don't try to take too big of a bite out of boards with each pass. I normally only lower the blades 1 full rotation of the handle between passes. -Don't have any other electronics running on the same breaker as this planer when it is running. (Shop vac + Planer = tripped breaker). -Dust management is vital. Don't even think about running this thing without a vacuum or dust collector connected to it. I had never even seen a planer in person before ordering this one. This is a very simple machine to operate/maintain and has stood up great to my incompetency torture test. ... show more

Great tool!

I am an intermediate woodcrafts person who had longed to add a planer to my tool collection and had been browsing, pricing and reading reviews of many of them when I happened upon this model. This planer is exactly as it was described in the reviews and is everything I had hoped for. It arrived as promised on schedule and I was grateful to see the box was fully intact. I had never operated a planer before but was pleased to find out how user friendly this was. By the time I was feeding the 3rd cedar fence board through I already felt very comfortable and capable. I loved how it made those inexpensive boards look so beautiful. I was also pleased that this planer didn't require any adjustments because there wasn't any snipe at the ends of the boards A lesson I learned quickly though was that our shop vacs fill up rather quickly with the shavings and if I don't stop to empty it they can get jammed in the hose. Now I know If it starts shooting the shavings out the front the shop vac is full! It is super easy to take the dust collector off of the back of the machine to clear it and replace it. The tools to replace the blades when the time comes are conveniently attached to the planer safely, but in plain sight. I also ordered the Delta stand model 22-592. It wasn't pre-drilled for this model but still worked well. A perfect match for a great tool! ... show more

Out of the box, this planer works really well on softwoods. It also works well on hardwoods, except for the snipe. This was fixed in ten minutes with a long piece of shelving from HD clamped to in/out feed tables. In conjunction with some sacrificial pieces on either side of the material you care about. I use 2x4s. Cutting depth adjustment is very stable. Minor vibration when running, but clamping or bolting down really helps. Construction seems pretty solid. I have no complaints about some parts being made from plastic. Their choice of materials was strategic, this thing is pretty light for the quality results it produces. It's loud and makes a mess. You won't find a planet that doesn't though. I sometimes plane Purple Heart, and get great results when I take very shallow passes. It's been a few months of consistent use and the blades are still cutting well. I did lots of research, and I don't think you'll find a better planer for the price. Poor quality

I purchased this delta planer to replace my 15 year old delta planer that finally wore out after running thousands of board feet of lumber through it. I received it at the end of February, but was unable to use it until mid April, so I missed the return window. I generally don't write reviews, but this machine is such a fine piece of junk I feel obligated to get the word out. I have owned and operated many Delta power tools over the years and I always thought that they provided a quality product at a fair price. I am still in a state of disbelief that Delta has sunk to putting their name on such a low quality product. It arrived well packaged and appeared to be damage free. I set it up and leveled the infeed and outfeed tables. First board through was a 8 inch wide piece of pine 4 feet long. It sniped on both ends significantly. I feed the second board through while i watched the head. As soon as the board made contact with the first feed roller the head rocked back as it rose about 1/16th of an inch. When the board contacts the second roller the head rocks back the other direction. As the board exits the head rocks and drops back down. This was on a very light cut. While I was looking these boards over I still had the motor on. It had been running for less than two minutes and it started squealing like a bearing was going bad. I shut it off and let it sit while I looked at the guide posts. These are not smooth like they were on my old Delta. They have a very rough surface finish and a sloppy fit where they go through the head. No wonder the head rocks like it does. I plugged it back in and turned it on. The squealing had stopped so I fed another board through. As soon as that board had passed the squealing started again and now after a total of nine and a half minutes of run time it sounds like it is going to come apart. This will be the last time I waste my hard earned money on a Delta product. I expected to get ten years or more from this planer like i did my last one. Instead i got ten minutes. ... show more

i use to have a MasterCraft Planer that i had for years that i lost in a fire ...i've been checking out all the other brands in stores and online...read all the reviews and questions this seemed like the best bang for my buck...as i am a amature woodworker and DIY er...set was easy and knives were set perfect from factory and all screws were tight...i've only ran about 100' through it mostly 1" rough cut pine and oak at 1/16" worked great with very little snipe (held the boards flat going in and out) and i am happy with it for how often and what i use it for it's a great machine at less than half the price of other big name brands...the dust chute works good with my shop vac but fills up fast. would recommend for some one looking for an economical planer... ... show more

My Delta 22-555 13" planer worked great for about 6 years. I do not operate a wood shop. I have only occasionally used the planer. Rarely would be a better word. The planer for involved approximately 8-10 different projects. Naturally, as luck would have it, the warranty is for 5 years. Obviously I was shocked that the planer stopped working with so little use. I live in a rural area and so I drove a 2-hour round trip to the service center that Delta recommended. OK, fine. I hear back from the service center that Delta does not sell motor parts - only full motors - to their service centers. The entire repair estimate came to $80.00 OVER the price of a new Delta planer. The service center suggested that I contact Delta to complain about this situation, which I did. The Delta representative, who said he was the reviewer for warranty claims at Delta, provided absolutely no accommodation suggestion. I'm out of warranty and out of luck. Great. Thanks, Delta. I am not going to buy a new Delta planer or any other Delta tool. It's really sad since I am also the owner of an antique Delta tablesaw that I still use regularly. My grandfather could buy decent Delta tools 50 years ago, but times change. By the way, before the question arises, The planer was always powered by a wall receptacle and not an under-sized extension cord. 2 starts for value for the short term.
