This twin size memory foam topper fits right on the bed without any gap, and it definitely makes the surface feel softer compared to the original mattress. The thickness is as it said. My daughter uses it since her bed was on the firmer side, and she immediately said it felt like sleeping on a cloud. I also tried lying down and it does feel cushioned, with just enough give so it doesn’t sink too much. The surface is fluffy and I like that it doesn’t trap too much heat, which was a concern I had before using it. There was no odd smell when we opened the package. For everyday use, it does improve the comfort level, though I wouldn’t say it transforms the mattress completely. If someone prefers a very firm sleeping surface, this may feel a little too soft, and it works well in our case.
