Description

“Learn to love death's ink-black shadow as much as you love the light of dawn.” Yeah? Well, Nikolas doesn't do early mornings. It takes a certain kind of courage to live as if favoured by the Gods, ignoring the ever-present ghosts of your past--or perhaps not bravery, but arrogance. And maybe not even that. Ben genuinely believes that the past is behind them—that they deserve to enjoy the life they have created. So it's not hubris that leads him to overlook the signs that Nikolas does not share his faith, it's love. But Nikolas knows something is coming. He can't stop it; he can only decide how he will choose to face it. And without Ben's support, he is entirely alone. Read more

  • second reading
I have been looking for a theme or sub-plot to be spelled out unambiguously. I feel that in this book in the most satisfying way we have one. It is etched in steel, set in stone, and engraved on hearts. The constants in all of the books thus far have been spiritual isolation, self-loathing, idolization of another, and sacrifice. The characters have not exhibited these traits equally. There is much more to experience in the following books but this seems to me to be the initial clarification. I love the way this author writes. Perfect! ... show more

  • the realizations keep coming for Nik
Nik, Nik, Nik...once again manipulative, vain, and egotistical, but redeemed by the strength of his irrevocable love for his soulmate, Ben. In Death's Ink-Black Shadow, Nik once again comes to a realization, but this time he doesn't come to it until the end when Ben does something for him that he never expected. But honestly? I can't believe these two, who have been in a relationship for years, know each other so little. Nik SHOULD have known Ben was quite capable of this, after all, the man is ex SAS, and those guys are not special forces for nothing, so Nik really should not have had his world rocked quite so thoroughly by what Ben was capable of, because Ben had the training, AND he loved Nik just as much as Nik loved Ben. Sigh... I liked this installment more than the previous one, it feels more like them, moves a bit faster, and I loved the revelation at the end. Their relationship is of course, still hot, and the realizations keep coming for Nik. I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy. ... show more

  • Maybe a strong 3.5??
First I just need to say I really, really like this series and the characters, especially the MCs, Ben and Nicholas. I really enjoyed the humorous episodes, especially when these two men were trying to care for a baby, Loved It! But this book did have it's dark (very dark) moments but there's been a bit of that in every book so far (so not really an issue for me). The story revolve around two dangerous men and these books never let you forget about that. So, why only 3.5 stars? I just couldn't understand the angst with Ben Rider; for the first 75/85% of the book his attitude/behavior really irritated me and I found myself continuously putting the book down to do something else. He didn't act like an ex-military man whose was groom to be a killing machine. But Mr. Wilshire was able to save this story with the last 25% of this book. And, IMO, it was a very redeeming moment for Ben. I do regret not starting this series earlier but it is well worth my time now and the best thing about that is I don't have to wait months for the next book release. I just get to binge on these book at my leisure! ... show more

  • Fantastic
Death's Ink-Black Shadow by John Wiltshire is the sixth book in the More Heat Than The Sun series. Humor, emotion, tension, suspense, and romance. I love the level of intimacy between Nik and Ben - beautiful. Great secondary characters and a fantastic storyline. Loved it.

  • More relationship, psychological thriller
Death’s Ink-Black Shadow is the sixth book in Wiltshire’s More Heat Than the Sun series. These books follow the same couple and each book builds off some events from previous ones. In some ways these stand on their own, but this one is an almost immediate continuation of events from The Bruise-Black Sky. I’d definitely recommend listening to them all and in order – starting with Love is a Stranger. This review contains spoilers to earlier books. This book leans almost more toward a psychological thriller than past books. Focusing mainly on Ben & Nik’s relationship and their adapting to being parents. (I *told* you there was a spoiler from the last book!) Secrets that Nik’s ex-wife kept are revealed and in turn threaten his found/created family. I love that Wilshire continues to incorporate characters from past books and that, despite his grumbling, it’s obvious Nik has found a way to love more people than just Ben. Tim, Squeezy, Miles, Emmy and more are a gathering of misfits that don’t fit anywhere yet somehow work well incorporated into this unusual brood. Trust and security continue to be elusive and Nik & Ben both struggle with the best way to care and protect themselves and those around them. This book seemed to cap off several mysteries and it feels like there’s going to be a bit of a pivot in Enduring Night (book 7). I can’t wait! Narration: Gary Furlong continues to be magnificent. Despite all the ebooks already being released, there is absolutely NO WAY that I would read these to myself. Because these audios are perfection. While I borrowed the ebook through Kindle Unlimited, I received a free copy of this audiobook from Decent Fellows Press and am voluntarily leaving an honest review. ... show more

  • keeps getting better
Sometimes a book series starts to lose its readers interest after so many books. Not this one! This one just keeps getting better. Can’t wait to start the next book to find out what else Ben and Nikolas will go through.
