  • Good if they don't leak, which they probably will. Good product/weak packaging.
Size: Case of 3
First off Datrex bars are very calorie dense and are tasty for a food of this class. This is survival food and not health food so it is low in vitamin and minerals but packs a punch in fat and sugar calories to keep you warn, energized, and thinking clearly so you can keep going. Hold one of these 3600 calorie wonders in your had and be amazed that this is three days of survival rations. For educational value gather 3600 calories in other survival foods and be amazed at the compactness of this block of life. These contain wheat so if you have wheat allergies these are not the correct choice for you. Now the bad The product could not have been newer as it was shipped the same month as it was manufactured. Unfortunately all three packages were leakers and had lost vacuum in shipping. The Mylar foil packaging is very stiff and unfortunately thinner than it used to be so each package leaked from the corners where they contacted each other they punctured each other or impacted inside of the box because they were packed loosely. Each package must be individually wrapped in bubble wrap or foam mat or other material to protect the corners and stop shifting because the hard vacuum makes the package vulnerable to impact and the film shatters like glass. I work for a packaging equipment manufacturer for over 20 years now and we specialize in modified atmosphere packaging which is how these are packaged. These packages are vacuumed, nitrogen purged, and then vacuumed again to protect against oxidation, peroxide formation, and rancidity of the fats. If I remember correctly these bars in the past may have been packed in nylon/EVOH which is a physically strong package, but does not have as good of an oxygen/moisture barrier as this much more expensive foil film. So Datrex is not being cheap on their packaging on one hand, but they are being cheap by using a thinner material than is necessary to survive in a get home bag, vehicle or boat. If you have a Food Saver type packaging system it would be a good idea to place these in a second skin if you are not placing these on a shelf. Once the package is punctured it will loose it's nitrogen barrier and it will oxidize in a few months. ... show more

  • Use to be good.. newer ones ordered were not vacuum sealed
Size: Case of 3
2 of the 3 were not vacuum sealed. I Thought possibly it may of happened during shipping so I tried eating one of the unvacum sealed ones and it was terrible. I have ordered these in the past and kept one for nearly 5 years (which is close to the recommended storage time) and they were still completely vacuum sealed and delicious. I like the way they taste. My girlfriend and I are the entire box in a couple days as snacks.. The newer ones I ordered that were not vacuum sealed also were in all white packaging, the ones I had from some years back were in all blue packaging.. I don't know if that makes a difference in the way they taste or the company that packages them but I Thought I would just make that known. ... show more

  • Would have been good value but...
Size: Case of 3
Would have been good value but 2 of the 3 packages came not vacuum sealed (open) and thus the product inside would not have lasted long - maybe that is why you get a decent price on them. The two packages on the right were not vacuum sealed. I gave 2 stars because the shipping was free and the price was good (even though it didn't work out). ... show more

  • Solid Pick for Emergency Rations
Size: Case of 3
I keep one or two of these in our cars, at our cabin and at home. They were approaching an expiration date so I decided to replace them and, being a penny pincher, decided to eat the expiring ones. I was pleasantly surprised with the taste and texture. They have a crumbly cookie texture that brought to mind a denser pecan sandy. The taste was mild but nice - so nice that I've been having one for a snack every now and then. These are a step above other emergency bars I've tried as far as taste goes. It wouldn't be torture to eat these for a few days if you had to. I'm giving it 4 stars (instead of 5) because there's always some room for improvement. In this case the improvement might be to add some vitamins and minerals, as they don't have much nutritional value other than calories (not my biggest worry in an emergency though). ... show more

  • Surprisingly tasty even after 5 years!
Size: Case of 3
I bought a pack 5 years ago for emergency use and (thankfully) there were no emergencies. The pack had expired so I bought a new pack to replace it. I didn’t want to waste the expired pack so I ate a few of the ration bars and was amazed - even after 5 years they taste pretty good! Kind of a crumbly cookie-like texture and taste. If I had to survive on these for a few days I think I’d be just fine. ... show more

  • Long shelf life if the packaging isn't compromised (mine were)
Size: Case of 3
Two of the three bricks sent arrived loose and not vacuum sealed, there is air inside which will probably compromise its freshness and life. Had to go through the extra effort of vacuum sealing around the pack with hopes that it will make it keep as long as it should have. These bars are good to keep around iand last for years if the bags aren't opened. Once they're opened, they should start to deteriorate quickly. ... show more

  • It's for sustenance only
Size: Case of 3
The packaging vacuum seal doesn't last. I reached out to the manufacturer to inquire about the shelf life if resealed and for other information about the ingredients as well as how it can be used in a non-marine setting and never got an answer either to emails or phone messages. The manufacturer of this product is completely non-responsive. I wouldn't recommend this product since the seal doesn't last and there is very little info as to the quality of the ingredients used in processing these bars. ... show more

  • Barely 3 stars because they would probably keep you alive
Size: Case of 3
I have no clue what the positive reviewers are comparing these to when they say they are "great tasting". Perhaps compared to cardboard or drywall but, these are fair from tasty. I can see how people would say they taste a bit like shortbread cookies. Super dry crumbly nasty shortbread cookies. I could see me eating them to live though so won't give below 3 stars. ... show more
