I paint large 3x4’ watercolors and wanted to try painting on something other than white paper. I primed a wood panel with clear gesso and then this transparent watercolor ground- I recommend letting it cure for the full 48hrs as it absorbed the watercolor paint better than at the 24hr mark. Also play around with how you apply it- using a brush left behind the stroke lines and the roller gave it more toothy texture. It doesn’t have quite the same porosity as paper and feels a bit more like plastic (it is acrylic based), but it’s the best clear watercolor ground I’ve found so far.

I apply this ground using stemmed sponges (for stenciling) on coloring book pages (they don’t take watercolor well), cardstock, notebook pages (two pages at a time because of drying time), and sketchbooks for pencils (two pages at a time). I even mixed s bit of silver iridescent mica powder with this ground to give the surface of the page a sheen (worked). The thin papers I tape on a board before applying this ground to minimize buckling.

I love this! It's completely changed the way I think about materials for watercolor. Wood? Canvas? Old magnets? All can now be used for watercolor! Slather it on with a flat brush, let it dry and sand it lightly to even it out and your previously unpaintable surface can now be decorated! The colors can bleed around the edges in more detailed pieces so you do need caution and to practice with it before jumping into something huge. And whatever brush texture you have on the wet ground will stay when it's dry. I'm really happy I gave this a try, I enjoy this product immensely

For watercolor mistakes! Follow directions, wait, sand lightly... ta-da... begin again. I have also found it is awesome for adding white highlights where I should have left the paper white. More minor miracles.

I am a beginner watercolorist. I use Arches paper which is not cheap so with this product it gives me the freedom to experiment, knowing I can "fix" errors. After it is completely dry I lightly sand out brush marks before repainting. Very easy to do. Love this product.

Fast and easy way to make cheap coloring book paper accept traditional watercolor or Inktense with a wet brush. I wanted to use my play time to improve my beginner watercolor skills, instead of relying on colored pencils or markers. But even the books designed for watercolors were pilling and blotching under my heavy handed treatment. The DS transparent ground gives enough protection and a slightly toothy surface, plus allows more lifting, which has vastly improved my results. Very pleased! NB! I cheat on the application to make life easier (it’s play time, after all). Spritz about a teaspoon of water into a recycled mayo jar lid, soak a 1 1/2” flat taklon brush and use it to scoop a good dollop (3-4 tablespoons) of the ground into the lid. Using the brush, stir until the water is absorbed, scrape off the brush into the lid, and paint one thin layer onto as many pages as possible until you run out of ground. Spread them out to dry, wash the brush and lid, and have a cup of coffee. By the time the coffee is gone, something will be dry enough to paint on. Put the other pages away to cure for later, but I haven’t had any problems just diving in, as soon as everything’s dry to the touch. Obviously, this is not recommended to real art, but it works fine for casual play.

It was fun to experiment with the transparent ground. I had cold-pressed ground but got this one to see the difference. I can watercolor on wood with special prep and have the wood grain show through. Instructions are clear and it's easy to use. Glass is next!

Works like a charm on my precoated canvass panel board. The surface now feels like watercolor paper. Just make sure to let it dry for at least 3 days for optimum performance. I tried painting on the surface 1 hour after coating with the ground and I noticed some chalky particles in my brush. Although it worked yet i didnt like the "powdered chalk" thing on the surface. So, let the surface dry out completely.
