A Broadway chorine (Joan Crawford) needs a little help with her hoofing, so her dance director (Clark Gable) gets an idea. A good idea. "Do you feel like going through that opening number with Mr. Astaire?" And Fred Astaire, making his screen debut, shows the lady how it's done. Three film icons give the backstage musical a jolt of superstar electricity in a song-, dance- and romance-filled extravaganza featuring support by Nelson Eddy, Robert Benchley, and The Three Stooges, and tunes by Rodgers and Hart, Burton Lane, Dorothy Fields and more musical greats. Gable and Crawford had such stellar chemistry that M-G-M teamed them for eight movies. Here, as always, they have street- smart glamour and charisma to burn. Add Astaire's sophistication and Dancing Lady can take a well-deserved bow.

First let me start with I am a die hard Three Stooges fan so I did only go into this to see their early work. They were not in it enough for me lol but I thought I would still enjoy this movie. I was wrong. First there is nothing really to this movie aside from the love triangle (if you can even call it that). The main character has no struggle except for a brief stalking scene and to have to chose between the hot director who gives her the leading role or the rich guy who is buying her everything. Fred Astair was not utilized enough and the dance routines were a joke considering she was the only one good enough to be able to do them. All in all I felt this movie was pretty much a let down. ... show more

Joan Crawford and Clark Gable sparkle in this old showbiz story. Joan is fresh, beautiful, and stunning in this picture. This was long before her lips and eyebrows grew so large. It also pushed her into the arms of Franchot Tone whom she would marry and become "Joan Tone".

Extras with this MGM/Warner DVD include two historically interesting musical shorts: PLANE NUTS (1933) with Ted Healy & his Stooges, and ROAST BEEF AND MOVIES (1934) with Jerome 'Curly' Howard. DANCING LADY is an early MGM musical about a burlesque hoofer trying to get her break on the Great White Way (Crawford), and the two men who love her: a rich, manipulative socialite (Tone) and the show's cash-strapped producer (Gable). No guesswork here: in the end, the right guy gets the girl! Fred Astaire's top hat and tails unbilled screen debut opposite Miss Crawford is a showstopper called "Heigh Ho/Let's Go Bavarian." Robert Benchley contributed some dialogue (mostly his own) but also received no official credit. Parenthetical number preceding title is a 1 to 10 imdb viewer poll rating. This is one of my favorite movies from the classic hollywood era. I've seen it many times but I never get tired. Joan Crawford and Clark Gable are simply Magnifique! A must see for any Fan of Old Tinsel Town!

Chemistry between Joan Crawford and Clark Gable was perfect. Surprised Joan could dance and keep up with Fred Astaire in his 1st movie. Surprise casting of the 3 Stooges as stage hands.

Crawford is energetic and enthusiastic in this role. It comes with bonus features, mainly shorts by the three stooges, who make an early appearance in this picture. However, the most amazing dancer by far was Fred Astaire. Subtitled. "Pre-code" which means it was one of the more scandalous movies of its time.
