  • Glitches ruin an otherwise promising musical tool.
Style: Korg ELECTRIBES Sample Based Production ...
I got the Electribe Sampler to perform live. I've mostly been a computer DAW-based producer but recently the idea of going completely computer-free has been really appealing. I was excited about the Korg Electribe because of its integrated effects and the ability to run off of batteries. I ordered mine on Amazon and, when it arrived, started playing around with it. When playing sequences I found the pads to be inconsistent. Some pads were more sensitive than others. I also found that every now and then my rhythms would flam awkwardly out of time with my presses. It didn't happen a lot but it was enough to really sabotage my confidence in the device. It's true what people say - changing patterns would kill the effects hard. That was also jarring. But the real kicker that made me return the unit was how certain effects would inexplicably throw off the timing of a sequence. When I would activate the distressor on the master channel my snare suddenly was thrown off tempo. It wasn't just latency, either... the lights on the pad were off tempo, too. Even switching off that effect wouldn't fix it. I actually had to hit "stop" and "play" again and boom, the sample would be in time again. I wanted to import about 500 samples but I was horrified to discover that this would require importing each one at a time. Ugh. I guess I'm spoiled but this was so daunting for me. I tried upgrading to the latest firmware: 1.15, I think. This actually fixed the pad sensitivity. It's a lot better. But the effect timing glitches remained. At the end of the day I felt like I couldn't trust it either live or with my compositions. Sad, really. I considered getting an Octatrack but it's just too much sampler for me and the lack of polyphony turned me off. I ended up getting a Push 2 for use with Ableton. Yeah it's twice the price and requires a computer but it seems like the most holistically powerful option for the money. Firmware updates may iron this product out but they've had some time to do so and it was surprisingly bad for me. Pluses: Some of the samples were nice. The lights were fun. The kaos pad was fun for breakdowns. Some of the effects were pleasant. ... show more

  • Best gift ever for a musically inclined youngster and a quite capable production tool
An awesome capable synth built into a sample based step sequenced drum machine. I used it as a production tool in combination with Ableton Live. I think this would be the gift of a lifetime for a musically inclined child. Teaching synthesis and musical scales is one of the many things a child could learn. I recommend Syntorial. A software teaching hands on how to control the varies synthesizer parameters to learn to create amazing sounds. http://www.syntorial.com/ Here is a link to hear a minor example of it's capability. I did not include any drum sequences, Just Synth https://soundcloud.com/nlpascal/electribe-2-synth-demo/s-7MNGD ... show more

  • Can't tell much of anything from the manual, it's really bad
Style: Korg ELECTRIBES Sample Based Production ...
The ESX-1 had the ability to do other than 4/4 timing, you could set the "last step" so that you could do 7/8, 5/8 or 3/4 time. I checked the manual and there's nothing in the manual for setting part or pattern length other than pattern length in 1-4 which is the number of BARS, not the number of steps. User reviews and spec sheets indicate each part can be set with a different "last step", but the manual seems to have left out that detail. Does it support last step per part as is rumored? If so, the manual sucks. If not, the product sucks. Which is it? Anyone's guess at this point, if you don't already have one and can mess around with it to see if you can find the "last step" option for a part... ... show more

  • KORG Electribe Sampler
Style: Korg ELECTRIBES Sample Based Production ...
wow, almost speechless, this thing is so much FUN I just received mine today and havent really "gotten into it" yet (YET). BUT this thing is so much more than I anticipated I had to write a review. (I will update this review in a few months also). Right out of the box just going through the factory presets/samples/sounds/etc this thing is so awesome sounding. Ive been listening to "rap" / "hip hop" / and the like since the 80's, pretty picky but Ive always enjoyed a little from alot of different styles. So point being right out of the box without any tweaking I can see (HEAR) myself using this thing for hours and hours. For the most part every sample/preset/factory loaded patch (again most) sound amazing, right out of every rap genre, house, and all other "sub genres" of electronic music Ive ever heard. When I go through the presets with my headphones on I get caught jamming away on almost all of the first 30 factory loaded patches (all Ive gone through so far). This thing is scarey. Highly addictive, (to me) sounding almost exactly (if not exactly literally) like every style of electronic music (very broad usage of that term here) Ive ever listened to. Ive always been into composition and have wanted to delve into these styles as well. It is amazing how authentic and dialed in each sound is. They are straight off of albums Ive grown up listening to - no tweaking, eq'ing etc needed. scarey cool, very fun and (and to the inner geek inside of me) very exciting. seriously, everyone involved in music should own one of these. If youve ever wanted to get into any form of electronic based music buy this and it will blow your mind. And you can also import samples and tweak them as well. Its BASIC (very basic) operation / how it fundamentally works: ...Im just scratching the surface 16 pads + 4 measures each of the 16 pads can be assigned a sound (preset etc) and THEN you can use the entire 16 pads for that one particular pad to write music with. 16 pads with 16 different presets, then each pad has its own 16 pads to be used for writing music with. + you can upload samples and use those as well (hence the Electribe SAMPLER). Good stuff from KORG. ... show more
