  • Definitely NOT for beginners!!
As a crochet stitch DICTIONARY, I expected detailed instructions along with Step-by-Step Photos (as indicated on the cover of the book). NOT true at all! The instructions are convoluted and the photos aren't much help. NOT easy to follow. I feel the author attempted to cram 200 crochet stitches in this book without taking the time to DEFINE and provide step-by-step instructions for each one. TERRIBLE book and an even WORSE "dictionary"!!! ... show more

  • Confusing organization
I haven't crochet'd in a long time, so this was a good refresher for things like finishing, and changing colors, joining, etc. I almost asked for a refund (I got the Kindle version), before figuring out what is going on here. There are TWO sections for "Basic Stitches". The first section is in the "Getting Started" chapter, and it does have explicit details of how to do each stitch. The line drawings on the Kindle, unfortunately, can't be enlarged, but they are clear enough that with the text, you get the point. The 2nd section for "Basic Stitches" is in the "Directory of Stitches", and it does NOT have explicit instructions for each stitch. For instance, I looked up "Half Double Crochet", and, in the instructions, I am told in Step 1 to do "1 hdc in 3rd ch from hook". How can I DO the hdc if it doesn't explain it? I think this is a problem of bad editing. This Directory of Stitches goes on to describe complex structures (like scallop) which are built using the basic stitches. It evidently doesn't know what to do with the basic stitches themselves since they are described in detail elsewhere. It's finding them "elsewhere", when it seems logical they would be in the Directory of Stitches, that is irritating. Since I found the directions for the stitches I want, I am not going to request a refund, but I will give it only 3 stars, and suggest that this confusion be addressed in future editions. ... show more

  • Quite confusting
I found this book very confusing with many instructions. There are abbreviations I've never seen before and can't find, in the book, what the abbreviations are. Also the instructions are weird, it lists them as Steps, for instance: Step 1 (row 1) Skip first ch, sl st in next ch. then it goes to Step 2 (row 1 cont.) What??? Now, I've been crocheting for a few decades and have never seen anything like this. I would have liked to have tried many stitches but couldn't figure out the abbreviations. Sorry I bought this. ... show more

  • Great for Beginners!
I am very happy with my purchase. I've only been crocheting for a little over two weeks and learned from YouTube. I've made two blankets...first one wasn't so good but the second came out beautifully...something to be proud of. While there are tons of tutorials on YT, it's so hard to decide which stitches to to look for, etc. especially if you're new to this. So I purchased this book for that reason. This is a wonderful, wonderful crocheting tool. The instructions are very clear to understand, very clear pictures of the patterns and instructions. I'm extremely happy with this book. What I like the most (other than the layout, clear instructions and pictures) is how it tells you the multiples needed for each kind of stitch. When learning from YT some people don't mention the multiples needed for the particular stitch for example but this book provides the needed multiples for every single stitch that it has within the book. If you're a beginner, I definitely would recommend this book. I can even imagine this being helpful for long-time crocheters who would like to learn new stitches. The stitches are so beautiful too. I really believe this is worth every penny. Plus, other sellers (like craft stores) are selling this book at a higher price-point. I like this book so much that I'm going to wrap the cover to keep the book in great condition. Happy crocheting! :) ... show more

  • The Absolute Best Reference Book
Each stitch offered gives you a one-line instruction on how to set up your foundation and the actual stitch is explained in detail with step by step diagrams. This is perfect for existing crocheters who would like to increase knowledge of new stitches. OMG this book is GREAT! It is in complete color and the photos of stitches are in differing and vibrants colors and fibers. This photo is stitch 113 called caterpillar stripe. Sooo cool ... show more

  • Not worth it if you can't understand the patterns
Really hard to understand. I have been crocheting for years now and have never had a problem reading a pattern, but this book is extremely hard. I tried a couple stitches but couldn't get it right. Very disappointed.

  • Very helpful
I think this book is amazing. So many stitches. If you want to do something different this book will help. I look thru the patterns and can pick one to make a new looking afghan or anything. I like how it has everything! A color picture of the pattern, written directions and the symbol pattern. Just an awesome book to have. ... show more

  • Clear, concise, and presented in a building block approach.
Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you, another testament to the fact that cream floats, and the best always rises to the surface. After wading through so many poorly written books, it was a delight to find this book, well worth every dime spent. Beautifully photographed, Professionally charted, and presented with tips on how NOT to make mistakes. This is both a reference work and an idea book. Well done! ... show more
