Ok set for basic, occaisional homeowner use.
These are decent tools for basic homeowner use. Craftsman is no longer the brand it was, as we all know, so the quality of their products is hit or miss. They know that, too, which is why they have a very good 3 year warranty. I've had a Craftsman tool I got from Lowe's that die within the warranty period and they did replace it with no questions asked other than proving I had the tool in hand and the manufacture date was within the warranty period. So, you can be fairly certain if/when these die within a couple of years, you will get another with no cost to you. This drill/driver set is lightweight and aimed at the same consumer who is looking at Ryobi, Black & Decker and Skil drill/driver sets. The tools are performing their tasks well in my testing right now with no obvious signs of problems. The drill chuck operates easily and grabs well - the bits don't slip after a few uses in reverse, etc. The driver does a good job of sinking deck screws into 4x4 posts without feeling like it's being overwhelmed. If you're more of a pro-sumer, I wouldn't bother with these. Dewalt, Milwaukee, Makita, and Bosch all offer "pro" grade tools that will perform better than these and will withstand years of hard, heavy use. These feel much cheaper and are not going to stand the test of time if they are used regularly for anything more than simple around-the-house tasks. That aside, if you are looking for your first set of drill and impact driver, or are looking to gift a set to a new homeowner, these are not a bad option at all, and the warranty gives good piece of mind. I will mention the value of this set is slightly lacking when compared to other options due to this set only including 1 battery, where most others have 2. Nothing is more annoying than only having 1 battery when you're in the middle of a project and you have to stop and wait an hour + for it to recharge. The charger included in this kit is goofy, too. It clicks onto the top of the battery rather than being a stationary base into which you slide the battery. Again, for occasional light-duty use, this isn't too big of a deal and is easier to store in a hall closet (or in the included tool storage bag). But, if you have any workshop/workspace/workbench in your home, you'll want a normal charger that can stay plugged in all the time in a stationary spot into which you simply place a battery. Other new Craftsman tools do come with that type of charger, but this one does not. So, I would say I recommend this if you just need to have a drill/driver set around the house to occasionally drill a hole, tighten a screw or do some minor work. If you have any plans to do larger projects and/or put more than once-in-a-while use into your tools, I don't recommend this set. It's good for what it is - other sets are simply more than this one.
