  • Craftsman Continues
A NICE QUALITY wrench set in dark-tint chrome with true fully polished finish. These have the 6-point box ends on them. Many see this as an advantage, providing extra strength over the more difficult to manufacture 12-point closed end type. I'm kind of old school though, and know from yesteryear 12-point ones can be made out of high quality alloy metals, which can stand up to many, many, years of heavy professional use, and even withstand hammering on, or using cheater bars on them practically without end! 12-point are more effective for easily getting a "quick bite" onto bolts. Repeatedly. So while these 6-point's are perhaps stronger, and unnecessarily so, if of high quality alloys, they will take a tiny bit of extra effort in wrench placement throughout their entire service life. However, these "Overdrive" 6-point's allow for Craftsman's new "tight torque technology" with "tiny raised ridges" on the inside 6-point faces. No room for those, within the 12-point version. And I have seen impressive demonstrations of these apparently being able to remove "rounded off" bolts which other wrenches, simply cannot. So in the end, it all depends on your particular experience and values. These are also extra length, "long panel wrenches", which is kind of nice and increases your effective leverage when in use. Again, relative values come into play, as they also may not always fit into cramped spaces, where a normal length wrench would. I can say, again in yesteryear, Craftsman 12-points always came through without exception. These also carry Craftsman's "Full Lifetime Warranty" should they ever fail you in any way. And will then, be eligible for free replacement, no questions asked. Something which "once upon a time" made Craftsman second only to "Professional Level" Snap-On brand wrenches. But regardless, that Full Lifetime Warranty is still a very nice selling point. And one I have used repeatedly throughout decades past. All in all, these are a very nice 11 piece wrench set. The dedicated, "high-strength plastic carrier" they come in is also very nice, sturdy, reliable, and compact for convenient storage. However, for myself, these are only going to be backups to my 12-points version which I carry always within my personal vehicle. These, will remain in my home. Some think Craftsman isn't the same in "quality" anymore. And this may carry some water, truly. But nonetheless, they remain my personal, first choice, of hand wrenches in general. Your mileage, may vary! However, Craftsman 12-point box ends, remain my "go to" wrenches of choice. "Overdrive" or not. ... show more

  • CRAFTSMAN: CRAFTSMAN Overdrive 11-Piece SAE Combination Wrench Set, Chromium Vanadium Alloy Steel
This review is of the CRAFTSMAN Overdrive 11-piece set of open-end/box-end combination wrenches. This set is provided with a plastic organizational hanger to organize, secure, and to potentially hang these wrenches from a tool board on the wall, if so desired. These tools are forged from Chromium Vanadium alloy steel (CR-V) with a smooth, mirror- polished finish. The Chromium Vanadium alloy steel is employed for its hardness, tensile strength, toughness, fine-grain structure of the steel, and finally, wear resistance. After the forging process, the steel forgings are finish-machined, heat treated, finish ground, and polished. Finally, the tools are provided with a smooth, mirror- polished gunmetal-chrome finish for appearance and to resist the possibility of corrosion. Each tool is stamped on each side and on each end with the size of the tool. It is also stamped with “CRAFTSMAN” (the manufacturer of the tools) on one side of each wrench. The wrenches in this set are supplied in 1/4", 5/16”, 3/8”, 7/16”, 1/2”, 9/16”, 5/8”. 11/16”, 3/4”, 13/16, and 7/8” sizes. Each tool has an open-end wrench on one end and a box-end on the other end. The open end is offset 15° from the center-line of the wrench handle to provide the ability to rotate fasteners in limited access conditions. The box-end wrench is offset 15° from the center-line of the fastener (bolt) axis to provide space to grasp the wrench when working against a flat surface. Both the open end and the box end of the wrenches incorporate what the manufacturer calls “Tight Torque Technology” into the tool’s design. This design feature enhances how the wrench interfaces with the sides of the fastener to avoid stressing and rounding-off the corners of hex-shaped fasteners. By preferentially engaging the flats of the hex-shaped fasteners and avoiding stress on the corners, even previously rounded fasteners may be removed without further damage. Additionally, the wrenches have longer shafts (the Overdrive feature) so that more torque may be applied to the fasteners and the user does not have to strain quite so much to remove recalcitrant fasteners. These tools are very well made and are made from high-quality materials. The smooth, mirror- polished gunmetal-chrome finish on the tools is excellent and very easy to grip and to hold onto. I really like this tool set. Everything is very well done. Additionally, these tools are made in Taiwan which is known for superior steel production and superior tool design and manufacturing processes and capabilities. Congratulations, I am truly impressed with this product and that that is not an easy thing to accomplish. ... show more

  • Very nice set of wrenches
This is really a complete set for most common size bolts and nuts. They are very comfortable in your hands. They are a little bit longer than other wrenches of the same size and this is a real advantage when you need extra length for leverage or just to reach a nut or bolt that is down in a narrow area (see photo). I prefer the six point box end (like these) vs. 12 point because the grip on the nut/bolt is much better. The box end really holds well and shouldn’t strip out a nut or bolt of any kind of softness or hardness. The open end of the wrench is unique with several serrations of bumps, which allow it to grip nuts/bolts with rounded heads. The carrying case is in my opinion very clever. When open, it sits flat and all the wrenches are in order of size. When closed, it’s much more compact and fits into my wrench drawer perfectly. The only reason I’m giving this a four star rating is the finish. There are brown smoky-like patches on nearly every wrench. While the finish seems durable, the overall look is very poor. The two best things on the wrench are the additional length and the excellent grip on both the box end and open end of the wrench. Craftsman does have a lifetime warranty, which is an awesome thing. These wrenches are a good price point for me and I would likely buy them again. ... show more
