I'm designing a guest bedroom at our lake cabin to have a botanical theme. I wanted to make a simple lantern using pressed leaves from some of my plants, and was going to make it from scratch. Then I spotted this kit, and decided to give it a try. I really like that everything you need - except for plants - is included! The plastic sheets included with this kit make up the form that you build the lantern around. These sheets are fairly thick and they do work well. I like that you can save these sheets to make a second lantern at another time. There is plenty of tissue paper included with this kit to make one lantern. The glue (similar to Mod Podge) included works well, as does the included foam brush. The base of the lantern is a piece of cardboard. This cardboard does work well, but I opted to make a wood base instead. I used the cardboard as a template for the wood base. The kit also comes with natural twine you can use to wrap around the base of the vase. It's helpful to hide the cardboard base, if you use that base. I preferred the look without the twine, so I left it off the lantern I made. The LED tea light works well, and is bright enough for the lantern. You could also use any other type of LED tea light or candle with this lantern. The instructions are well-written and easy to understand. I think most children would be able to follow these instructions on their own. I think this kit would be fun for kids to do - with or without their parents. But it's also fun for adults. I do a lot of crafts and projects, so have a lot of craft supplies on hand. After using this kit, I know I could have accomplished pretty much the same results using my own supplies, so the $20 for this kit seems expensive. But... for someone who doesn't have their own craft supplies, or hasn't really worked on craft projects much, having everything together in one kit - including instructions - is worth the $20. After all, to me, it isn't about just having a lantern, it's the experience of creating something yourself that is important. I do recommend this kit. ... show more

    • Cute, multi day activity, directions need a few read throughs.
This ended up pretty cute. I had to read the directions over a few times to get how to do it. Do read the directions before you start on it so you understand them before you start. It does take multiple days to construct because you need to wait for the glue to dry between layers. It is fairly flimsy though. The whole thing is pretty much biodegradable... The bottom is a piece of thick cardboard. It's super light when done. I ended up using these wildflower stickers I have since I couldn't get any real wildflowers where I live. And it turned out fairly good. I also used some of their printed cut outs. I was worried that I wasn't going to have enough of the tissue paper so I ended up making the base layer out of some art paper I had on hand. It was a little thicker which I hoped would add some heft to the project. I ended up having extra tissue paper so it really wasn't a problem in hindsight. The glue (Modge Podge type decoupage glue) is really thick. I had to thin it with water to get it to flow onto the tissue. A bigger bottle of the glue would have been helpful as well. It was enough to finish the project but I was thinning it which made it go farther. Getting the plastic form out in step 2 (I think) was very difficult. I ended up putting a hole into my lantern but since there were more layers to come, it was easily patched. After getting it out from the base layer it was much easier to take it out in a later step. The jute string adds a nice touch to the bottom and makes it look more substantial. The LED tea light works well. It looks cute. But expect to spend multiple days on it. Not a lot of time each session but it needs to dry thoroughly between layers. I think I ended up doing it over 4 days. And think about having a place to dry it. I was able to hang it on a lamp that had a bar on it. Very light weight, probably won't last particularly long. It is fragile in that it can dent and a strong breeze will blow it onto the floor. Giftable craft set. Fun way to add flower and leaves to a nature themed latern. Fun to put together and glue onto the tissue paper. It looked pretty when the light was turned on.

But plan ahead - the leaves/flowers you choose must be dried and pressed in advance, which take some time. Fun, easy enough for my 13 year old.

    • Lots of time. Not long lasting.
If you have a lot of patience, enjoy attention to detail, have several hours plus multiple days to devote to a craft project that ultimately is neither sturdy, nor long-lasting, then this just may be what you're looking for. It's not something a child can do on their own, they'll need lots of help, depending on age & interest in the project. I would not recommend it as a gift considering the amount of work/time involved. ... show more

    • This is so complicated that I don't know that I will put it together.
This is a very complicated process. I looked at the directions a few times and just decided not to do it. You also have to collect plants. I think the product itself seems high quality so if you have the energy and like a time consuming multi-step project, this is for you.
