  • Solid choice in a crowded segment
Size: 32W x 10L Color: Sedona Desert Sand
Look around Amazon for tactical type shorts and there are 100s of choices. I have purchased some of the highly reviewed cheap pairs. I have 511 shorts. These are the perfect balance for me. In other words a solid value and high performance. The fabric is thick and reinforced. Pockets are well thought out. I CCW and these have a great fit when AIWB carrying. ... show more

  • Super comfy
Size: 40W x 10L Color: Shenandoah Shorts Navy
I really dig these. I'm a firefighter and was wanting work shorts with better dexterity. They fit to size, are fairly stretchy and extra light. These have been the most comfortable tactical shorts I've bought. I won't be going back with Proper products anymore after trying these. My only gripe is that the fastener is a metal button, it feels like it will tear away from the fabric at some point, and the button hole is too short making it hard to get the fastener through. This will most likely stretch a bit with time, it's not a big deal to me, but I can see someone getting frustrated with it. ... show more

  • Pay Attention! There are Four (4) Different Versions
As the headline says, there are four different versions of these shorts, all in a variety of colors, all true to size, and all of good quality. I have purchased at least one of each variety and I would have given them five stars as a set, except for a “meh”-quality to one of the versions. But first, a breakdown of each type in layman’s terms! • The Sedona version is what could best be called a “tactical” short. It is loaded with useful pockets and does not have an expandable waist band, so it can be used for IWB concealed carry as long as your belt isn’t wider than 1.5 inches. The pockets provide opportunity for every day carry (EDC) items such as a knife, tactical pen, small flashlight, and a spare magazine, as well as space for items like keys and a wallet. A handy zipper pocket keeps items secure and out of sight, but the zipper tab is a little difficult to access, so I augmented it with an aftermarket zipper pull from Paracord Planet that worked nicely and did not detract from the otherwise clean and stylish look of the short. The only oddity about these shorts is that some of the EDC pockets are located at the side of the legs toward the back. This arrangement took some getting used to, but I found it works fine and keeps my items secure and in easy reach without having them poke into my hamstrings. • The Shenandoah version has an expandable waist band and comes with its own removable, lightweight, nylon “belt.” It is also made of a rip-stop fabric. I wanted to like the belt, but found it to be annoying after the tail end kept sliding out from the belt loop and hanging down in front of my fly and between my legs—giving me the appearance of being a total slob or a slightly deranged or unhoused person. But the shorts work fine with your own belt, and the sturdy, wide belt loops are good for holding anything up to 1.5” in width. A plastic ring stitched onto the waist band gives you a place to clip a keyring or some other utility item like a compass that’s attached to a carabiner or similar device. There are plenty of pockets to stash your things, including one with a zipper and one with a flap that secures with a hook-and-loop fastener. • The Rocky Shorts version were a pleasant surprise for me. These shorts almost have the look and feel of “Old School” coaches shorts. They are lightweight with some stretch to them, yet they have an authoritative look to them that makes them seem more substantial than they actually are. I found them to be comfortable and very functional, with an array of useful pockets, including a zippered pocket on each side, in addition to the traditional pockets you find in trousers of all types. The Glaucous and Burnt Orange colors are distinctive and again lean toward that coaches-short vibe that I mentioned earlier, although they do come in some more subdued and pedestrian color choices as well. These shorts are comfortable and well designed, legit enough to be worn to a restaurant, but rugged enough to go out adventuring in. • The Hike Flex version was my least favorite of the versions because it is about as no-frills as it gets when it comes to nylon shorts. But that might be just the thing to make it your favorite version. These shorts are the lightest weight of all the versions, with a super-thin and breezy fabric that has just enough stretch to them to maintain comfort and to eliminate that annoying swishy noise that comes while moving around in nylon shorts made by other manufacturers. These shorts are great for hiking or hanging out in the desert heat. They breathe nicely and wick away moisture so you don’t start moistening up when the sweat glands are operating full-tilt. The belt loops are woefully thin, and the pockets are minimal, with just two side pockets and two back pockets that can be secured with a single button. (The shorts come with a pair of replacement buttons, which is good, because the minimalist design and stitching of the shorts probably means you’ll be needing one or both of them soon enough.) Most disappointing in these shorts was the zipper pull on the fly. This microscopic nubbin of a pull is laughably tiny and really hard to find and use when you’ve overhydrated in the desert heat and are doing that strange little dance that comes when you are about to pee your pants. While I was wowed and delighted with all the other versions, the Hike Flex variant scored a underwhelming “meh” from me after wearing them for some hikes in the punishing heat, and was solely responsible for landing the set with my four-star rating. Bottom line for all versions though: CQR makes an awesome slate of shorts for men! Most versions have deep mesh pockets that don’t make you wonder whether your stuff is still going to be in them after sitting down and standing up a few times. The designs and colors are all well thought out (except for that stupid, useless zipper pull on the Hike Flex), and the manufacturing quality has been great in every pair I have tried. They are super easy to launder—just turn them inside-out, toss em in the warm cycle and dry on a lower setting. The colors and fabrics hold up well use after use, and, unlike many nylon shorts, these don’t make you feel like you’ve somehow gotten greased up in Vaseline while wearing them; in other words, they are comfortable, with just the right amount of drape to them in the places that matter, and they don’t build up a hellacious static charge when you walk around in them all day. I would not hesitate to recommend these shorts to anyone! ... show more

  • Buy the shorts!
Wow. These surpassed expectations. The material and stitching are quality and fit is perfect (true to size). My husband has washed and worn these for weeks and they still look new. Lightweight, performance fabric is perfect for our hot and humid weather. My husband is quite picky about clothing - he gives these 5 plus stars. ... show more

  • Light weight, true to size
I needed a nice pair of shorts to complement my wardrobe. I wear these to work a lot. They have a expandable waistband, which I like, but I usually wear a belt with them. They’re very lightweight and cool on hot days. I can wear them out to dinner if I need to, I recommend these to anyone who wear shorts a lot and needs a little extra mobility and flexibility in the waste line. ... show more

  • Bought a pair and just bought two more
These are awesome. Perfect amount of stretch. Great fit. Wrinkle resistant. Quick drying. Extremely light weight and breathable. Unbelievably comfortable, they feel like walking around in gym shorts. Best bang for the buck shorts I’ve ever had.

  • Good light weight shorts
Size: 34W x 10L Color: Hike Flex Khaki
They’re not really cargo shorts. So took away a star. But excellent otherwise. Great for a day around water. Great walking shorts. Be great for golf. Okay looking. Light weight. Fast drying. Would like a little heavier fabric weave

  • Couldn’t decide between 5.11 and these
Size: 40W x 10L Color: Rocky Shorts Fuscous Green
Couldn’t decide between 5.11 and these, these are half the price and I’m so glad I got these. Great fit, amazing quality. The color is true to the picture and they fit great. I also got the pants and was worried about how heavy they felt but they are so cool and comfortable when worn! I love the water resistant material and really help in the Deep South heat and constant rain while on the farm. ... show more
