Description

One of the axes that received a recent design upgrade, is the 2 lbs. Hudson Bay Axe. This new ‘old-school’ design is one that will have a taller eye, to allow for a more secure and stable connection to the handle. With a larger poll, balanced head, and wedge shape of the blade, it will be a safer, ergonomic, and more efficient tool to use in the woods, at camp, on the homestead, while trapping, or within the tree service industry. The geometry of the blade/cheeks have more of a wedge shape, but still have a high centerline, to make it a better splitting axe for campfire wood. The head has a similar weight to the previous design, but will be balanced for better control, and allow for more accurate strike placements, especially when swung one-handed. This will make the axe safer and easier to use. We are now hardening the extended poll (back of the axe head), so that it can be used like a hammer, if the need arises. Highlighting this added benefit of a hardened poll, will help to promote the axe and draw industry wide attention, as Council Tool would be producing one of the only Hudson Bay axes, on the market with this design feature. This new ‘old-school’ axe head pattern was inspired by many of the design details, found in some of the older and vintage Hudson Bay axes, which were used the first half of the 1900s, and are still highly collectable today. Specs: ~ 2 lbs. head weight. ~ 3 5/8” Bit length from toe-to-heel. ~ 6” Overall head length from bit-to-poll. ~ Balanced head from front to back, with the center of mass within the eye, which reduces head-roll/blade-drop. ~ Longer hardened poll, with a taller eyewall, for a more secure handle connection. This creates larger poll face/surface area, so that it can be used as an effective striking tool, while also making good contact to drive HDPE plastic felling/bucking wedges. ~ 25 deg. Convex bevels/bit. ~ Wedge-shaped blade, with a high centerline, to help release the axe head while splitting.

  • good all around camp axe
I bought this to replace the 18" inch that a gave to my mom, she liked the feel and balance of that hatchet so much she said she wanted one, and having already did the work on the handle by scraping of the varnish and sanding it down to 800 grit, and oiled it with a mixture of tung oil. I decided to just give that hatchet to her as it was a bit too small for me anyway. So with this 24" incher on hand I decided to give the handle the same treatment, and gave the bit a good polished 20 degree edge. For those who are wondering, mine came with perfect grain orientation on the handle, the head mounted properly and the bit perfectly in line with the handle. As far as durability goes, I've only used it to split kindling and so far so good. I did however buy a leather mask for it as it did not come with one, but for the price, you really can't beat it. ... show more

  • one of the best values in the axe market
So far I'm loving my new CT axe. The handle is a great size at just under 24", and it's 2lb weight is well worth it's weight in my pack. Pretty sure my handle came unvarnished, which was really nice because it was very easy to apply some boiled linseed oil, which seems to be the tried and true method of choice for preservation of a wood handled tool. Great redesign on the bit too. hardened pole for hammering tasks, and near perfect balance f rom front to back, so no matter which orientation your swinging the axe, the head won't twist on you. Even if your using the side of the bit to tap in a tent steak or two. ... show more

  • So much improved
All the current Council Tool products are so much better than the used to be, 10 or 15 years go. Quality wise. The wood is way better; the handles are hung better. And, while I always liked their Hudson Bay pattern heads, the new design is definitely better. Now they make great axes at all their price points. This is a great axe --- that sweet spot right between a canoe axe and a felling axe. I grew up calling an axe this size a "boys axe." This is a very good example of that, at a good price. ... show more
