  • Excellent Extra Virgin Olive Oil, but Now Too Expensive
I have purchased this olive oil 16 times since first trying it in January, 2016 (checked it on my Amazon order history). I've tried several others during that time, including a few that were more expensive, and Corto is one of my favorites. It is certified extra virgin by the California Olive Oil Council (COOC), which you can see on their website. However, the certification label does not show on the box (it used to show, but was removed for some reason, and I have contacted Corto regarding that). A couple minutes after you eat any good EVOO, you get a mild burning or tingling sensation in the back of your throat, often described as a "peppery aftertaste", and usually accompanied by one or more coughs. This is from a type of polyphenol in the oil called Oleocanthal, which is a beneficial anti-inflammatory that is also said to help in clearing plaque from the arteries and assist in killing cancer cells. There are other healthy components besides the Oleocanthal. Most of the supposed EVOO you get in grocery stores is mixed with much cheaper oils like canola. I used this stuff for many years, mistakenly thinking I was getting the health benefits of a true EVOO. If you are getting 3 liter bottles in the $30 range or under, or not getting that throat tingling/burn, then most likely you are not getting a good extra virgin olive oil. I only try ones that are certified by COOC or the NYIOOC or other reputable certifiers. I really like the pour spout on the Corto box. It makes it so much easier to access the olive oil, as compared to the 3 liter cans with the spout on the top. I use it to easily fill a 500 ml green glass olive oil bottle with a stainless steel spout. Lately I have been purchasing directly from Corto, who are one of the sellers on this Amazon page. It costs more, but I want to be sure I am getting the freshest product possible. They ship directly from Corto, and use custom packaging designed for this product that is nearly indestructible. I would also encourage everyone to look at the Corto website, where you can see how they do everything possible to ensure their product is of the highest quality. Update: I inquired from Corto what varieties of olives were used, and what were the polyphenol levels, and received the following response: "Our Truly Extra Virgin olive oil is made from a combination of 3 types of olives, Arbequina, Arbosana and Koroneiki. Although we don't offer specific levels of polyphenols for our products, our olives are harvested in the fall when polyphenol levels are at their highest." From a little research, I found that Koroneiki olives are considered "very high" in polyphenols, and that Arbequina are considered "low". I didn't find anything on levels for Arbosana. I suspect that the overall levels of polyphenols in Corto would be rated a medium. I wish more producers published the polyphenol levels, as many of us use extra virgin olive oil as much for its health benefits as for its taste and flavor. Update (October 2020): There is a recent review (Sept 27, 2020) from a long-time Corto customer that has said goodbye to Corto due to major price increases, even though he considers it to be the best in the USA. I agree with everything in that review. There used to be other sellers here besides Corto that offered their oil in the $35-$40 range, and now it seems like they have left, or been pushed out. I have been purchasing Corto here for many years, but not for quite a while now. I've been trying other olive oils, and there are many high quality ones at excellent prices. To get a good price, look for the ones that offer it in 3 liter size or more, and get ones that are certified (e.g. NYIOOC or COOC). Compared to the last five I have tried, Corto is actually more expensive per liter than ALL of them, including a 2020 NYIOOC Gold Medal award winner that comes in a 5 liter size, and with the exact same bag-in-a-box spout you find in Corto. That one is an early harvest and very high in polyphenols, so some may not like the corresponding high bitterness you get with the early harvest. There are two others in the $40 range that are now my go-to choices, both in 3 liter sizes. My primary choice of the two is a 2019/2020 NYIOOC Silver Medal award winner, single origin, Koroneiki variety oil. Corto is a superb oil, and I also like supporting USA companies, but sorry. Price does matter. ... show more

  • Great Quality Olive Oil
I originally was introduced to this olive oil at an Italian restaurant I ate at. It has a great floral, light, and pleasant taste. Although it’s somewhat pricey, it’s great for dipping…for special occasions.

  • Stays fresh tastes great
Great California olive oil, green with wonderful body and flavor. Tastes as good as any Tuscan I’ve had in its price range. Live the airtight bag, keep the oil fresh for extended periods, however I find I go through it so fast it’s not an issue. Highly recommended.

  • My Favorite Olive Oil
This is my favorite olive oil I've tried and believe it is a good value for the money(the price for me has been stable for at least 3 years). I love the design that keeps light and air out keeping the product very fresh.

  • Everything you want in an olive oil and more
I have always bought Lucini premium select olive oil. I could get it from world pantry in a box like this one which not only saved money, but I firmly believe that olive oil stored in opaque containers lasts longer. Well like all good things, lucini quit producing the box and i came to amazon to look. I found this olive oil and gave it a try. That was a couple years ago, and now i need to buy more olive oil. I am pleased to say that i love the Corlo olive oil. I must confess i still put it in old lucini bottles and my wife has never known that we switched brands. I should mention that initially i hesitated to buy this oil with the questions about freshness that some people have expressed on Amazon. I have no idea the issue, but the oil was as fresh as anyone could ask for...at least those of us who don’t own olive trees! The box not only fits better in the pantry there is no risk of breakage or spills. Further the weight without the glass bottles is much improved. Bad olive oil is to me is almost as putrid as spoiled milk, while good olive oil is like a fresh cup of French press coffee. I am pleased to say that i look forward to buying the corlo, and the only lucini oil you will find in our home is the bottles i will keep filling :-). ... show more

  • Great but expensive.
I have purchased this olive oil 6-8 times. It is great, however, it just gets more and more expensive.
