  • Excellent tires that can tank!
Size: 27.5 x 2.6 Style: Der Baron Projekt
These tires are a HUGE upgrade from the Maxxis Rekon's I had on my Rocky Mountain. Those tires were light, soft, and were very quick, but just weren't right for what I was trying to use my bike for. They struggled for traction on the loose, messy trails here whenever I pushed my bike and spun hopelessly if I dropped the hammer. These, on the other hand, are grip MACHINES. I've handled steep 17% grades covered in loose leaves, gravel, and mud, with little to no slipping. In fact, the only times I've managed to make these tires break loose is whenever I roll over a loose stick or slick rotten log, and I doubt even the most agressive of tires could adress that. They're also dang near indestructible, and you can feel it. These tires are pretty stiff and feel like the pressure is much higher inside than it actually is. They're also heavy beasts, but when you're out on the trails, you really don't feel it. They are slow and have one of the highest rolling resistances among MTB tires. But man, does that grip pay off. TL;DR - If you want a beastly, near-bulletproof set of tires for mud, extremely loose soil, loam, or loose over hard conditions, and don't mins giving up weight and rolling resisitance, buy these now. ... show more

  • Super grippy trail bomber
Size: 27.5 x 2.3 Style: Mountain King
Super grippy, rolls decent, install was pretty easy if you have the right tools. Not the lightest tire but light enough for a gravity tire. This tire will bomb and eat up any trail you throw at it. It’s built so well, the protection apex carcus is thick and inspires confidence through the knarliest terrain. If your coming from lighter, XC tires than you will definitely notice the weight difference. I personally put these tires on my down country bike because I’m not a weight weeny, nor do I race, I just love sticking to the trails and bombing through the rough stuff. There actually significantly lighter than the majority of gravity tires on the market including nobby nics, maxxis minions, ect. I run the der baron 29x2.4 in the front and der Kaiser 29x2.4 out back. One of the grippiest setups I’ve ran to date. and highly recommend any of the continental lineup, protection apex, black chili tires, for there craftsmanship and affordability. ... show more

  • Very easy rolling and tough
Size: 29 x 2.2 Style: Race King
I wanted a higher volume tire for my adventure/gravel bike. I wanted something that had lower rolling resistance and all the reviews I found pointed to the Race King. The price was good so I tried them. I was not disappointed. The tubeless install was a little tougher than normal but eventually got them to "pop" with some soapy water. After riding them a few hundred miles, I really like the ride. On singletrack they have plenty of traction but on gravel they don't feel like they drag you down. I run them about 30-34 psi and they provided a nice amount of cushion on my single speed. They also seem very tough and resilient. Some tires I have tried are soft and comfy but don't have any puncture or tear resistance whatsoever. These are the Black Chili Protection version and I am very satisfied. I wish they made a tanwall :) But those probably wouldn't be a tough ... show more

  • Great Mountainbike Tire with Superb Road Handling
Size: 26 x 2.2 Style: Cross King
I needed to replace the two original tires from my Cannondale mountainbike, and chose the CrossKing. I really wanted the TrailKing, but they didn’t have the size to fit my wheels, but in the end, I think I like the CrossKing more than if I had got the full-on mountainbike tire. I found the CrossKing tire excellent in all conditions except loose dry sand, which is less than 1% of my riding. On the asphalt road surface (75% of my riding) the tire performs really very well, and is noticeably more grippy in the turns than my old tires. Off-road, I have no complaints, and it works just about as well as any full off-road tire I have used. I haven’t really been out much in the wet — the one time I did a wet road it felt stable and secure, but not idea how it performs in mud or extremely adverse conditions like ice or snow. I initially bought a single tire to see what I thought of it, and after a single ride, I ordered another to make the match, as I was really pleased with the performance. I would buy again. (In the photo, the top tire is the CrossKing, the lower one the original full off-road tire that I replaced) ... show more

  • Actual mounted width is less than 2.2"
Size: 26 x 2.2 Style: Race King
I have yet to do much riding on these 26 x 2.2" Race King ProTection tires, but my initial impression of their quality is positive. However, I do wish the actual mounted tire width was closer to 2.2" (or the 55 - 559 ETRTO specified width). As is typically the case, these tires mount narrower than their labeling indicates. I've mounted these with tubes on a set of 18 mm internal width rims. The actual mounted tire width at 30-35 PSI is 51 mm. So, they may mount a little wider for you if you run them tubeless or use a wider rim. UPDATE: A few additional things worth noting after a couple rides with these tires. First, their very smooth on pavement, and don't have any real road buzz, which is thought to find with a knobby tire. Second, the tires have expanded a bit since their first install. Now, their actual mounted width on my 18 mm internal width rims is 53 mm. Not quite an actual 2.2" width, but getting a bit closer. ... show more
