  • Kid and teen friendly and useful workbook to help address negative thinking
As a clinical psychologist working in childhood anxiety and OCD, I am always on the look out for good workbooks. Many times kids and teens dismiss workbooks that are available because the examples do not reflect their experience or their complexity. In Dr. Alvord's books and workshops, you can tell she is someone who talks with kids, likes kids, and works with kids. So she knows how they think when in distress and how to help them find their way out. Dr. Alvord and her co-author Ann McGrath add a book that is really needed. Many kids or teens have negative thinking that is a source of their difficultlies either with no diagnosis or in the context of anxiety and depression. By offering separate sections on the different thinking traps kids, teens, parents or therapiist can focus their work with practical suggestions. A really helpful and useful resource ... show more

  • Not written in teen friendly language
I purchase this book because I use several others by the same publisher in my practicing really like them. Hear my shoes with this book - the language in it is in no way written for teenagers except those with a college-level reading level. A lot of the the language in this work would not be familiar to teenagers, it's too sophisticated. I also believe the book gives a confusing structure to CBT. I used to assess with a fourteen-year-old who is of average intelligence, it wasway over his head ... show more

  • material is not very engaging
The beginning checklist about thinking errors is helpful, and I like the way the workbook is organized, with each chapter corresponding to a thinking error. But the way the material is presented...the clients I used the chapters with just did not connect with the material (the stories, the questions after). The workbook also does not do a good job of connecting the material to real life situations, and the questions it asks to try to do so are just not engaging (at least not for the teens I used this with). ... show more

My son has benefitted from working with Dr. Alvord tremendously. For those that don't have this opportunity, her book gives you many of her tools to help your teen. This book is easy to follow and has insightful and age-appropriate activities for teens. I am also a school social worker and will use this book with my students in the Fall. Also, check out her resilience builder book- another must have! Thank you, Dr. Alvord for all you do! ... show more

  • Great for Self-Help or Therapist Guided Exercises
This is a wonderful addition to anyone's self-help library. The authors demonstrate a deep understanding of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and explain concepts in a developmentally-appropriate manner, without jargon. They help teens understand their thoughts, identify how they are being upset by negative thinking, and provide practical steps on how to break the cycle of self-defeating thoughts. The exercises are poignant and helpful, empowering adolescents to take control of their thoughts and emotions, and take action in a way that maximizes potential success (and cope with less than desirable outcomes). I've used this with my CBT patients, who reported finding it very helpful and down to earth. ... show more

  • Excellent Resource for Teens
As a psychologist in practice for over ten years who specializes in treating teens with anxiety disorders and depression, I know first hand how difficult it is to find resources that are both accurate and readable. This book is great. The authors have done an excellent job of outlining and teaching the tools to help teens understand the thinking traps that they can get caught up in, which can impact mood and anxiety. We know that how we think impacts how we feel, and by changing our thinking to be more positive we can feel less stressed and happier - this book really helps guide teens on how to do this. Highly recommend for teens and parents of teens to read. ... show more
