Description

The piano sonatas of Franz Schubert are characterized by the supremely lyrical greatness that distinguishes all of this composer's work. The unfailing melody, the fresh modulations, and the emotional range — from blissful contentment to pensive melancholy — of these works place them firmly among the undisputed piano classics. This volume, reproduced directly from Series 10 of the definitive Breitkopf & Härtel Schubert-Gesammtausgabe, contains all fifteen of Schubert's piano sonatas: the charming early sonatas, the groundbreaking sonatas of the early 1820s, right up to the brilliant final sonatas. Noteheads in this edition have been reproduced in a size large enough to be read easily at the keyboard, and margins and spaces between staves are conveniently wide to permit written notes, harmonic analysis, fingerings, and running measure numbers. Essential to all classical pianists, this edition is also practical for study, reference, enjoyment — virtually any use. Read more

  • Good affordable edition
This book is a reprint of the 1888 Breitkopf & Härtel edition. Kudos to Dover for making this edition available, since you could spend 10 times as much buying another edition such as the Henle Verlag. This book contains the 15 completed sonatas, but not the incomplete fragmented works (You can find the remaining fragments in PDF format on the web, and assemble your own complete edition using my list below). The sonatas contained in this volume are: Sonata in E Major (1815) D.157 Sonata in C Major (1815) D.279 Sonata in A-flat Major (1817) D.557 Sonata in E Minor (1817) D.566 (but NOT the Adagio & Rondo D.505-6). Sonata in B Major, Op. 147 (1817) D.575 Sonata in A Minor, Op. 164 (1817) D.537 Sonata in E-flat Major, Op. 122 (1817) D.568 Sonata in A Minor, Op. 143 (1823) D.784 Sonata in A Minor, Op. 42 (1825) D.845 Sonata in A Major, Op. 120 (1825) D.664 Sonata in D Major, Op. 53 (1825) D.850 Sonata in G Major, Op. 78 (1826) D.894 Sonata in C Minor (1828) D.958 Sonata in A Major (1828) D.959 Sonata in B-flat Major (1828) D.960 Missing from this edition are: Piano Sonata No. 3 in E major, D. 459 (Funf Klavierstucke). Piano Sonata No. 8 in F sharp minor (fragment), D. 571/604/570. Piano Sonata No. 10 in C major (fragment), D. 613/612. Piano Sonata No. 11 in F minor (fragment), D. 625/505. Piano Sonata No. 15 in C major ("Relique"), D. 840. ... show more

  • Inside sheet music is printed upside down - Where is Quality Control?
Dover Publications for piano sheet music seems to be the cheapest due to lesser quality compare to G. Henle Publishers. I want customers to be aware of Dover's Shubert Sonatas before making a purchase. I am mainly interested in one of Schubert's sonatas -- and I will not return this book to go through return process and more hassle. The piano sheet music is legible but inconvenient since I have to open the book backward. Customers beware!!! ... show more

  • Great Book
Other than the ornaments, tempo markings, and dynamics, this book no other editing like fingerings. I suppose if you are at the level to play these sonatas, one can do one's own editing. Beautiful music!

  • NOT LARGE PRINT NOT EASY TO READ
I bought this based on one reviewer who raved that this was easy to read and print was clear, etc. I ordered it and found the print was clear but too small. It has six lines to the page, some lines have as many as seven bars. Very crowded. You can go by the number of pages for a particular work. I have a version I printed on line that has only four bars to the line, and five lines per page, larger notes and bars than this book. ... show more

  • Schubert piano sonatas
The music appears to be very clear and I like the way the pages lie reasonably flat. I have yet to find time to practice but intend to start learning in my retirement which will be beginning within the next couple of months. These beautiful sonatas are something I am looking forward to mastering.

  • Excellent musical collection with good (but not excellent) formatting
This is an excellent collection of Schubert's piano sonatas, which allows study of the composer's development in style and technique. The printing is clear and easy to follow in sight-reading. The only disadvantage is that the spine does not fold down as fully as it could.
