  • Good looking hiking boots!
Size: 9 Color: Dark Brown/Desert Sun
I'm very picky with my shoes. Tried these on and fell in love with them, and I tell you something, very few shoes get that stamp of approval. They are light, fit well, comfortable, and very good looking. Would buy again.

  • Better choices in Columbia's lineup
Size: 10 Color: Dark Brown/Desert Sun
The media could not be loaded. I have purchased a number of Columbia Buxton Peak li mid-high (their description, which I think has a typo in that it is likely II vs. "li"). These are about the same price when on sale as these Newton Ridge boots. I assumed that these Newton Ridge boots would be similar in quality and fit to the Buxton Peak boots that I have purchased 4 times over the years, and have been happy with for suburban hiking. Turns out, they are not that similar, which is a surprise. 1. These Newton Ridge boots fit differently at the same stated size. They have a tighter toe box and a looser ankle, which is about the opposite of what I'd normally hope for. 2. The NR need break-in before hard use because they are curiously more stiff than the BP and at the same time have less ankle support, which is surprising. I'd expect the need for break in to come with a stiffer, tighter, ankle support. 3. The NR have two sets of speed lace hooks vs. one for the BP. This would seem to be helpful to adjust the support of the ankle, but it is not that super effective in practice. Weird. 4. The insole is not as comfortable - it feels less cushioned than the BP. 5. Flat laces vs. round laces on BP Tread is OK, and the overall durability so far (10 miles of hiking) appears to be non-catastrophic. I'm keeping these as a backup pair of walking boots. l will stick with my Buxton Peak as my daily walking boot. Finally, I don't use either for my more serious hikes in near-wilderness (ie. national park stuff trails) and use my much more expensive Salomon's with full ankle support, etc. I just use the Columbias to grind up on pavement every day for my 5 milers. I'm giving these a 4, which is generous. I think at near the same price the Buxton Peak II are a much better boot with superior comfort, more support, and waterproof too. ... show more
