  • Great product to get kids into coding
Edition: 2024
My son loves this and has a blast with it!

  • Challenging and FUN!
My son loves his new code piano. It is easy to get started and gives him plenty of challenge and fun. We had a bit of trouble getting started and customer service was SUPER QUICK to help and resolve the issue. In addition they also followed up with us to make sure it was all working properly. This is a toy that promotes learning but also allows for free play. Right now it has more capability than my son (age 9) can comprehend(he wants to code but is very new to it) but he is working at it and enjoys playing with it! This is a great educational toy that I would purchase again for him! ... show more

  • Coding + piano = great gift
We got this for our ten year olds birthday. She loves coding and playing piano, and thought that this would fit the bill. It’s not quite as straightforward as I thought I would be, but she seems to enjoy it.

  • Easy to get started!
Edition: Jumbo
My kids immediately "get it" because it's a piano, then the projects sparked the idea that they could make changes. They followed the projects on my computer and learned a ton. They said it was the most fun coding they had ever done.

  • A cool teaching tool with some silly design choices
Edition: 2024
Product: Code Piano S.T.E.M. Coding Toy for Kids 8-12 Cons: - The board is stored loose within the container. There's not even an anti-static bag. The USB cord rubs against the circuitry in the container. I had to return my first order because a capacitor had come loose during shipping (or earlier). It took a few hours to realize why code deployment was so inconsistent (ie. sometimes it would fail to deploy, sometimes it would say it succeeded but would play completely random tones). Very frustrating. - Development is all through a web browser. I hope you like Chrome or Microsoft Edge because it doesn't support Firefox or Safari. You can't use it without an Internet connection. Also, Linux isn't supported at all, which seems weird for a coding teaching tool. - The website doesn't seem to have an option for saving code you've written, so be careful with the refresh button. You'll have to rely on copy-paste if you have any interest in saving things. - The speaker only supports playing one note at a time, so you'll have to arpeggiate your chords. - The board doesn't sit flat, so pressing the buttons is awkward no matter how you use it. - The tutorials could be better and there could be a lot more of them. The provided code doesn't really care about extracting repeating logic to functions to simplify things. My kid ended up writing hundreds of lines of unreadable code to solve a problem when functions could have reduced the line count to 10% and increase readability. Pros: - Once I finally received a board that wasn't damaged by the careless packaging, things went very smoothly. Setup was effortless. - The online tutorials were pretty good for kids, though I'd recommend avoiding the "block code" options because the editor is very finicky and it's arguable less readable than real code. I let my kid (age 10) play around with it and she didn't require much help. - If coding is completely new to you, the reference cards are really useful, especially when trying to understand the provided code. I recommend trying to guess what the starting code does before running it. - Once proficient in coding the board, it can act as a pretty cool keyboard, sound effect board, or arpeggiator. Overall, there are much cheaper kits that can do much more, that are also properly packaged. But with this kit, you're paying for the convenience of not having to build the circuit or set up a development environment. It's very much focused on the coding, which isn't necessarily a bad thing considering the target audience. ... show more

  • Great crossover for music-minded kids!!!
My daughter is taking music lessons and I want to make sure she gets exposed to science/coding too. This product is a great crossover between those two topics! There are lots of videos on the website showing how to get started and what each program is supposed to do, so it was easy to start. I don’t fully understand how all of the coding works but my daughter is able to make the piano play songs on its own and she’s learning how to write code! It’s incredible how fast she’s picking up on it. Very exciting for both of us. Highly recommend. ... show more

  • kids don't know how to deal with it

maybe the instruction is not very clear. kids don't know how to set it.

  • Great intro to coding !
As a programmer, i figured this would be a good start for my daughter.. and i was right.. Its interactive and keeps her attention. At 10 she chose to code with this rather than play in the pool...and thats saying alot.. I also found the debugging quite good as it clearly solidifies the importance of correct syntax. Looking at additional modules to purchase as well. Id say buy it, but it really depends on the student how much they will enjoy it.. On a sidenote, it would be nice to be able to use other languages as well.. eg java, c++ etc. ... show more
