  • Great for everything
Style: TrailBlazer 450
Bought them for outdoor adventures with my family, and they’re perfect, but didn’t realize how much we’d use them to stay in touch with the kids when they’re out playing. The sound quality is crystal clear, with zero static, even at long distances. The range is outstanding—they always work. The battery life is excellent, lightweight but solid. Easy-to-use for both adults and kids. Highly recommend, I’d buy them again. ... show more

  • Can you hear me now?
Style: TrailBlazer 450
In my very limited use, I am very impressed and happy with these. If their range is truly what is advertised, I will be extremely satisfied. As a scout leader, I am continuously on the go between different events and activities at a camp. The goal for these radios is to be able to communicate across varied terrain and distances. So far in the urban setting, they perform well and I really enjoy the ability to use privacy codes to limit our conversations between leaders during a trip or campout. At times, scouts will bring their own radios and they will try and crossover to the leader channels. I love the weather broadcast. We have, at times, had to try and get weather updates in areas where cell coverage is not available. In those cases, we now have the opportunity to receive NOAA updates, that's if NOAA will continue to operate in the near future. I love that they use a USB C cable to charge. The battery pack. Supposedly this has a 16 hour battery life but I'm assuming this is broadcasting on low with minimal usage. I will test this in full during our next trip. If I am a betting man, I would probably put this radio at 10 hour life with some usage. The thinking would be to have multiple batteries available on a trip. The connector between the radio and battery pack is very smooth and easy so I don't feel like I will break the connectors on swap out of batteries. Where I get a little concerned are: 1. The IP54 rating. For anyone who isn't familiar the first number in the IP rating is for particle contaminates. 5 indicates that it is dust protected. It's possible that dust or debris can enter different locations of the radio. For me, I don't really see this as an issue. The issue I have is with the second number which is for water rating. At a 4, it is protected from splashing water. For most cases, this is probably not an issue but if you are out caught in a storm, it's possible that prolonged rain could damage the radio. 2. Light button. Why did they put it on the same side as the call button, just a little lower? I don't like this because inadvertent light usage will drain the battery faster. I would have preferred they put it somewhere else as, typically, your radio should not be your light source. This is a great backup option but should not be your sole light. Overall, I think this is a great set of radios. I'm looking forward to doing some field testing and will come back with some additional findings once it is done. At the time of receiving these products for review, they were selling for $111. If they get close to the range they are advertising, then this will definitely be worth it. ... show more

  • Good design; Your results may vary.
Style: TrailBlazer 450
I have been trying out handheld radios for a while, trying to find one set that would deliver on their range promises. I am still waiting to be impressed. This set, while not delivering the range the advert blurbage touts, does however deliver a stronger signal than most. (It should be noted that ANY radio is going to be subject to the interference and restrictions of terrain.) I also found the fidelity of the audio to be superior--no reverb distortion, echo-effect, etc. The set seems to hold a battery charge quite well, and the re-charge time is relatively quick. Overall; this set has a good design and should deliver adequate use --provided that extreme range is not required. I could not get a signal to carry from 4 miles away, but then there`s that pesky 'terrain' factor. Wooded hills in the way. ... show more

  • Easy enough setup that someone with no experience can immediately get them up and running
Style: TrailBlazer 450
Cobra Trailblazer 450 GMRS Handheld Radios, 2-Pack. I picked these up for use at our cottage in Northern Wisconsin, where cell service is limited and phones usually don’t work. I thought these radios would come in handy in that situation. The Cobra radios are very well-built, with dust and water resistance, making them durable enough to handle whatever you or the elements throw at them. Which will be needed with my children using them at times. Before using them up North, we tested them locally in our suburban area. I had my kids drive to a gas station about a mile and a half away, which is about as far as we would need them to work up North. The passenger used the radio to chat with me. There are hundreds of houses between us, lots of trees, over mostly flat terrain. For this test, I was using just the radio power itself—I didn’t have them connected to a repeater which would extend the range. I was using Bank 2, Channel 4, which operates at the full 2 watts of power. Within a mile, the reception remained crisp and clear with minimal static. Beyond a mile, we started to hear more noise and static. When they reached the gas station, we could still communicate well however there seemed to be a few minor dropouts. At around 2 miles, the static became too much for the radios to be usable. I don't have much personal experience with high-quality radios like these, so for me, it was as simple as charging them up, turning them on, and matching the bank/channel on each unit to pair them. It was easy to set up, and they worked perfectly within a mile and a half range, exactly what I needed. I'm sure as I use them more, I'll figure out how to extend the range further. The light on the bottom of the handset, which you can turn on, was a nice added feature for nighttime use. It’s a great touch for visibility in the dark. ... show more
