At around $20 per radio, the value proposition of the UV-5R is insane. They're relatively well built, transmit and receive clearly in the 1-2 mile range, and are jam-packed with features. The interface is a little confusing and the included booklet isn't great at explaining everything the radio can do, but it's a popular enough model that there's plenty of great guides for it online and in print.
