This bit easily chewed through flattening some hard maple strips I glued-up for drawer-fronts. The inserts are razor sharp (as expected) and the tolerancing on the bit seems excellent. My router (a 15-yr old Bosch) didn't struggle at all so there was zero burning, and the resulting surface was as smooth as anyone could ask for. I guess this is what I'll be using forever... occasionally rotating and refreshing the inserts. Def recommend. ... show more

    • Pretty Unusual - A 1/4" Shank Surfacing Bit with Inserts - Good Quality

I've used surfacing bits and insert tooling in the past, but this is the first I've seen those features in a bit with a 1/4" shank. You typically see this technology in large cutters for use with industrial CNC equipment where these bits are used to surface spoil boards that the machine actually pulls vacuum through. This cutter may bring that functionality to hand routers or small home CNC equipment. It's well made, and comes with a nice plastic storage box and an allen wrench to secure/replace/rotate the carbide inserts. The inserts themselves are very sharp, and each edge is stamped with ID numbers to make it easy to rotate them all uniformly. On my bit, one edge of one horizontal insert had some chipping, which was a surprise. It's not a huge deal, there are three more edges to use, but I am surprised it made it through quality control - I deducted a star for this. Other than that, I can find no negatives with this bit. If you want to do surfacing operations by hand (I built a jig to do this on rough cut lumber), or if you want to use a smaller CNC machine to do planing or surfacing, then this is what you need. I think the price is fair for the kind of longevity that the insert cutter will provide. ... show more

Wow!!!! No burning! My CNC: Axiom Precision AR8. For this bit I run Spindle 6000rpm & Feed 90ft/min. Just perfect on any wood. The accumulated hours and hours over the years I had to sand with the Amana Spoilboard bit. I wish I had this 4years ago!
