I woke up early this morning and could not go back to sleep, so I opened my Kindle and there was "Christmas Present." It is not yet Christmas, but this was a lovely present. The story is everything you would expect from a St. Mary's chronicle--hilarity, pathos, suspense, danger, running, love, and a very large pig. So much fun and so satisfying. This entire series is one of my favorites! I am now in the third go-round--every time a new book comes out in the series, I reread them all! It's really just enormous fun to read--I have turned many of my friends on to them, and everyone has been pretty happy! The stories are terrific, the sense of humor is British and outstanding, and the cast is immensely likable. They do need to be read in order (in my opinion), but no one will be disappointed! ... show more

    • Raging Hords, Large Pigs, and a Merry Christmas
As a Yank, some of the word usage, events, and locations are unfamiliar to me, but thanks to installed dictionaries and Wikipedia, I got along just fine and read a wonderful, humorous, very British, and touching Christmas story that I would recommend to anyone. (Is that sentence long enough?) I thank sincerely the employees of St. Mary's and the (well-hidden) University of Thirsk for an hour of action, humor, suspense and good-feeling. May Jodi Taylor live long and prosper. I shall from now on, when Christmas comes around, think of very large pigs, burning buildings, blood, and long-delayed reunions. I also think a pig ornament for the tree would be very appropriate. Please read this story -- and listen to it as well. The audio version is spot-on and adds greatly to the general enjoyment. (And I also learned what a "plinth" is.) Read this story and get the audio version too. It costs next to nothing, but is worth much more. ... show more

    • Rescue Is Max's Forte
To go back and retrieve a lost mate from a recent trip is one thing bu to go back and rescue someone from ten years ago and time it to coincide with the landing of another pod is supremely dicey. But, Maxwell does it. These stories are just divine. The short ones are too short but you still can get a fix by re-reading the longer books 1-4. Everyone of these books is wonderful. This a wonderful "little" side trip into the past that very satisfyingly wrapped up a loose end in the first book of the series. With all of the characteristics of the other St. Mary Chronicles I've read so far...funny, suspenseful, interesting and well written. If you appreciate these characteristics in your reads mixed with history start with book 1 and enjoy! ... show more

    • A Quick but Important Series Addition
I've always enjoyed the St. Mary's shorts that give us crumbs of their antics while we wait for the full-length novels. But usually it's just a fun adventure with the usual humour and disasters the crew often encounter - enjoyable, yet not a necessarily needed to understand the series. This one however addresses a minor issue that has been mentioned on several occasions throughout the series and also helps set up some background info for future books, so definitely a good addition to the series. ... show more

Short and sweet. This was a nice short story edition to the regular series. Max and the gang set off to try and rescue two fellow historians that have been missing for 10 years.
