Description

A Chronicles of St Mary's short story that is sure to entertain. If you love Jasper Fforde or Ben Aaronovitch, you won't be able to resist Jodi Taylor. It's Christmas Eve at St Mary's And all through the house Nothing is stirring... Except for Max, Peterson and Markham, sneaking out at midnight for an assignment that is very definitely off the books. It's ten years ago tonight that Senior Historians Bashford and Grey went missing in 12th century Jerusalem. So how did they end up in AD60 Roman Colchester? Max has a theory. Peterson has a plan. Markham has bacon sandwiches. Colchester has Boudicca and her bloodthirsty Iceni hordes. And then there's the giant pig ... the enraged, giant pig... Readers love Jodi Taylor: 'Once in a while, I discover an author who changes everything... Jodi Taylor and her protagonista Madeleine "Max" Maxwell have seduced me' 'A great mix of British proper-ness and humour with a large dollop of historical fun' 'Addictive. I wish St Mary's was real and I was a part of it' 'Jodi Taylor has an imagination that gets me completely hooked' 'A tour de force' Read more

  • Raging Hords, Large Pigs, and a Merry Christmas
As a Yank, some of the word usage, events, and locations are unfamiliar to me, but thanks to installed dictionaries and Wikipedia, I got along just fine and read a wonderful, humorous, very British, and touching Christmas story that I would recommend to anyone. (Is that sentence long enough?) I thank sincerely the employees of St. Mary's and the (well-hidden) University of Thirsk for an hour of action, humor, suspense and good-feeling. May Jodi Taylor live long and prosper. I shall from now on, when Christmas comes around, think of very large pigs, burning buildings, blood, and long-delayed reunions. I also think a pig ornament for the tree would be very appropriate. Please read this story -- and listen to it as well. The audio version is spot-on and adds greatly to the general enjoyment. (And I also learned what a "plinth" is.) Read this story and get the audio version too. It costs next to nothing, but is worth much more. ... show more

  • Quick , Fun Read
It could possibly be the last Christmas Eve for one of the St. Mary’s crew, which leads Max, Markham, and Peterson to Colchester to face Boudicca’s army. Another enjoyable chapter from the St Mary’s timeline.

  • Glad I picked this one up
This is the first St. Mary's book I have read (or even heard of), having picked it up when it was available for free. It was a delightfully snappy romp and I'll be checking out the others. I'm not sure whether this is the ideal entry point to the series, but it explained just enough that I was able to get a good feel for the characters and the high concept. I recommend this to anyone who likes humorous adventure stories, as well as those who enjoy the study of history and don't mind looking at the subject with a playful eye. (Incidentally, I have these vague memories of a TV series, probably British, which aired 'news broadcasts' from historical periods; this book brought back memories of that program. If anyone knows what I'm talking about, I'd love to know the name of the show.) ... show more

  • love, and a very large pig
I woke up early this morning and could not go back to sleep, so I opened my Kindle and there was "Christmas Present." It is not yet Christmas, but this was a lovely present. The story is everything you would expect from a St. Mary's chronicle--hilarity, pathos, suspense, danger, running, love, and a very large pig. So much fun and so satisfying. Hooray and Thanks Again to Jodi Taylor and her wonderful imagination and knowledge of history! ... show more

  • Short but sweet
Once again, Jodi has delivered a fun and amusing read. These little extra book novellas provide enough humour to satisfy. Jodi Taylor is easily one of my favorite authors.

  • Christmas Eve rescue
I wondered how and who had rescued Grey and Bashford. This wonderful Christmas ghost (the muse of History) reimagining gives us the whole story. For Ian Guthrie it's been a long, sad ten years. After leaving Leon in charge of babysitting Ian, the Trio of Terror embarks on an unsanctioned mission to set things right. Naturally, the location is in Camulodunum moments before Boudicca's attack on the city. They are caught fleeing by the Queen herself and because of Max's intercession, or perhaps Boudicca's sense of humor, the group is allowed to leave. They return to St. Mary's relatively unscathed and Guthrie is given the best Christmas surprise ever. ... show more

  • A Quick but Important Series Addition
I've always enjoyed the St. Mary's shorts that give us crumbs of their antics while we wait for the full-length novels. But usually it's just a fun adventure with the usual humour and disasters the crew often encounter - enjoyable, yet not a necessarily needed to understand the series. This one however addresses a minor issue that has been mentioned on several occasions throughout the series and also helps set up some background info for future books, so definitely a good addition to the series. ... show more

  • Short and sweet
Short and sweet. This was a nice short story edition to the regular series. Max and the gang set off to try and rescue two fellow historians that have been missing for 10 years.
