I was introduced to Ferrol Sams many years ago when my sister-in-law gave my husband two of Dr. Sams books for a Christmas present. He was laughing so hard that I started the second book because I couldn't wait for him to finish the FIRST! Dr. Sams was our nephew's doctor when he was diagnosed with diabetes at 11. They were living in Atlanta. He signed one of our books for us. CHRISTMAS GIFT was always screamed as soon as my Mother's brothers, sisters and their families arrived at my grandparents home for our Christmas dinner--it was a race to see who could say it FIRST!!! What wonderful memories this book revived for me and my Mother before she died. Once you start any of Dr. Sams book, you can't put them down, but this one is so special and I try to read it every Christmas. Kay Kay Smith

We used this book for a book discussion group and found that the people who liked this book most were the older generations, especially those whose families have a lot of Christmas traditions. A couple were really disappointed in the book, but still thought it was worth reading because it brought to mind their own Christmases past. I was hoping it would turn out to be one of those books I would want to read every year at Christmas, and even give copies to others (I got that idea from a some of the reviews on Amazon), but it didn't turn out the way for me.

Dr Sams writes about rich Christmas traditions during the Great Depression in the rural South. He talks about the true meaning of Christmas and the manner in which his family embraced the holidays. The riches of tradition and family love far out valued the trinkets that could be bought at the local country store or maybe trip into a larger town. Baking pies from scratch, the Christmas turkey and finding just the perfect Christmas tree to cut down and display in the family home are just a few of the traditions he remembers and shares with his readers. Read this to your family especially during the holidays. It will make your spirits bright!

My husband is a voracious reader and loves Ferrol Sams' books, especially the trilogy about the boy. Bought this one for him for Christmas and it's probably the best gift I've ever given him - he was totally surprised and couldn't wait to dive into it. We read it aloud a bit at a time on Christmas Day and a couple more evenings after. A beautiful and vividly written memoir, it's sprinkled liberally throughout with good belly laughs, so it's both fun to read and easy to visualize Sams' family members and their Christmas celebrations. And there are tender memories, too. Could not have enjoyed it more - a great book that's a new Christmas classic in our home. I'd give it 10 stars if I could. Read it - you won't regret it.

Christmas Gift! describes Christmas Traditions in rural Georgia. Ferrol Sams, now deceased, practiced medicine in Fayetteville, Georgia. His family was large. The house where Christmas was celebrated sounds like a home all of us could love. The Christmas turkey might have been my favorite part of the book, but making a cake by hand literally was also fascinating. Hunting the Christmas tree was a winning part of the book also. I was entranced throughout the book and bought multiple copies to share. Ferrol Sams writes beautifully and readably. I recommend this book wholeheartedly.

I LOVED this book! I feel like I've discovered a hidden treasure to for many years to come. I read it to my Mother, 95 years old. She told me it helped her revisit many Christmases in her life.
