Description

The best-selling, most abundantly illustrated biography available of fashion icon Coco Chanel, written by Edmonde Charles-Roux, her close friend and chosen official biographer. “A model pictorial biography.” —New York Times “This Chanel biography is as elegantly turned out as its subject.” —Washington Post In this beautiful volume, the glorious life and world of the incomparable Coco Chanel shines again through lively text and a staggering collection of photographs, shedding new light on one of the great stories of the modern age. Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel (1883–1971) is a fashion icon unlike any other, arguably the most influential designer of the 20th century, whose creations remain as popular today as when they were introduced a century ago. She invented modern, chic clothing for women: she freed them from corsets, bobbed their hair, put them in simple bathing suits, and sent them out to get tanned in the sun. She introduced slacks, costume jewelry, the exquisitely comfortable and elegant knit suit, the “little black dress,” and the now- ubiquitous quilted handbag. She made the first couture perfume―No. 5―which remains the most popular scent ever created. And she knew and collaborated with the leading creative minds of her day: the likes of Picasso, Diaghilev, Stravinsky, Cocteau, Jean Renoir, and Visconti―as she matched their modernist innovations by liberating women from the prison of 19th-century fashion and introducing a whole new concept of style. • Nice book
Format: Hardcover
This book is very fascinating about the life of Coco Chanel. It reads interesting, capturing the reader's attention. The old photographs are interesting, as well. I was pleasantly surprised and not at all bored by her life story and the manner in which it was told. Mademoiselle Chanel was quite a woman, She totally invented herself, she was her best creation. she was not what one would call beautiful, but the woman had style and she knew knew how to work powerful men, a priceless talent in her day and unfortunitely to this day. Not only beautifully written, it gives you a perfect picture of a fascinating era and a fascinating woman. In a way Chanel lived ahead of her time, on the other hand she had a perfect sense how to translate that into the time she was living. I thoroughly enjoyed the book. ... show more

  • Immerse Yourself in Chanel's World
Format: Hardcover
If you are looking for an introduction to Chanel and her world, begin here. It is a pictorial biography with about 2/3 text and 1/3 images highlighting the narration. It is great to read about a person or place in Chanel's life and then look to the photo above and see what the author is describing. You feel as if you are going back in time. Edmonde Charles-Roux was a friend of Chanel and editor of French VOGUE. This is a sympathetic portrayal. It is as much about the people and places which surrounded Chanel as Chanel herself. There isn't much coverage of Chanel's activities during WWII or directly afterward. The emphasis is more on the positive and creative parts of Chanel's life. I found the years when Chanel first set up business through the 1930's the most fascinating. It is a fairly quick read. Loved the abundant images on every page. You visually immerse yourself in her world. There are wonderful quotes of Chanel's sprinkled throughout. ... show more
