  • A INCREDIBLY beautiful and informative deck.
Format: Cards
Firstly, I'd like to say I'm more of a tarot collector than an active practitioner (given inexperience) so please read with a lil grain of salt in mind. With that out of the way, I am in love love with this deck. Superficially, the art is astounding and colorful with vibrant depictions of a number of ethnic groups and cultures. There is no shying away from the richness of skin color and portrayal of clothes and fabrics associated with each individual group. I'm not 100% sure about how accurate the depictions are, but the inclusivity is 110% better than most mainstream, white-washed decks that one would typically find. Also, the cards (and stories associated) are LGBTQ inclusive for those looking for a little bit of that. I adore the finish of the cards because I simply have a hard time shuffling cards without a little grip (I have butter fingers). I also really like the linen texture to the cards, giving it a more multi-sense experience for me as a tactile person. For me personally, I already knew more than half of the folktales/myths/lore associated with each card, as well as simply knowing about the Raider-Waite deck in general. HOWEVER, the combination of the two makes it so much simpler for me to get a read off of. Initially, some of the associations were a little off to me, but if you really understand the point of the stories associated, it can make for a much deeper connection to the meaning of the card as a whole. But also, the whole thing is up to your interpretation--so really, it's whatever you like. That being said, it is really helpful to actually know the stories. The book associated with the cards is helpful, but unfortunately still very surface level--and it doesn't break down some cultural aspects that are tied to the stories. If you don't have a deep understanding or emotional tie for some things/concepts that aren't translated well between East vs. West, it can be confusing/feel like a wrong match. You might have to do some extra research. If you're looking for a "quick-and-easy" pretty deck that you can simply read like any other standard RWD, I don't think this is the one. If you ARE someone who appreciates lore and exploration of culture to a deeper depth of understanding and don't mind researching and looking up the information and ties to each individual culture, then I think this deck is a beautiful, multi-learning experience. Tying the stories to the cards and back really helped me learn more about both and I find that to be such a wonderful way to strengthen my appreciation and curiosity for both. TL;DR If you're a myth nerd and love tarot, you'll probably like it. If you want a sleek aesthetic deck, just be ready to do some research or you may not enjoy. ... show more

  • exceeded expectations 1000-fold
Format: Cards
these cards are, very simply, gorgeous. the artwork is deft, subtle, rich, and evocative. the selection of folk or fairy tale for each card is apt, often stunningly so. i was expecting something pretty and appealing to my love of global tales, and not necessarily deep or resonant for doing actual readings. i collect artistic tarot decks, so that was fine. but i was blown away by the genius of art plus tale selection here; to say it "exceeds expectations" is a massive understatement. and yes...you can read with it, as it follows the basic waite-smith deck conventions. if you are not familiar with the folk or fairy tale on a card, you may need to consult the accompanying booklet for clues and/or (even better) look up the tale referenced. i have spent my life studying fairy tales and folk motifs, so i was familiar with most of the images on sight. even so, there were a number of less familiar ones i needed to reference, and that is great---i learned something! it's a truly global deck, with tales and figures spanning the world both geographically and in time; everything from gilgamesh to john henry. i felt a special joy on recognising tam lin as 'strength', and seeing vasilisa as the 9 of wands. and i found the choice of sedna for the 10 of swords poignant and appropriate. i found the card stock to be no worse than expected for the price point, and the textured finish is fine. my cards were well-printed, with no evident over-runs or errors. the box is sturdy and well-designed. the accompanying book is more than adequate to enjoy and use the cards. i didn't expect a full synopsis of every tale, and the brief explication provided for some of the tales less commonly known in western/euro-centric societies was perfectly adequate. as i said, it's easy and enriching to look up anything unfamiliar. apparently there is a book created to go along with this deck, and i absolutely intend to check that out soon, but it's not a necessity. i loved the deck specifically because these are not the toothless, pastel, disney-fied tales, but rather the complex, often ancient, stories of our common human heritage. life is a tapestry of dark and light, and old tales reflect that. the tarot, traditionally at least, also reflects this complexity. i am delighted that the artist was true to both tarot and tales in creating this beautiful, resonant deck. unreservedly recommended. ... show more

  • Stunning art, sturdy cardstock, amazing flow from each theme to the next
Format: Cards
I pre-ordered this deck quite some time ago and am so excited to finally have it in my hands. The imagery in these cards are absolutely stunning. The box, as another reviewer mentioned, is pretty big, but it is beautiful and for anyone who wants to display it amongst their collection will welcome its grandeur (I hope). The cards themselves are printed on very sturdy cardstock (perhaps linen cardstock as someone else mentioned), and has a canvas-like texture. In my opinion, this adds to the artistic feel of the deck. The themes depicted are varying in culture, color, and beliefs. There is no singular focus, but it works so well. I appreciate the guidebook, especially for those who are newer to reading tarot. It has basic definitions of what the imagery is based on, as well as simplified versions of the tarot "meanings." I did also buy their book released simultaneously, "Beneath the Moon." I only skimmed it this morning, but each page goes much more in depth for the artwork featured in the deck. It isn't a necessary purchase, but I would imagine that reading through it could provide some more insight into these cards' meanings than just the simple explanations in the guidebook. It will also be an interesting read to learn about myths and fairytales from other cultures! I am blown away by this deck in its entirety. The only thing I could have asked to be added, which does not affect my rating due to its frivolousness, would be for colored or gilded edges rather than white. But this usually adds extra production costs and thus creates a more expensive product. The deck still holds its own with white edges :) ... show more

  • Beautiful deck, stories perfectly illustrate cards
Format: Cards
I bought this deck because I kept seeing the beautiful illustrations online. I don’t really relate to traditional Tarot artwork and miss parts of the symbolism because they’re so busy and uninviting. The book that comes with the set has the illustrations and a brief summary of the fairy tale. I like the offered interpretations of the cards, too. They are to the point and accurate. I purchased Yoshi Yoshitani’s companion book, Beneath the Moon, which I highly recommend as an adjunct. I wanted to know more about the fairy tales, because they so beautifully illustrate the meanings of each card. But it’s a perfectly fine deck without it. I have a couple of other decks, and I’m unable to properly shuffle them because I have small hands and the cards are so stiff. In this deck, the cards are the same large format but are flexible enough for me to easily shuffle. They are plenty sturdy. Do I love the shiny, textured finish on them? I don’t. But the magic of this deck is the artwork, which is superb, the meanings presented, and the stories, which help me remember the cards better than anything else I’ve used. ... show more

  • Inclusive Tarot Card
Format: Cards
The tarot deck is very nice. The cards are large. The artwork is awesome. The characters from all types of worldly stories such as French fairy tales. Chinese, Japanese, Native American, African, Indian, Persian, Arabic. there's even Greek, Mexico, and Danish characters. One doesn't feel boxed in with made up meanings to go with vulgar or inept classifications. There is something for everyone. ... show more

  • Both timeless and modern, stunning deck!
Format: Cards
I have been waiting for this deck for so long and I am so excited to finally have it! I wish my photos were able to do it justice. The art is stunning and I love all the details packed into the cards despite the deceptively simple art style. The theme is myths and fairytales from around the world and it really feels like one of the most diverse and inclusive decks I have seen. The artwork is quite cheerful in tone with rich, vibrant colors. Due to the timelessness and universal appeal of fairytales and myths I could see this deck being appealing to many different querents for years to come. While I could not find any overtly disturbing imagery, there is very mild nudity in a couple of cards. I would say the deck is not inappropriate for younger readers because of the light, animated style of the art itself. The deck is comparable to the Light Seer's in size and thickness, though they feel a tiny bit heavier and are much more flexible, making them far easier to riffle shuffle. The cardstock is a nice linen finish, which feels very smooth and non-sticky. While the cards are neither glossy or matte, the visible texture of the linen finish on the cards may be unappealing to some. They remind me of casino playing cards, which feel a lot higher quality than most other mass market decks. Due to the size and weight, readers with smaller hands may have more difficulty shuffling. The packaging is gorgeous with a sturdy clamshell box decorated with metallic gold accents. The accompanying guidebook is full color and while on the shorter side it includes a decent amount of information. For each card the book includes the name of the farytale/myth, origin, a very brief (2-3 sentences) summary of each story, and upright/reversed keywords. For any reader with an interest in mythology or fairytales, I would highly recommend this deck. I am blown away by the art and impressed with the overall design and quality of the deck. It is much higher quality than I expect from most mass market decks. I can only hope that other publishers will take note. Lastly, I have not already but will definitely be purchasing Beneath the Moon which contains the full length stories that were used in the deck. ... show more

  • Stunning, powerful cards but not beginner friendly!
Format: Cards
These cards are beautiful. They are not at all beginner friendly. Please rease. Interesting texture and art is stunning. I purchased the storybook that goes with them. There is a few issues I have with the guidebook. It is not that beginner friendly. It's very short and some of the stories don't really match up with the meanings of the cards. However the biggest problem that I have with this deck is one I don't know if many people will understand. When they arrived I love them immediately. Even if the box had some damage there was no way I was sending them back. They're tarot cards you can't just do that. Once you have them they're yours. Such strong energy and they begin speaking to me immediately when I blessed them and introduced myself. My first few readings were amazing however quite quickly my reading stopped making sense. The card seem to be almost hostile. I realize now that my inexperience had led me to overcharge them and misunderstand their energy. I put them in my car took them to my friend and even though she was more experience she didn't get it either. I ended up leaving them in my car because I just didn't feel welcome using them. Over time they became neglected. They felt abused. They had arrived abused. They had arrived with what I could only describe as trauma from being mishandled somewhere in the process of being made and shipped to me. Being a beginner I didn't understand why am I readings weren't working and why I felt what I felt. I ended up abusing and neglecting the cards even more. When my energy sensitive friend pick them up they completely sapped her of energy and made her sick. We blessed and cleansed them very well and put them in moonlight. She owns them now and they're better. I've heard other people say that these cards have arrived with weird energy for them too. These cards are powerful and something is happening in the process of making them. They are not beginner friendly but they are extremely beautiful and worth buying. I love these cards. I do recommend them if you understand how to handle energies. ... show more

  • Absolutely Gorgeous and Enchanting and an absolute steal for the price point
Format: Cards
As always there are those customers who complain that the deck they paid less than MSRP for is not engraved by artisan craftsmen on slabs of imported European marble. I am unsure how one has the expectation that the deck they purchased for under $20 is not on the same card-stock as Pagan Otherworlds or the True Black tarot (which cost at least three times the price of this deck) but I digress. The card-stock is just fine and in fact better than many other mass market decks. This deck is a steal at $17 (what I paid) and easily worth the full $20 price tag. More importantly, the artwork is stunning, thematically consistent and both enchanting and inspired. The deck is accessible to anyone familiar with the RWS system and reads beautifully. The guidebook (basically a deluxe LWB) is full color and gives succinct explanations of each cards, with teases of the folk and fairy tales that inspired each card (for the minors and court. The majors are a bit more vague). However this is a hard cover companion book with expanded versions of each fable that I am most certainly ordering now that I have seen the deck. There are a couple of misprints in the LWB and the spreads are rather pedestrian but it is more than adequate. The cards span the world and represent diversity nicely. It's in no way the usual just pretty white people that many decks showcase. The book and deck come packaged in a handsome, quality box, that make the deck feel a bit more special and luxurious than the bargain price tag warrants. If you love tarot, are a fan of folklore or just love beautiful illustration, buy this deck. If you are that miserable and entitled that you give this gorgeous work of art a one or two star rating because the card-stock is not on par with what you may receive with a boutique, independently published deck go ahead and skip this deck and save your pennies to buy one of those. Or if you do please refrain from posting a pointless review that is not criticism but just complaining. I could not be happier with this deck and cannot wait for the companion book. Near perfection. ... show more
