This is the first time I have used any type of Planer what had this kind of upright handle. I kind of like it. I don't use hand planers often so my experience is fairly limited but I really like how easily this works. I have used on some ash and some Doug Fir and it worked just as well on the harder ash as the soft wood. I really appreciate the extra cutter blades included with the planer. The large brass thumbscrews make it easy to hold the blades in place. The built-in level is a nice touch as well. The tool feels very solid and should last a very long time with proper care. The media could not be loaded. This chamfer plane set from Clarke Brothers is made out of aluminum and comes with 7 interchangeable steel blades for cutting different edge profiles. The tool is easy to adjust and changing out the blades is straightforward. There are two allen wrenches included in the set for installing a removable metal guide plate and the wooden handle. There are quite a few competing products at this price point that use this same basic tool design, however, some include only three roundover blades or do not have the wooden top-handle nor the guide plate. I tested the plane on some scrap SYP 2x4, using the 1/4” roundover blade and also the double roundover blade (see video). Note that I sped up the video to keep it short. I have used shoulder planes before and, as with those, the key to getting a good edge profile with a chamfer plane is to make many light passes, each with a very slight increase in the depth setting of the blade; if you lower the blade too quickly, the plane will bite-in and it can bind and/or create tear-out. I was satisfied with the resulting edges I got with this plane. After trying this plane out, I found that my hand felt most comfortable grasping the spine of the tool where the handle is attached (you can see this in the video); I used the allen wrench to remove the handle and I feel like I have better control of the plane now. ... show more

I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of this chamfer plane! It's made of good quality materials and cuts well. There are seven different blades with it to cut different profiles. Also included are a guide for keeping the guide at the correct angle to make accurate chamfers. Also, two allen wrenches are included for making adjustments. A nice touch is that the allen wrenches are color coded to help pick them out in the toolbox. One piece of advice on using the plane is that the blade should be adjust for a shallow cut at the beginning and then adjusted for a steeper cut step by step. This will give a cleaner cut and will keep the blades from digging in to the wood. Very nice plane to add to my collection. ... show more

This is a nice plane. It comes with seven different blades to cut different profiles. It has a good weight and solid frame. The blade holder is adjustable so you can take smaller passes to avoid tear out. It comes with a bolt on platten to aid in keeping it straight against the edge to make your forming straight. I have large hands so I have a problem with the handle. It is both small and has a "tail" at the top that to me makes it feel like my hand is forced down in the back. It is removable so I believe I'll be able to make a taller one without the tail so it will fit my hand better.
