  • Terribly Overhyped
[Minor Spoilers for the first volume] Hear me out here. Of Fujimoto I have read the first volume of Chainsaw Man, the first two volumes of Fire Punch, and just recently Goodbye, Eri. The last is the most coherent to me, but they all seem to suffer a similar problem - they are rushed, have twists to have twists, and the first two seem to bask in shock value and fetishes to draw people in because these things exist. Violence and adult themes are not an issue - I am currently reading Blade of the Immortal (which I like) and have read Garth Ennis in the past (not that I particularly liked how he handled his subjects). So, heavy themes and violence aren't a problem. The problem is that the characters are shallow and barely explored. The writing is janky and reading this volume makes me feel like it's incomplete - as if I am missing about a hundred pages. I don't mind nebulous stories that build but I feel like a good amount of world-building simply will not be there later on. Things happen because they have to happen. There are Devils and we kill those, but wait, we work with them, and there's a government agency that kills these things, but also employs them, and there's bounty hunting which apparently even a teenager can get into with the mob collecting on some of the money for some reason before allying with said devils. And humans 'infected' with a devil or actual devils are allowed to wander around government buildings without much thought, or background check, or idea of their loyalty. I understand that probably one of the characters we meet is going to be the villain just because of how they act but that doesn't mean that it is satisfying to make them nothing more than a cut out of a domineering woman who calls our hero a dog, treats him like a dog, and acts in mysterious ways because she's mysterious. It doesn't make her a commanding character, it just makes her sound whiny and self-important, even more so because we don't know her job, her powers, her fighting skills, really anything about her except she's pretty and our hero likes pretty. Great. In fact, women seem to be drawn and written in this way which isn't a good thing, especially because this is a Shonen Jump series. It actually makes me think of Death Note, where women were portrayed as pretty much useless outside of in-the-way or eye candy. Given the demographic of the publication, that isn't a good look. I also wouldn't doubt that the rushed feeling to this plot is due to the pressure of Shonen in the misguided belief that if it isn't big, flashy, and always moving that they'll lose readers. The overall rushed feeling does this book no favors. We were skipping from one thing to another to another, in rapid succession. Which was a shame because I was on board for the first little while, up until Makima shows up. I know people complained that Denji was bland, but I liked him. We were just meeting him, and despite his circumstances, he managed to be a kinder soul than the world around him. I liked his relationship with Pochita. I liked the ideas with the mobsters. It's just a shame it was all over so fast and we got into the weirdly fetishized plot as it blindly rushed forward and gave us less and less. Whatever character we got for Denji at the start seemed to devolve into a person a lot less interesting and savory, especially since I believe he is supposed to be around sixteen. And there were a few good ideas that would be interesting - such as the type of world that caused these devils to be a threat, to begin with - if I thought it was something that would have a satisfying answer. I liked the idea behind the influence of the devils that we meet along with Denji. There are good ideas here but they are caught in a flurry of overly fast pacing that causes the story to feel shallow and ultimately without a foundation. ... show more

  • Great read
After watching the anime I had to get the manga. Anyone interested in giving it a go it's worth it. Has great action and it really gets you attached to the main 3.

  • Good book, somewhat short, and a few other notes...
I bought this having already watched the anime in it's entirety as I wanted to see what bits and pieces made it in / what didn't, and any visual differences for fun. If you've already watched the anime, the first volume here is virtually identical sans a few minor styling choices and seems to cover episodes 1-3 (well, up to 3/4s of the third episode). There's only 1 particularly noteworthy scene very early on that wasn't included in the anime, and the anime has a few scene extensions vs what's shown in-book. It's definitely worth it on the basis that it's like a whopping $6-7 as of writing alone if you really like the show and want to have it for the sake of having it. That being said however even if you're buying it blind, seriously consider buying the other volumes along with it. It's ~190?-ish pages and you can definitely blast through it in one sitting. ... show more

  • A young man on a quest…for boobs
I bought this for my kid one Sunday Funday because she loves manga and had her eye on it for a while. I finally got around to reading it myself. I sent her a picture of the title page for Chapter 5: A Way to Touch Some Boobs because I thought it was pretty funny. She said that’s pretty much the story. Guy who spawns chainsaws from his limbs hunts demons in his quest to touch some boobs. Will he ever get to touch some boobs? Only time will tell. ... show more

  • Interesting start
This was definitely a different seres to start. The background of the character is given pretty quickly, but then a little more is added here and there throughout the volume. We’re introduced to characters in the same way of not getting much info about them, but getting teases of what sound like some intense stories. Plenty of violence and gore in this, but it doesn’t have it just for the sake of shock value or pushing the envelope. I am interested to see where the story goes from here. Power may be my favorite character at this point, beating out our hero by just a tiny bit. ... show more
