  • Excellent performance and a great value
Size: Ultima 100 - 45°
The media could not be loaded. Celestron is a trusted brand and this spotting scope delivers! I bought for wildlife viewing and video use. There is some color fringing due to non-ED glass but sharpness (resolution) is fantastic for this price range. Best value for the money in 100 mm spotting scopes! Also, no funky image shifting when focusing but tiny focus adjustments are necessary when zooming. The sight tube works well both day and night! ... show more

  • Still on the lookout for a perfect scope...
Size: Ultima 100 - 45°
I wanted to love this spotting scope (the Celestron 52252 100mm Ultima Zoom Spotting Scope with 45-degree-angle viewer). I tried using it three times in different environments and situations, but I ultimately decided to return it. Here's why: My first complaint really has nothing to do with the scope itself but with the variation in viewfinders. I'll throw this out there for anyone looking for an actual spotting scope to use target shooting: Decide whether you truly want the 45-degree angled viewer or if you should get the straight viewer. I should have got the straight viewer, and didn't realize this until I was at the range-- and having to stand up every few shots to get above the scope. Again, this is not part of my criticism of the Celestron, but just a thought. This scope is huge. It's much bigger and heavier than I expected. Now, I suppose in fairness to Celestron and the intentional design of the scope, it wouldn't be right to criticize a full-size pickup truck for being too big, or criticizing a large hunting knife for being too long. A large diameter scope is going to let in more light, and when you buy a scope like this, you know that going in. But given the size of this scope, I did not see the added benefit that I expected (e.g. better sharpness, better light gathering, etc). I compared this Celestron (at a setting of 45x) side-by-side with my now-discontinued Leupold spotting scope of a much smaller size (Leupold Sequoia 15-45x with 60mm objective). The Celestron looked a *little* brighter and more clear, but not nearly enough to justify the added cost, weight, and unwieldy size of the Celestron. The scope is very awkwardly balanced. The front of the scope is heavy because of the glass and Celestron therefore should have put the location of the tripod mount at the actually balance point of the scope. They didn't. They instead set the tripod mount back towards the viewer, and they included an offset adjustable adapter to allow you to balance the scope. Why not just balance the scope in the design!? To make matters worse, the offset adjustable adapter introduces more vertical play in the whole mix. The viewer came with a rubber eye shade that kept falling off. I picked it up twice from the ground after it fell off. Would have liked to see a little better quality control on this. Lastly, I tried three tripods and couldn't get one stable-enough to really handle this scope. Because it's very heavy, because it's very long, you end up with a sort of upside down candle-apple effect. The scope-- when mounted on a tripod-- is really top heavy unless you've got one helluva tripod. There are two ways to go to stabilize this scope: (1) get a short and rigid table-top tripod without a quick-detach plate (these seem to introduce a lot of play), or (2) get a very sturdy (ahem, expensive) and weighted taller tripod. My decision to return this scope was ultimately made by comparing this side-by-side with the Leupold Sequoia 15-45x with 60mm objective as mentioned above. The Celestron was brighter and a little more clear, but for a nearly 30% increase in the size of the objective lens (and all the extra size and weight), it just wasn't worth it. While the Celestron can be dialed-in to 66x, it's really testing the limits of the scope, and eye relief drops way down and the image gets a little blurry around the edges. To pour salt in the wound, the Celestron was also bouncing all over the place. Testing two different tripods with both the Leupold and the Celestron, the bouncing was much worse with the Celestron because it wasn't balanced well, and there's just so much more weight wanting to move the head of the tripod around. I'd like to ultimately find something with a little more power than the Leupold Sequoia, but for now I'd rather max out at 45x than to have the Celestron bouncing around a bit blurry at 66x. ... show more

  • Great range spotter but not so good for other uses.
Size: Ultima 100 - 45°
So, I went to the range with my new Ruger 10/22TD rifle and started plinking away at a small target 100 yards away, using a nice 3-9 Pentax riflescope. After a few shots, shooting this very small diameter ammo, I realized that I was either missing the target completely, or the holes in the target were too small to see, even with my riflescope set on 9x power. After the first session was over, I did the 100 yards walk and was pleasantly surprised to see many holes on the target, some very close to the center. I then embarked on quite a lot of research to find a suitable spotting scope. My criteria was that I wanted something to use on the range and also to use for general enjoyment, including terrestrial and star gazing. After reading many reviews, I decided that this particular scope, with its huge 100mm objective (front) lens offered the best design for multi uses. 1/ On the range, it is superb. Those small .22 round holes on the target stand out sharply at 100yds and more. Score 10/10. 2/ For terrestrial viewing, it is very average. Like all spotters, it is more comfortable to use in the lower magnification range. The 100mm lens brings in a lot of light, but could be sharper. Score 7/10. 3/ Astronomy. Pointing it at Saturn, I could see 4 of its moons. However, not very impressed by the scope's clarity when looking at the moon. Score 6/10 Overall, my wife and I were disappointed by the sharpness of the optics and also the fairly shallow depth of focus. It is excellent as a shooting range spotter, but so-so for terrestrial and astronomical uses. However, it is probably better than many other spotters out there, especially ones with 80mm or 60mm objective lenses. There is a big jump in price to the high-end Kowa's, where the overall performance is outstanding. We now only use this spotter for the range, where it is good, but less fun to use elsewhere. The included bag offers good rain protection, but is not padded. Scope can be used while inside its bag. The scope's construction is impressive and the zoom and focus wheels turn smoothly and feel good quality. Nice looking item, nice finish and good value. You would have to pay more than double to get a better scope. I noticed that Celestron offers the same scope with a much more expensive eye-piece. Possibly greatly improves sharpness. Get a good quality, stable tripod that rigidly supports this big spotter. Also, don't lose the front lens cover, because it falls off easily. Finally, a very well constructed scope. Perfect for the range. However, if you are an avid bird watcher, you will need to spend much more to get much more. ... show more
