My most important observation is that this carrier is almost perfect for transporting a cat on a plane or train but not ideal for taking your cat on a hike or other outing where you intend to have your cat enjoy a ride on your back as you walk. The carrier is too enclosed and too rigid for this purpose for most cats. I haven't yet trained my kitten to ride in a carrier, but I'm pretty sure this will meet her needs. I would guess the compartment is solid enough to hold a cat up to 10-12 lbs. There are 2 mesh areas for fresh air and to see outside world. There are additional windows that can be fully opened, but a cat could escape through these so I wouldn't recommend opening these unless you know your cat isn't the escaping type. UPDATE: Now that I've put my cat in the carrier I have a few observations to pass on. First, the main door is way too big to keep a squirming cat from escaping as you try to close the zipper. Really only the smaller side door is practical for most cats. Second, once the cat is in the carrier it's hard to see them through the mesh. There is just too much fabric in the mesh to see through. Third issue is the metal frame is uncomfortable laying on your low back or hips as you travel with the cat. Everything is well sewn and the fabric is good quality. There's an additional pocket to store items such as treats, leashes, etc. and the straps are padded well, so unless your cat is really heavy, it should be comfortable to wear the pack around for a while as you cruise your neighborhood. As long as your cat is fine with enclosed spaces, and trained for this sort of transportation, I think they'll be happy in this carrier.
