  • Best oil I have ever put in my car.
Size: 5 Quart Style: Advanced Full Synthetic Configuration: 5W-30
Once upon a time, my car (which I inherited at 120,000 miles) had a significant amount of piston slap during a cold start. After it warmed up, it would go away. I figured it would be an interesting experiment to switch to synthetic oil to see what the hype was about and if it really made a difference in engine longevity, especially now that my engine was "getting on in its days". I got some of this Castrol 5w30 full synthetic purely because BMW and Triumph motorcycles use it as their factory fill. Maybe Castrol pays them to be the factory fill, but hey, if the engineers are happy with it, I'm sure it'll be okay. After the first cold start, I immediately noticed that the piston slap would go away by the end of the driveway, rather than most of the way to my destination. I figured that was a good thing. Oil is slipperier when cold, does a better job lubricating when cold, engine has less wear on cold starts. Brilliant. One day, my friend told me that "all synthetics are the same" so long as they pass the same API certifications, etc. and you should just buy the cheapest one at the time. I found some oil from a company that starts with "valv" and ends with an "e", and it was the cheapest, so I got that. Piston slap came back. Mind you, it wasn't as bad as when I was using dinosaur oil, but it was definitely worse again. After a very short 3,000 miles, I switched back to this Castrol synthetic, and the engine doesn't slap at all when cold, the valves are quieter, it's just generally happy! This Castrol oil seems to like to "stick" to surfaces in the engine, so that even after a weekend sitting in the driveway, come a cold Monday morning, the oil will still be on the metal surfaces to lubricate it even during initial startup. I'll definitely be buying Castrol for a very long time. ... show more

  • Made me have one of those "wow" moments
Size: 5 Quart Style: Advanced Full Synthetic Configuration: 5W-20
I have 2005 Ford F-350 with the 5.4 Triton V-8. I bought the truck used with about 159K miles on it. It had a little bit of tick in the engine, but no biggie I thought. I changed the oil as soon as I got it with Pennzoil Platinum full synthetic 5W-20. Decent oil, but the tick didn't get better. May have gotten a a little worse actually. Kept the oil in there for about 1500 miles, and decided to try something else. Went with this Castrol Edge 5W-20 and K&N oil filter. I cranked the engine after changing the oil, and I was literally stunned at how quiet the engine was. NO tick AT ALL. I was flabber-gasted. Stunned, shocked, amazed, wow, blown away, etc. Whatever you want to call it. Ive always changed my own oil, but never really thought an oil could make that much difference. Well, I am a believer now, and will never switch to another oil in this truck. It has almost 161K miles on it, and it purrs like a brand new engine. Its unbelievable how this oil eliminated that tick. Your results may vary, but as for my 5.4 Triton, it LOVES this oil. And I am not one to write a review on just anything, but this was definitely worth taking the time to write one. Thank you Castrol for making such a great product. ... show more

  • Great Oil at a Great Price :)
Size: 5 Quart Style: Advanced Full Synthetic Configuration: 5W-30
Just switch from Mobile1 to Castrol Edge in my 08 Ranger. Forgot that the manual wanted 5w-20 but I fond this out in a forum. The main reason 5W-20 was specified for your engine is to increase the CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) reported to the Federal Government. CAFE is the combined average fuel economy of all of a vehicle manufacturers product line. Minimum CAFE levels are specified by the Federal Government. In order for a vehicle manufacturer to continue selling profitable large trucks and SUV's, which typically have poor fuel mileage ratings, as compared to smaller cars, and still meet mandated CAFE requirements, they must also sell enough of the smaller cars which have much better fuel economy ratings to offset the poor fuel economy ratings of the larger vehicles. For model year 2001, the change to a 5W-20 oil will allow Ford and Honda's overall CAFE to increase by a very small amount, typically in the tenths of a mile per gallon range. 5W-20 oil is a lighter viscosity than a 5W-30 oil and therefore has less internal engine frictional losses, or less drag on the crankshaft, pistons and valvetrain, which in turn promotes increased fuel economy. This increased fuel economy is virtually undetectable to the average motorist without the use of specialized engine monitoring and testing equipment under strictly controlled test track driving when compared to a 5W-30, 10W-30 or a 0W-30 viscosity motor oil. Since I got a good deal on the oil and have not noticed any difference I'll probably stick with Castrol. Honestly, they all spend millions of dollars testing and refining their oils. So I believe it is like sex, it is never bad unless you really mess it up! ... show more

  • Engine Smooth like Butter But Oil Burning Has Gone Up
Size: 5 Quart Style: High Mileage Configuration: 5W-30
I have used the blended version of High-mileage Castrol, but this one runs the engine much smoother than anything I've used so far. Regrettably, the oil burning has increased! Not decreased! And all that burnt oil might ruin the Catalytic Converter. So if you have a vehicle with regularly maintained engine with oil changes, then use this oil. But if you bought a used high mileage vehicle, and don't know its service history, and you encounter the dreaded oil consumption, than just get the conventional high mileage. This one will burn like crazy. ... show more
