  • My First G-Shock
Like I said, this is my first G-Shock. I chose this model for four, very specific reasons: 1) It is solar (I've loved solar watches since the 1980's) 2) It can sync itself to atomic time via radio communications. 3) It has a moon phase "complication" (this is a "thing" for me.) All watches I love have this complication. 4) It lets me track a second time zone easily and time in that zone on the face with the time in my home time zone. That all added up to the perfect storm for me. This is effectively a tool watch that gives me the ability to set the mechanical watches in my collection based on a known time source without needing to fire up a computer. And I admit, I finally caved to the idea that all good watch collections should contain at least one G-shock. Could I have bought one of the multi-K "G Master" series that rival the price of some mid-tier luxury watches? Sure. Except that the leave my soul feeling dead. They're just a quartz movement in a package of "bling". No, there is nothing "wrong" with quartz, unless you're asking me to pay more than a few hundred USD for it, once you cross that threshold, I'd rather have a good old fashioned mechanical movement inside all that bling. However, that's a different story and doesn't involve this watch. This watch is exceptional for that it does: 1) It syncs consistently with the atomic signal (read on for details) 2 I will likely never have to worry about batteries 3) I won't worry about it when I go fishing, it just won't need to be babied. I have read much foo about all the trouble people have getting Multiband 6 watches to sync. I'll say it again it's all foo. If you live within the theoretical range of one of the towers, forget the Apps, and all the other tricks. You can get your watch to sync consistently, every night with a "fix' that is effectively free. Credit for this goes to a guy on YouTube who goes by the name of "Watch Geek". He, as do I live near the edge of the effective range of one of the towers. He's in central Europe and I'm on the west coast of California (about 1,500 miles from the tower in Fort Collins Colorado.) My watch syncs nightly using Watch Geek's "trick", which is simply to fasten the watch around a metal object before you go to bed at night. He uses the cross bar on his bike or an exercise bar, I use a metal desk lamp. If I fasten the watch around the cross bar of the desk lamp, it syncs every night. If I just leave it laying on the desk in front of the lamp, I'm pretty much guaranteed to have an error message in the morning. Watch Geek's YouTube video covering this is called "DIY Amplifier for Atomic Radio Controlled watches that actually works & is VERY simple". Just search for his channel and find that video. I also read a bunch of foo about the "screws" on the face of this thing. If that bugs you, take the bezel off and add a drop of super glue to each one. I don't see those rivets coming out except under conditions that I'm not likely to survive, at which point I won't care. I read alot of foo about people getting the watch and having trouble getting charged. I suspect that these people are vampires and never went out in the sun. I got my watch with the charge indicator on H. As soon as it was out of the box, I was playing with it and admiring the light, and all the normal things an enthusiast does with a new watch. Within 24 hr, my H had degraded to an M. A couple hours in a sunny window fixed that without any thought on my part. It has not left H since then. I also heard alot of foo about how "huge" this watch is. Yes, it's a couple of millimeters taller than many diver's watches, but frankly if you can sense a millimeter or two, then you're too sensitive to be wearing a watch like this. The reality is that it wears smaller than many of the smaller divers I have. I attribute that to the "wings" under the strap and the way it fits the wrist. It's not big on the wrist (at least to me with a nearly 7" wrist) and it's certainly not heavy. There are a couple of cons. First, I find some of the smaller indicators hard to read when I first wake up and don't have my glasses on. I can still see the time, but the smaller details are hard under those conditions. Second, the light could be brighter. I'm glad this is backlit as if it was an LED shinning across the surface of the display, it would be unreadable. Third, I usually find myself pressing the light button several times as 3 seconds is not enough time for me to read the thing. All in all, I think my cons are nits. I'm happy I got it, and I likely will get a couple of the runner's up in the race to be my first G-shock as I'm pleasantly surprised by the functionality and style available in these watches, at least at the modest end of the range. I really do understand why there are G-Shock enthusiasts out there. ... show more

  • Great Watch.. full of features and easy to read. Great Watch.. full of features and easy to read.
A couple of notes first: 1, You'll see this watch (GW7900-1AL) also listed as the GW7900-1ER. (not sure why but they're the same watch. 2, You wont find a listing for this watch on the normal G shock site, but if you go to Casio.uk, you'll find it listed.. not sure why but maybe it's not an official US version.. 3, This is the same watch as the GW7900-1B, but with the normal face (black numbers on light background) instead of the grey numbers on black background.. and yes this version is MUCH easier to read than the blacked out version. I ordered the blacked out version and had a hard time reading the time except under the best of lighting conditions...Returned it and got this version and have loved it ever since.. OK.. now onto the review.... This watch for some reason does not seem as large as other "large" watches I have .. I think because its all black, it looks smaller on the wrist than other watches. Also, the wings under the strap keep the watch from rotating on your wrist so it doesn't feel bulky or heavy when you're wearing it. Overall its very comfortable. The layout is good, buttons are standard G shock and all work easily. The face is nicely laid out with both time and day and date visible (or you can switch the day-date to a second time zone if you prefer). The moon phase and tide graph show you the current condition of both and are easy to read and understand (the instruction manual goes into great details about them). Of course this watch has all the standard features, 5 alarms, stopwatch, countdown timer etc... What really makes this watch a great value for the $100 price tag is the Atomic time keeping feature and the Solar powered battery. Having these two features makes this a "fire and forget" watch.. set it and never have to adjust the time or replace the battery. My watch has no problem picking up an atomic signal every night around 2 am, and the time is perfectly in sync with my cell phone time. The Solar powered battery so far has been great. The watch arrived with the power meter in the medium charge range.. I decided to give it a boost overnight by setting it directly under an LED desk lamp with the bulb about 2" away from the face of the watch.. Sure enough by morning the meter was showing High charge and hasn't moved since. The manual goes into great detail about how the solar panel charges the battery and regarding how long it takes to charge it under different lighting conditions. Note.. the solar charger is not a fast charging system.. It's designed to basically keep the battery full if it's out in direct sunlight for a certain time period daily.. Incandescents and flourescent lights are all but useless to charge the battery..(READ the instruction manual so you won't think the solar charge feature isn't working). The only issues I've had with this watch so far are: 1, Having hairy arms (like a gorilla), I've found my hairs getting caught between the band and the wings under the band. This isn't a big deal, but if your hairy and adjust the watch on your wrist..you'll notice it. 2. The Automatic Light Feature... when I first got the watch I could not get the automatic light feature to function.. up to the point I almost sent the watch back for an exchange. I tried and tried and only saw the light come on once or twice in the first hundred tries... (and yes I followed the instructions on how to properly do it.), but just had no luck. Well. after about the second day of wearing this watch, the Auto light featured seem to start working a bit more regularly, and now after a week, it's working just fine. I'm not sure why but it seems to have "broken in" and now works just about every time I try it. (UPDATE) 6 month review.. This watch is looking and working fantastic after half a year of daily wear. (see image showing June date).. There are no scratches in the glass, nor wear on the bezel, and everything is tight. The atomic timing feature has been spot on, and the solar power has stayed in the high zone since day two.. (im only outside about an hour a day, most days). Highly recommend this watch... ... show more

  • Very tough! Heavy duty G-Shock with solar atomic feature. Very tough! Heavy duty G-Shock with solar atomic feature.
This is a very rugged watch that works and looks great. The case is thicker than what I am accustomed to in a G-Shock. I think it is built to 16.4mm to protect the watch and possibly allow for a larger battery. It took me some time to get used to it. It took almost a full day attached to my SUV's cargo rail in the Florida sun to reach the "H" high power charged status. It has stayed in the "H" high power since the initial charge. It has several nice features that are very useful. The instructions on the included small but thick manual are easy to understand so setup is very easy. My favorite feature is the atomic calibration that happens every night. This is automatic and keeps the watch extremely accurate. You can even manually set the watch to synchronize by pressing 2 buttons. I live in North Florida and have no issues getting a strong signal to synchronize. Another feature is the 600+ feet water rating. I have no concerns about leaving my watch on if I go swimming at the beach. Another nice feature is the Auto illumination. Once set, you only need to roll your wrist and the screen lights up. I have not set the tide or the moon phase yet but I am sure this too will be very simple to set. I have the hourly chime turned on. The alarms and chimes are not loud and need a little more volume to be effective. I liked this watch so much, I purchased the blackout version also (GW 7900B). I also replaced the resin band with a Casio rubber/polyurethane band. The rubber watch band is softer and makes the watch comfortable to wear all the time. A company also sells a $23.00 LED solar charging light. If you go to Autozone you can get something that works just as well for $4.00. I use rechargeable batteries and an hour at most is all you will need. The light is in the pictures. Edit- I added pictures for case height comparison. One is the Suunto Core and the other is an iWatch. I hope this review was helpful! ... show more

  • Classic G-Shock Classic G-Shock
This Casio GW7900-1 so far has been great as I'd hoped. I bought the "Used like new" and while I can tell that whoever had it before probably waited to the very end of the return policy to return it due to I can see some indication of the inside band being not quite cleaned back to "as new" condition, the watch face and everything else about the watch seems to be in excellent condition. No visible scratches. I'd also like to note that this watch is a tie with my Protrek PRW-35 in terms of reliability receiving multiband 6 updates on the east coast USA. Both of these routinely update more regularly than my other G-Shocks I own. This fits more comfortable than I expected and looks like what you expect a G-Shock to look like. The beep tones are not too quiet like the GWM5610U. Overall, I don't regret the purchase and this is one I can comfortably wear and not think about damaging. Cons: Well the green backlight is not quite as bright as the newer LCD imo which is somewhat harder to read for my aging eyes, but it's quite retro and cool. A great daily wear "beater" watch if you will. If you are considering this for your casio collection, I'd say go ahead and pull the trigger. It's a great addition! ... show more

This is a nice watch and with all the usual positive attributes of a G-Shock. However this model is now new-old stock, they haven't made these for many years, which means you may be on the hook for a new battery. Batteries are CTL1616, not cheap, twenty bucks or so. My watch arrived totally dead, and a day in the sun got it up to "medium". It takes two full days of bright sunshine to fill from empty. It no longer holds charge like a new battery - because it is a 10 year old battery. You can change the battery yourself, but there are significant precautions you should observe according to Battery Bob. The batteries cannot be touched, you must use plastic tweezers etc. This makes me more likely to replace it myself, as many watch counter clerks will have no idea of the correct way to do this, and it sounds a lot easier than it is. The non-rechargeable CR1616 will fit, are very cheap, and last a year or so, but they will destroy your solar charging circuit (or worse) if you put one in. So the solar charging works fine, as does the radio reception, which is not *quite* as good as my other 3 receivers (2 proteks and a more recent G-Shock). This watch missed the first night, which my other watches had no trouble with, but sync'd on the second night. Of the remaining features, I am not able to get the auto-light to turn on with a flick of the wrist. However I am a Casio fanboy, and despite the age and issues, I kept this one. You will see this particular model on sale for an attractive price ... but again not such a good price if you figure in the battery. EDIT: The battery is doing better than I expected, and satisfactorily holds its charge. My remaining criticisms are: a really tatty, beaten-up and taped-together box that looks like it has sat in a warehouse for years, and the auto-backlight still does not work. I'm still hopeful that the mechanical sensor will eventually shake free and start working. ... show more

  • The G-Shock for Me! The G-Shock for Me!
I have a couple nice dive watches, but have been looking for a watch to accompany me on weekends spent surfing, paddling, spear fishing, doing yard work and other fun things like that. Given the beating these activities tend to inflict on my stuff, I homed in on G-Shocks and quickly determined this was the best suited model for me, especially with its solar charging, atomic time setting and tide/lunar tracking. When the price dropped below $90 on Amazon, I stopped looking, bought it and couldn’t be happier! For a watch that hovers around $100, I can’t believe the value. You get solar power, atomic radio controlled time settings, tide/moon tracking and world time as well as all the other typical G-Shock offerings (best in class toughness, stopwatch/countdown timers, 200m WR, 12hr/24hr, auto backlighting, etc...) all in a large (but not obnoxiously so) and nice looking comfortable watch (it sits tall, but is well centered and comfy because of the “wings” under the band). I chose the the positive display model over its more popular negative display brother for the much easier visibility. The negative display is super cool and tactical looking - if you’re planning on conducting a seaborne nighttime assault on a coastal fortification, the negative display is the way to go. If you’re just going to surf with it like me and need it very readable in all light conditions, I’d say stick with the positive display. I checked the batch # date code when I first got the watch and indicated it was manufactured on 9/23/19 (“...266I“). However, the power was completely drained and the LCD was blank from having been in a dark box for about 10 months. After a couple hours of late afternoon light, it charged up through CHG and L to M. The second day, I left it in the California sun all day and it reached H, but dropped down to M again later that evening. So, I put it out again all day the third day and it reached H again and hasn’t left that since. Likewise, I set the home time and the clock has set itself without fail every night. I adjust the tide using the internet the days I wear the watch and I’ve found it surprisingly accurate so good on Casio for that! I’m a couple weeks in on owing the watch and so far so good. I subjected it to some rough yard work and none of the screws have fallen out. It also has survived a couple showers and a very wet dog washing - I have confidence it’ll handle a good surf session, but I haven’t had a chance to get out in the waves yet so time will tell on that. The only thing I think keeping this from being the ultimate beach going watch is the lack of a sunrise/sunset reading like you find on a lot of Pro Treks, but still very much a 5 star watch. All in all, if you like the look of the watch and it has the features you’re looking for, I think you can’t go wrong buying it through a respectable seller like Amazon. Hope this was helpful and see you at the beach! ... show more

  • Great watch.
This is a very attractive watch. It is solar powered and has atomic time. In addition, it has tide data and a moon phase display along with world time, multiple alarms, a stopwatch, and a countdown timer. I bought this because my analog Citizen watch (also solar and atomic) is a bit difficult to read at a glance and I thought this one would be better. The LCD is pretty small on this, so it is not as readable as I expected--which is my aging eye's fault. The volume level of the alarm could be louder. Although I prefer the look of an analog watch, I do like this one and find myself wearing it on a regular basis. ... show more

GW 7900 is timeless in my opinion but what G Shock or Casio watch isn’t! I have to admit I was surprised it fit so nicely on my wrist. Definitely comfortable and the price was great. I watched several reviews on the watch prior to purchase. Totally ease to navigate. The background light is sufficient. For sure a quality watch! Looks more bulky on camera than in person.
