  • Excellent lightweight Alaskan style mill. Excellent lightweight Alaskan style mill.
Size: 14" to 36"
I bought this mill to make lumber for wood shop projects. The local store doesn’t sell slabs of sufficient thickness for what I want to do so I wanted to make my own. This mill does the job perfectly. I have it mounted to my Stihl 461 with a 32” bar. I bought a ripping chain for milling and highly recommended that you do so as well. A standard chain should have a cutter angle of around 30° where the ripping chain has a cutter angle of only 10°. It is also sharpened with a special flat/angled file instead of a round file. It is made for milling and should not be used for general cutting. There are no step by step instructions for assembly, but it comes with a schematic that shows how to put it together. It took me about half an hour. Mounting it on the saw is pretty strait forward. Just make sure you clamp it where the sprocket/tip meets the bar, not on the sprocket rivets. Doing so will compress the tip and not allow the sprocket in the tip to spin freely, ruining your bar which can get expensive. I get about 25" of useable bar with the 32" bar. I could probably get another inch if I were to take the dogs off the powerhead but that’s a lot of work for minimal benefit. When milling, go slow and make sure you support the slab with wedges or shims to keep the weight of the slab off the bar. Let the saw do the work and don’t rush it. For the first cut, I made a rail out of some 1x4 and scrap 2x4 pieces. I secure this to the log with screws on the bigger end first and measure to my intended line which I draw with a level on the log end. On the smaller end I shim up the rail to a similar line the opposite log end. I then set the mill for that thickness and make my first cut. For subsequent cuts the mill rests right on the previous cut without the rail. There are videos on YouTube showing how this works. Overall, I am happy with this little mill. It makes accurate cuts of any thickness. I was surprised at the weight. It is very light and easy to use. If you’re wanting to mill your own lumber I highly recommend this mill. ... show more

  • good with a few mods
Size: 14" to 36"
I new going in the issues so it worked well. I didn't even try and use the clamping mechanism to hold the bar in place drilled through the bar and used the holes in the mill that were designed for that. They mention that in the instructions like you wont need to do that but good luck if you don't. I also cut 2 maple square pins that I put in the bar that slides up and down. There were some reviews of the clamping mechanism crushing the guide bar I can see that happening with the wood inside you can tighten the bolts much tighter with no fear. I dont see why it wont hold up long term. ... show more

  • Not a bad little mill, but be mindful of a couple of things ...
Size: 14" to 48"
We've used this mill quite a bit since we received it, pairing it up with a Stihl 661 with a 36" bar. It works fine, and is worth the $ so far as we are concerned, but we found two things that you need to be mindful of: 1) the two little wingnuts that hold the horizontal bar on have a tendency to vibrate loose frequently. This can be dangerous if they were to fall off entirely and come into contact with the chain when the saw is in operation, so check them often, and tighten them mechanically (as opposed to hand tightening). 2) as others have stated, the dimensions stamped on the mill for slab thickness are not accurate. This isn't a big deal to us because we always double-check measurements before cutting anything. We found that the easiest way to remedy the problem is to have two small pieces of wood handy which represent whatever thickness we intend to mill. We just insert one on each side of the mill, slide the upper portion down to rest on our "gauge blocks", and then tighten. Works like a charm, and you don't have to try and eyeball a tape measure. The seller is also very responsive - we had an issue with the nose guard bracket breaking, and they immediately responded to our inquiry and agreed to send a replacement at no charge, even though we explained that we felt as though the issue may have been our fault. Overall, we've very happy with our purchase! ... show more

  • Looks to be a good value
Size: 14" to 36"
The product arrived on time and was well packaged. The instructions were a little hanky but if you don’t rush easy enough to get through. I am going to have to get a bigger saw however because the one I currently have is 18 inches and once I have it mounted I only have a little over 11 inches of clearance for cutting, so keep that in mind if you’re planning on buying this. You will lose several inches of cutting length once this is attached to your saw.It seems easy to set up and went together well enough. I haven’t used it yet but plan to soon. Maybe I’ll update my review once I do. Seems like a good product for the price. Okay now that I’ve used it a couple times I will say that it works well. Only issue that I am seeing for now is where it mounts at the end of the bar tends to move a little and will get into your chain if you aren’t careful. One thing is I was probably pushing a little too much while using. A quick tip, if you can put one end of your log up on something, get your saw started and just let gravity and the saw get through the cut it goes much easier. ... show more

  • Good, bad, ugly Good, bad, ugly
Size: 14" to 48"
Ugly = 1st time using V clamp for U-bolt on one side split/cracked in half with very little force applied to nuts. Currently trying to figure out how to get this one piece replaced by seller without having to return the whole item. Bad = The steel square tubing that is the support for the bar clamps as well as the thickness adjustment indents easily when applying the necessary, clamping force to overcome movement due to the vibrations of the chainsaw/cutting. The smallest nuts and Phillips head bolts provide good clamping force on the end to end round pole alignment support however the nuts strip easily with the provided 8 mm wrench and I would’ve preferred something other than Phillips head as well. Good = almost all of the hardware seems to be much better quality than a previous chainsaw mill that I’ve used and all seems to be straight and aligns well. I like that there is plenty of room to get a socket onto coupling nuts when adjusting thickness of cut as another mill I’ve used did not have the same room. I also like the black handle stays put and does not slip off as well as has a hole on top for storing a tool. I also like to see that it seems the bar clamps provide straight alignment, and I also like the option of being able to drill the bar and bolt the clamp to the bar. ... show more

  • Works great, once you decipher the instructions
Size: 36"+9FT
First, my kit was missing hardware for assembly, but they quickly sent out replacement parts, so A+ for their communication and fulfillment. Now to the actual product. I have had no issues with the operation. I've finally been able to process a bunch of maple I've had for forever I to planks. Can't wait to use them. The weight is manageable, not too heavy or light. Both the guide rails and push kit are very adjustable. I like it, but it does need careful attention during the assembly step. It is not the most intuitive or straightforward, so have patience while putting it together. Look at the pictures carefully. Expect to have to take it apart at times because the instructions weren't clear. ... show more

  • Not bad at all
Size: 36"+9FT
Lots of comments about the instructions, and they are not fantastic, but if you can't get it together you might want to reconsider using a chainsaw. Seems good for the price, I am sure there are higher quality, but for a cheap basic unit, seems fine

  • Paid for itself already
Size: 14" to 36"
Yes, it's a little difficult to assemble. The instructions aren't as good as they should be. It took the better part of a Saturday just to get everything assembled and configured correctly and then get a good cut. But now that it's all dialed in, it works great with minimal adjustments. So far I've cut 9 beautiful 2X10X10 boards out of two logs, and that means this mill has over paid for itself. I'm definitely happy with it. There are some negatives though. 1. It takes a LOT longer than I expected. It cuts slow, even with a rip chain. It's enjoyable, and so satisfying to offload that finished board after a cut. But it will take 10-15 minutes per slice, depending on the size of the log. 2. Mine came with a cross-threaded U-bolt. Obviously I was sent a 'returned' item. I had to go to the hardware store and get a new one. Because of that it's now way more difficult to make thickness adjustments. I'm not very happy about that. 3. The curved nose-guard didn't fit. With that installed, the contraption wouldn't clamp tight to my bar. I left it off, and everything is fine. Just a design flaw, I guess. 4. I don't like that I can't adjust my chain tension without completely removing this device. It messes up the thickness settings and it's just a pain. You can't really remove it from the saw without resetting your thickness. 5. You need a tool to make ANY/ALL adjustments. It's a standard chainsaw tool. But still, I wish they were wing-nuts that could be adjusted by hand. Otherwise... it works great. And for the money, I'm willing to put up with these issues. (for now) ... show more
