  • Love the concept
I really like having a lithium battery back driven camera strobe. This reminds me of my old Metz strobe from the days of shooting medium format in terms of power; but with a fraction of the weight and 50 times the capability. The light works great as a slave flash using the radio trigger or another flash. It produces a really even light that makes photos come out really well illuminated. Definitely great for both quantity and quality. I have not shot an event yet - just some portrait work, but for what I have photographed with the speedlite, it has done well. Battery life isn't awesome; but for the amount of light output and quality of light, it is pretty decent. It is WAY better than 4 AA batteries. The price of the battery isn't great - way too pricy. I was able to buy an affordable aftermarket battery. It works like a Canon battery, but the life isn't as great. What I like best is that I can hook it up to an auxiliary battery back and give it a huge boost in recycle performance and battery life. If only Canon offered an auxiliary pack that used two of the batteries that you could carry on your belt or connect to a light stand. Then you could shoot an entire event and perhaps several sessions without needing to charge the pack. Price point is really on the high side. I waited until it came down to $900; but I feel like this is better priced at $699, not $899. Granted, it has lot of features, but I think Canon is just taking advantage of the exclusive nature of the product and they are probably dealing with inflation. Once components and labor markets settle, perhaps they can offer this product at a lower cost - then I would replace most of my speedlites with this model. It is bulky in size - but worth it for the light it produces. It might feel really awkward on a mirrorless camera body - but on a DSLR body, like my 5DM4, it feels good. Overall - it is a great new product by Canon. Price of the flash and batteries is still a tad high, but the technology and having the lithium battery pack is awesome! ... show more

  • Beast Mode Event Flash
I took the plunge and purchased this flash as an upgrade to the 600EXII-RT. 1st use was at a 6 hour event that included outdoor and indoor locations with varying lighting. I was thoroughly impressed at how the flash could easily keep up with 12 fps and maintain the same light levels. Never did the flash have to stop and cool down. This outperforms the 600 quite handily. Battery life was also great. I took around 600 flash photos (not all at full power), and I still have 4 bars on the battery indicator. E-TTL II works wonderfully, applying just the perfect amount of flash, even as fill-flash for backlit scenes. The flash is very robust as well, and I can rest assured a spilled drink or light rain won't hurt it. Overall, I'm very pleased with this high-end flash! Almost forgot to mention I used the modeling lamp as a video light, too. Although not designed for this, I was able to light a single subject on the dancefloor quite well. ... show more

  • It's pretty much as expected.
I have a 600 exrt to compare this to and wow this thing is massive. Makes a lot of sense though. It definitely feels well built though for sure. Not having to carry around double A batteries now is nice. My only complaint is just the price point for the EL-1. The spare batteries and the actual EL-1 itself I would not say was worth the expensive $1100 price point. Everything else though feels amazing to use. Edit March 3 2022: I actually just came back to this post to give a more thorough opinion. I still hold that I think this is overpriced, but after actually putting it through it's paces I do have to say I do not think I could go back to a 600 exrt ii. This thing is absolutely incredible. It's extremely consistent. Never missed a shot. I actually had this paired with both a R5 and R6. I recently got my hands on the R3 and to be completley honest this thing feels like it was made for the R3 after using it. The combo is absolutely ridiculous. It kept up with 12fps on my R5 and R6. When I use the 15 from the electronic shutter on the R3 with flash sync it keeps up perfectly. It seems a lot of scenarios I've done I can just hold the shutter down and it will repeatedly fire in a dimly lit room at anything above about 400 iso. Settings that I was using was 400 iso, 180 shutter (electronic sync speed limitation), and at 2.8. This is all on ETTL of course. When I increase my aperture to about f4 it will still go for a decent bit, but that will cause it to skip flashes between shots. About 1250 iso it will just keep chugging along again in my personal use case. The flash does seem to start getting warm in those scenarios after about 10 minutes and that will cause it to skip shots again on my R3. I honestly can't really tell much of a difference between using the EL-1 by itself and with the CPE4N Canon battery pack with the batteries it recommends for the best recycle times. Really all in all it's an expensive flash for sure, but it's good quality if that was anyone's worry. ... show more
