Description

Perfect for wildlife, sports, travel and more, the RF100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM is a compact, lightweight telephoto lens for EOS R Series cameras, offering a versatile zoom range that brings subjects closer with ease. The RF100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM is similar in size to the EF 70-300mm F4.5-5.6 IS II USM lens, but not only reaches to 400mm, but also has fast Nano USM focusing and up to 6 stops of Coordinated IS when used in combination with an EOS R series camera featuring In-body Image Stabilization like the EOS R5 and EOS R6, or 5.5 stops with an EOS R/RP camera. Using a single Ultra Low Dispersion lens element towards the front of the lens group corrects chromatic aberration throughout the entire zoom range, making your images look crisp and colorful with minimal color blur. The RF100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM lens can also accept both the RF1.4x and RF2x tele extenders giving you the effective maximum focal length of 560mm and 800mm respectively. With a control ring that allows for quick setting changes, including shutter speed and aperture, the RF100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM lens puts quality, convenience and control in your hands.

  • Great Value
Style: Lens Only
I am a professional photographer, but didn't really "need" this lens for my daily work. I was just enjoying photographing birds and this was a "cheap-by-lens-standards" impulse buy. The lens surprised me, and I've been impressed by it. I was worried about f/8 at the long end, but the compression at 400mm still allows for the semi-shallow focus look. It's harder to get a great image when the light is low, and performs best on a sunny day. I've paired it with a Canon R5, so at least the sensor does well at a higher ISO. At first I thought the AF was a little sluggish, but I think it might've been my own user error, had good luck with eye AF settings, able to grab focus on little, erratic birds. The lens is SUPER light, which I love. The lack of weather sealing worries me, I live in Hawaii-it is humid- but I toss it in a dehumidifier box after a misty day. If I continue with bird photography and actually sell images I'd probably invest in the 100-500, but for now, this is a great lens to play with. ... show more

  • Great lens for high school track / field and daytime soccer!
Style: Lens Only
Who/ What: I paired this with my R10 and am now barely out of the newb phase (bought 10 months ago). I bought this lens primarily to shoot my kids in track, soccer and X country meets and this lens has been great for those sports. Where: I'm shooting primarily outdoors in fields or on tracks (Hayward field once). Interestingly, I found that cloudy conditions were OK to shoot with this lens.... When I've tried to shoot practices under flourescent lights I saw some struggles with the auto focusing. When: The sports I'm shooting are generally in the day time, so the auto-zoom and tracking are spot on. I was able to consistently record and take pictures of my son throughout the track without any problems! I would have to switch to manual focus if there were many kids passing by in front of the lens, but the lens still handled that easily. Handles 15 image burst-shots with no problems (like taking pictures of the boys coming off the starting blocks), amazing pictures! When trying to shoot Soccer at dusk under lights, I had issues with the auto focusing and the light in the pictures, so I had to switch to the 70-200 in those cases. Why: So for being my first telephoto lens ever, I was very fortunate to have this lens without having to give up a kidney. I have since bought a 24-105 variable aperture and a 70-200 f4. The focusing on the 100-400 is faster than my 24-105 and yes the 70-200 is a GREAT lens at f4, but when I need to get the extra details on the other side of the track, I still need the reach of the 100-400 to get those shots. I highly recommend this lens! The only caveat is to expect diminishing performance as the sun starts to go down. ... show more

  • Affordable nature lens
Style: Lens Only
My kit consists of the RF 35mm Macro and this RF 100-400mm these days. Light for hiking out to locations and covers landscape, macro, and zoom. The weight of this 100-400mm lens is tough to beat. I have no trouble carrying the camera on a strap with this lens attached, and handheld shots don't stress me out. Get a beanbag for support if you need it. When my pictures aren't crisp with this lens, it's because I didn't set or do something right, not because of the lens. I've had some sharp images with it so I know it's capable. As others have pointed out, it'll perform best outdoors with adequate light. Don't really want 400mm inside anyway, do ya? Nah, get out there and wear green and brown and snap some shots of the little birdies. ... show more

  • Great lens for birding
Style: Lens Only
Great lens for wildlife and action photography. Pictures are great during the daytime and the zoom allows you to capture great detail from a distance. The one drawback is that it isn’t great in low light.

  • High image quality when there's enough light
Style: Lens Only
This lens is sharp for the money, but it needs plenty of light (think morning through afternoon use). The max aperture of f/8 at 400mm makes it very hard to use or even focus in the evening. It's also very lightweight. Although a full-frame RF lens, it works even better on a cropped-sensor camera (because only the center portion of the projected image, which is usually the sharpest portion, is used on a cropped-sensor). Therefore, it pairs very well with the RF-S 18-150mm and a cropped-sensor like the EOS R10 for a very light and compact setup. ... show more

  • Zooms in faraway!
Style: Lens Only
I love this lens. I was in Zurich taking many photos of statues and figurines in very high far off buildings. These are statues noticeable only in detail by a lens of this nature. This lens is worth investing.
