  • The Best of the Call of Duty Franchise
With 'Black Ops' having been released this past November and becoming the highest-selling Call of Duty game in the franchise, what made me turn the clock backwards and play 'World at War'? The answer is simple: balanced gameplay. There is no doubt that the peak point of any Call of Duty game from 'Modern Warfare' and beyond is its incredible multiplayer. Well... "incredible" applying to really only 'Modern Warfare' and 'World at War'. 'Modern Warfare 2's' multiplayer took what had been established by its predecessors, tried to expand it beyond a scope of reasonable means, and ended up failing miserably creating one of the most broken multiplayer experiences of any contemporary game. 'Black Ops' fared much better, bringing more balance to the gameplay (initially) and well-designed multiplayer maps as well as probably the best campaign storyline in Call of Duty's history. The problem with 'Black Ops' was how stale gameplay became after only a few months of playtime. Treyarch exaggerated the customization of your character and, while what you can customize is innovative, it gets boring when you can simply buy everything at a low cost. 'Black Ops' currency system was an attempt to force the player to work and literally "pay" for what they wanted in their load out. The problem arose, however, that once you obtained your "Superman class" (i.e. every perk, weapon, accessories, etc. you wanted), there was little incentive to continue playing the game, and this was the point at which I sold 'Black Ops'. I ended up reverting all the way back to 'Call of Duty 4', which remains to be an excellent, innovative, challenging, and fair game to this day. But what about 'World at War'? Its status being fallen into the shadow of its big brother, CoD 4, takes away from the appreciation and respect the game deserves. With a dark setting, no humour, an entirely serious tone, an intense campaign storyline, and being the goriest of all the Call of Duty games - 'World at War' stands out amongst the quickly growing crowd of its brother and sister games. I cannot praise the storyline and single player campaign enough and, whilst I admitted that 'Black Ops' has the #1 superior campaign of all Call of Duty games, 'World at War's' comes in a very, very close second. Also of utmost importance to me (and most other players), the multiplayer is everything that it should be: 1) Fun 2) Balanced 3) Fair 4) Exciting While some in the list could be construed into the same thing, these are the four adjectives that come to my mind when thinking of 'World at War's' multiplayer. Some may disagree and exclaim that the MP40 submachine gun is imbalanced, and they are fine to think that way (personally, I find the rifles and bolt-action weapons to be more devastating than any SMG). For me, however, 'World at War' delivers the joy I felt when I played 'Call of Duty 4's' multiplayer for the first time, and *thensome*. I also originate my war-themed, first-person shooter history in 'Medal of Honor: Allied Assault' for the PC - naturally, there exists a great appreciation and appeal towards WWII-era shooters for me. In sum, 'World at War' gets a "check +" in every category and I am truly impressed with this addition to the currently dismantled 'Call of Duty' franchise steering itself into mediocre and broken oblivion. I would highly recommend this game to anyone who likes first-person shooters, is sick of 'Modern Warfare 2' and/or 'Black Ops', and enjoys balanced multiplayer gameplay. ... show more

  • Not too bad for $20
I'm not going to get into all of the details of this game as there are a ton of resources out there outlining the campaign and online modes but if you want a cheap first-person shooter for the DS, this is a good choice. Overall the graphics look pretty good on the DSi XL that I play this game on and there are times where it is kinda hard to see your enemies but if you shoot enough rounds in that general direction, you eventually drop them. I think the campaign mode took me around 20 hours or so to beat and I had the difficulty turned way down so it would be easier. This game has some fun vs. modes and online play that you can use and I was very impressed with the sound of the weapons and the detailing of the backgrounds to all of the game play. There will always be games out there with better graphics than what you have but you don't have a lot of options when it comes to FPS on the DSi so I figured I would give this game a chance and I did not walk away disappointed. The only thing that I have noticed is that sometimes it seems like I have to empty and entire magazine of rounds in an enemy to drop him and at certain points of the game it feels like a mindless carnival shoot-em-up but it is still fun. Also, the controls can be a bit tricky. You use the L/R buttons to fire and your D-pad to walk forward, backward, left and right. To look around, you use the cursor on the touch screen which can leave the DSi a bit lop-sided in your hands, depending how you sit when you play. I usually prop my XL on a couch pillow to keep it up and balance the XL in my left hand to keep it steady. I know it sounds unusual to get instructions like this but when you are talking about a game that you will play for hours at a time, you need to be comfortable. The reason why I traded in my DS Lite for the XL was because the Lite didn't fit my hands and would leave my thumbs aching about 30 minutes of play time, regardless how I held the lite, the DS XL fits me much better (but the XL is a different review altogether that I have posted). Anyway, if you buy this game expecting nothing more than a fun shoot-em-up with average graphics, you will be satisfied. ... show more

  • Another Great CoD game
Not sure why yet another CoD game gets such bad reviews. Seems to be a reoccurring theme of multi-player hackers, PC issues (whether it be install or underpowered PC), or just hater unwilling to let minor details go. I mainly play solo campaigns so I can't say much about multi-player. If you have played a CoD game before, you will instantly be familiar with the layout of this game. Cut scene, dropped in the middle of the action, get to destination or knock out the enemy tanks, towers defense. The game itself is good. Graphics are what you would expect, especially since it was release after CoD4: MW which had pretty good graphics. I run the game maxed out and in my opinion, I think they did a great job with textures and lighting. I will say that the AI (team members or enemies) are hit or miss sometimes. Some instances they are down right vicious while other times, they are dumb as a sack of rocks. Overall though, the game is pretty consistent. I haven't had any issues where the campaign is stuck in limbo (happened a lot with Call of Duty 2 - I'd just have to restart the mission but that gets tiring after a while). I had no issues installing the game. I am running a Dell XPS 8700, Core i7, GTX 760, 24gb RAM, Win7 Pro. Clearly it is overkill for the game. It does try to install Punkbuster, which you can opt out of. Each time you run the game, it will tell you that Punkbuster is not enabled blah blah blah. Just click OK and move on. I haven't had any issues with blue screens, freezing or the game closing out. The game runs without the use of third party DRM software such as Steam or Origins. If you like the CoD franchise and like World War themed shooters, I highly recommend this game. ... show more
