  • Engaging cozy....
The setting is before WWII....Hitler is causing concern. In LA there are 2 stars....1 in the news, Veronica, for marrying a Duke & heading to England, the other, Cora, has been a 'child' star in a girl detective series....she's aged-out of her role & been fired. The 2 were paired up because the studio hoped Cora, the good girl, could influence Veronica to tone down her behavior. Veronica convinces Cora to go w/her on the trip to England to meet the Duke & family for Christmas. Cora goes, there's a lot of discord in the family. The Duke & family aren't impressed with the notoriety the movie star has brought to their family. They'd hoped he'd marry a neighbor, Lady Audrey. After the 1st dinner, the Duke is found dead, having been crushed by a chandelier (or was he)? A photographer that Cora had seen by Veronica's front door shows up in a blizzard shortly after the Duke's accident. Turns out the Duke had hired a PI to gather dirt on Veronica. And, a maid, Gladys, is found dead, stuffed in Cora's Cora's bedroom fireplace. And, she almost dies while investigating. There are several key characters in the book. There's the Duke & his wife (is she having an affair w/an Italian visiting the home), the 1st born son & his wheel-chair bound wife....he was born on 'the wrong side of the blanket' & can't inherit. Edmund, the 2nd born son is due to inherit. Did someone kill the Duke to make sure he didn't make any changes to will? Cora figures out how the murder was staged but she's off on who did it....which is why she comes close to losing her life. It all works out in the end & Cora is given a little dog because it's owner is returning to his country & feels the dog will be safer w/Cora. I enjoyed the book & see that the 2nd book will involve Cora going to visit her Great Aunt in Sussex. I see another mystery coming up. Or, will she return to LA, now that she's gotten a LOT of publicity, the movie studio wants her back! ... show more

  • A light read
The comparison with an Agatha Christie mystery is easily made, but don’t do that. Just see this as a light, fun read. But don’t compare it to the Queen. I liked it. I liked that British vibe, that pre-WWII feel. The mystery was interesting. Prepare yourself for some loose ends though. I will be reading book 2, to see what happens next. ... show more

  • Entertaining but...
Good for some mild entertainment. An interesting mystery, but as others have mentioned, some aspects are a bit much. She meets the night time stranger and is immediately besotted? But for the right price, it's amusing entertainment.

  • What an enjoyable story about murder!
I found the book well written and very intriguing. I was wrapped around the characters so much, I could swear we were long lost friends and Cora, Veronica, And I were the scorned Americans. I loved the descriptions of the scenery, I swear I could see every place they went in my mind. Oh, yes can't forget the murder, the integrations, and all the suspicions. It was the suspense that actually kept me awake enough to finish this book. Wonderful 👍 ... show more

  • 3.5 stars
3.5 stars I was hooked in the beginning and middle, but towards the end it got kind of cheesy and unbelievable. I just didn't buy it. BUT she kept me guessing until the moment you find out who the murderer was. It kept me interested for most of the book and I read it in a day and now I'm on to read the next in the series. ... show more

  • It's okay....
...but one might expect a little more character development in the first of a series. We get to know very little about Cora Clarke, our heroine, other than she was the Gal Detective in the series of movies named such and she was a child actress. I just couldn't care much about her or any of the characters. The dialogue seemed stilted and there was much verbal exposition toward the end. The story is complete so that's a positive. I probably won't read any more in this series, though, despite the setting in England and the 1930s time period, both of which I find interesting. It's a quick read. ... show more

  • Wonderful story.....
Calamity under the Chandelier (A Sleuthing Starlet Mystery Book 1) By Camilla Blythe 5 out of 5 stars I loved reading the book Calamity under the Chandelier (A Sleuthing Starlet Mystery Book 1) by Camilla Blythe. It is a mystery novel that hooked me in from the beginning. I loved reading about the character of Cora Clarke. She follows her best friend and fellow actress to England and ends up in the middle of a mystery. When someone is killed and her friend becomes a suspect, Cora becomes determined to find out who the murderer is. Read this book to find out the full story and if Cora is successful in her search. This is a book that had me guessing all the way through. There are twists that I didn’t see coming. I found myself turning pages wondering what was going to happen next. The tension is high, and the suspicions run deep. The body count rises. Don’t miss out on an entertaining story that will have you reading far into the night. I would highly recommend reading this book. ... show more

  • Awkward
The characters were well drawn and interesting, but the book didn’t have much spark. Not a book you would stay up at night to finish. Do the British aristocracy really have chandeliers in their bedrooms? And would a Czech/English duchess know the American term “high school?” Lots of little things which distract and annoy. ... show more
