  • Crash, learn, repeat. Perfect beginner FPV kit.
The media could not be loaded. - Great entry-level FPV kit for learning without breaking the bank If you're getting into FPV and want a self-contained kit that won't shrink your wallet when you inevitably crash, this is it. I fly drones as a hobby but mainly camera drones, so FPV was very scary and confusing at first. Having this kit is great because I know if I screw up, I can just pick it up and try again. It won't hurt anyone - it's just too small. - The Remote Controller The remote works with PC simulators, which is huge for beginners. There's a free LiftOff drone model so you can practice before flying for real. It would be nice if they bundled a lite version of some simulator software, but hey, free works. I highly recommend spending time in a simulator before you take this thing outside. Trust me on this one. Oh, calibrate the jobsticks first. - The Goggles: The goggles looked small and I was worried since I have a big head, but I had no issues seeing the screen. Here's my situation though - I'm getting older and can't see things up close well. There's no lens adjustment built in, which would be nice even for an entry-level kit. The screen is actually viewed through a mirror system inside. My workaround? I just increased the distance between my eyes and the screen by putting some padding foam in between, and now it's crystal clear. They do sell customizable lenses for about $30, but my DIY fix works fine and I'm trying to keep costs down. The goggles will fit with glasses, but I just don't want to wear glasses with any goggles - personal preference. For the price point, I get it, but any simple lens adjustment mechanism would help a lot of people. On the bright side, Caddx just announced they'll have goggles supporting both X and L series. I think that's a good upgrade path for later, but we'll see how that plays out. - The Quad: This little guy is tough. I've crashed and dropped it so many times I've lost count, and it still looks okay. They include extra propellers which is thoughtful, but honestly the base frame will probably crack before you go through the props. I would have preferred an extra frame instead. Being under 250g is a big deal with all these ever-changing drone regulations. You just need to pass the online test and you're good to go - no registration headaches or worrying about where you can fly. -The Camera: The camera quality is way better than analog systems, so that's a nice step up. That said, it's not on the level of DJI or Walksnail - but those are premium systems and you're paying premium prices for them. For learning, this is more than adequate. I still need to test low light performance more thoroughly. I will update this when I tried it. - The Battery - My Biggest Gripe: 2S 840mAh. Basically 2 batteries 420mAh connected in series. But here's my least favorite part of this kit: the battery is proprietary. You can't buy other off-the-shelf batteries that fit. I get about ~8 minutes per battery if I'm not flying (or crashing) aggressively, way less if I'm pushing it. You should definitely budget for extra batteries because 3 batteries bundled is not enough for a good practice session. Another ~$31 for 3 batteries, which is actually a pretty good price. It is already in my shopping cart. I think they’re smart batteries. - Flight Characteristics: I'll be honest, I'm still confused about the rates and changing modes. This is not Betaflight, so you can't customize flying properties in detail like you can with other setups. I've heard you can flash Betaflight to it, but that's not my plan. My plan is simple: learn how to fly FPV without causing too much trouble. For that purpose, the stock settings work fine. They have 3 modes and 3 rates in Acro (the most difficult mode I need to learn). I wish there was a way to customize them in detail. Position hold works as you can see it in my video. It is very useful when you’re in panic, turn that on, level your quad. 2 things to watch out: changing mode may fail if your stick is not below certain % and other stick must be certain, second, switching mode (e.g. into Acro mode) will make your quad drop in altitude. Get used to it. - Who This Is For: -- You just want to start learning FPV -- You want to stay under 250g and avoid registration requirements -- You're okay crashing while you learn (you will crash, a lot) -- You want a nice self-contained all-in-one package at a fair price - Who Should Look Elsewhere: -- You want a drone you'll keep long-term and upgrade with soldered custom parts - the only thing I can think of that you can easily upgrade is the propeller -- You want detailed flight tuning -- You need a system you can grow with for years - Resale Value: I'd give it 4.5/5. These kits hold value reasonably well since there's always new people getting into the hobby. - Future Considerations: I use Walksnail for my land rover, so I really want to just own one goggle system eventually. Once I'm done learning on this, I might move on to something like the Gofilm 20, but that's Walksnail system. The nice thing would be if I could upgrade while keeping compatible goggles. - Bottom Line: This kit provides a relatively cheap learning experience with everything you need in one box. The price is nice, the quad is durable, and you can practice on simulators before risking the real thing. Yes, the proprietary battery situation is annoying and I wish there was lens adjustment on the goggles, but for what this is meant to be - a beginner's entry into FPV - it does the job well. I won't bother you with other details you can find in the product description. If you're new to FPV and want to learn without a huge investment, give this a shot. Remember, if you study the menu, do 3.1.5, and 3.1.6. You’re welcome. ... show more

  • Wonderful Beginner FPV Drone Kit in a Compact Travel Case
Awesome, I really like that everything fits neatly in the travel case. That is huge for my initial impression. It even fits the charger so you won't be wondering where that is. I’ve been flying FPV for a few years now and have built dozens of drones. My brother-in-law recently expressed interest in getting a starter kit. I wanted to recommend something I felt confident would actually work out for him, and I’m happy to say this is it. It will be a great starter kit and pretty much plug-and-play. One of the best parts about the drone is that you can fly it stabilized (and with position hold), and then as you get more interested and improve, you can switch over to ACRO. If you’re new to FPV, ACRO can be challenging at first. It's where you can do all sorts of crazy flying, like flips and dives - basically, you tell the drone exactly what to do. A lot of people learn the basics in a simulator before flying that way in real life - so having both options built in is a big win. The drone itself is excellent and everything has an impressive build quality to it. The image quality in the video feed is excellent. I fly their other digital system (Avatar), so I was curious what the Ascent video system would look like. It felt pretty much the same to me. Since it’s cheaper, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but the experience held up. I didn’t fly too far, but the control link is ExpressLRS, so that shouldn’t be an issue. A few notes from my perspective (and these are the kinds of things to point out as someone who's pretty hardcore into the building/customization DIY aspect of FPV): - Position hold works, but it’s not quite DJI-level. It definitely does the job, but if you get too high and the optical sensor can’t do its thing, it feels more like altitude hold and it can get pushed around a bit by wind. - Switching modes mid-flight was difficult. I think you need to be at low/zero throttle to switch modes, but that would obviously make the drone drop, so I mostly stayed in whichever mode I started the flight in. - The goggles are the same form factor as the Walksnail Avatar HD Goggles L, which for my big head is a little too small. But it was fine, and just a little light leakage. - I noticed while flying in stabilized mode, I was struggling a bit with wind. Although I think there’s also a dial I wasn’t using that can increase the available power. In acro (full control), wind wasn’t an issue. - Radio ELRS compatibility isn’t totally clear to me. I’m not sure if the included transmitter can be used on other quads (or vice-versa), but I’d suspect it should work. - I don’t know if you can adjust the tune like you can in Betaflight, but most consumers won’t want or need that anyway. Final thoughts: this is a very strong entrance into the consumer drone space. It includes everything a beginner could want, and the price is more than on target. Overall, I’m giving it a 5-star review and would feel good recommending it to someone just getting into FPV. I'm sure my brother-in-law will love it! ... show more
