The five pound (80 ounce) dead blow hammer by C & T tools is made in PRC (china). The hammer has steel shot, a steel inner core, and a PVC outer shell. I noticed that the handle shaft is on the thin side as handles go, and is not obvious from the item photos. My older wooden shaft dead blow has a rounder shaft and twice as thick. The hammer works great to reduce working surface damage when I am assembling wooden furniture. The bright orange color is easy to see. I think a good value for this hammer is $20. I do not feel this dead blow is balanced in the hand because the shaft has a smaller grip. I like that the soft plastic shell gives this hammer a versatility when working on easily damaged materials. 4 stars

When I took this dead blow hammer out of the box, just the orange plastic look made me think, “This hammer doesn’t look ready for business”. Then, I tried it out and I changed my mind. Although visually the molded construction doesn’t give a lot of confidence, in use it proved to be very durable. Just trying it out on some concrete, I soon became less worried about the tool and more about the cement I was beating on. The hammer is a generous 16 inches in length. It’s filed with sand to keep it from ricocheting after a blow. The molded plastic case makes it non-sparking as well. Again, just the look had me doubting if it really weighs a full 5-pounds. A postal scale shows it’s actually an ounce over at 5 lbs 1 oz. This is a good choice for driving stakes for gardening, tapping down pavers in landscaping, or anytime a non-marring hammer is the tool to use. Would it look better in a different color? Definitely…but it gets the job done and as bright as it is, you shouldn’t be able to lose it.

I reached the following conclusions in my review of this product: 1. If If you do not know what a dead blow hammer is used for, do not purchase this hammer. It is not interchangeable with any other type of hammer. Most negative reviews for dead blow hammers are a result of improper usage. What is a dead blow hammer used for? A dead blow hammer is a non-marring, low-rebound mallet used for controlled, high-impact force without damaging surfaces or causing excessive vibration. Filled with steel shot or sand, these hammers are ideal for woodworking (joining/disassembling), metal fabrication (shaping, flattening), automotive repair, and securing machinery.“ 2. Based on visual inspection, this hammer appears well manufactured with good fit and finish. 3. The product listing appears substantially accurate and reliable. 4. The hammer has a non-marring plastic face, plastic body and plastic handle. 5. This is a large and heavy dead blow hammer. Please make sure that you want this instead of a smaller hammer. 2-3 pound dead blow hammers are much more commonly used. I use this hammer for large machining setups and it works well for this purpose. Overall, I am pleased with this product.

This dead blow hammer is so high vis orange I'm pretty sure it can be seen from space. The textured handle is a perfect size in the hand. It seems to be quite durable, and came in especially handy when try to 'aggressively negotiate' with my car to get an exhaust manifold into place when it just didn't want to work with me.
