  • Perfect book
I have had this book for a while now and as a amateur photographer I refer back to it often. It has so much info that is written in everyday language for anyone to understand. Because it is written in everyday words and simply put it was much easier for me to understand. I have taken a photo class and found I was more confused as they always spoke above my understanding. I decided to purchase this book after seeing some info in a magazine. I am so glad I did. I have now been sharing it with my granddaughter as she is picking up the camera now. It's easy explanation is so wonderful. I say if you are an amateur photographer or helping someone else, it is well worth getting this book. It covers so many topics that you always have questions in and it explains each one thoroughly. It has 12 chapters. It deals with each topic and then the last chapter is putting it all together. It even has a chapter dedicated to the seasons. It has beautiful photos with the settings that were used under each photo that gives you a better understanding of which setting was used and why. Love this book. ... show more

  • Barely beyond snap shots!
I guess I should have been forewarned by the fact that the authors are mothers of child bearing age, and the cover photo should have given me a clue. If you are into semi-cutesy (but not particularly good) photos of children, you will find 30 of them in the first 50 pages. :( But I digress. The book couldn't be more basic if it tried. I figured that if I had learned nothing by page 50, it was time to pack it in with this book and write it off as a bad choice. Every photographic book on technique in my library has the kind of shots that make me think, "I would love to have captured that shot." I didn't have that experience once with this book (at least the 50 pages I waded through). Also, I have never (until this book) not learned something interesting, valuable or certainly something that I was not aware of in other books in my library. If you are an absolute beginner who doesn't know ISO from aperture, this might be the book for you - assuming you are into endless, boring shots of children. Having said that, there are a couple of good ones, but again nothing that gives you that "Oh Wow" reaction I often get when viewing other's work. From my perspective, if you are searching for a basic "how to" on digital photography, continue your research and find something on a bit of a higher level of information conveyance with great photographic examples that you wish you would have shot. As an aside, I purchased the book based on the great reviews and interestingly, saw a fascinating article soon after purchase about the high number of contrived (family members, friends, etc., etc.) reviews of products sold on-line. Of course having said that, there is a reason that automobiles come in different colors. Something detested by one might be loved by another. I belong to the former group in regards to this particular book. Perhaps you will belong to the latter - good luck if you purchase it! ... show more

  • the heart and soul of your photography.
Peta Mazey and Rachel Devine and Random House have made a masterpiece for everyone who wants to capture their life story. This is such an awe-inspiring and beautiful book. Everything from the flow and layout to the information chocked full of every 'secret' of the pros. This book will blow your mind. It speaks to every left and right brained person and the layout and flow really allow you to obtain the information quickly and easily. I love the way Peta and Rachel both have different angles and input for every subject covered. And the authors speak and write to us just like they are old friends who have stopped by for a cup of coffee. They cover it all from shooting in manual mode to how to take a large group photo! But most of all, they truly love and want you (the reader) to know that they are passionate about your success and telling your story in the best most possible light. You will not regret owning your own copy!! ... show more

  • Buy this book, it's well worth it.
Excellent book. After just a couple days with this book and my first DSLR camera I'm already improving my abilities. The book does an excellent job of illustrating what the different settings on a DSLR do such using actual images along with their settings to show you what things such as changing the aperture size and or shutter speed will do to your photo. The great thing is, it goes beyond that and talks about color composition, and setting up your image for the best impact. The authors then go even farther and give ideas and tips on organizing your photo collection so that you can always find the images you're looking for. I've learned all of this and I still haven't even finished the book yet. If you're spending the money on a DSLR camera and you're new to them you'd be a fool not to spend the extra few bucks on this book. ... show more

  • Wonderful, engaging, and informative resource for anyone wanting to take better photos
I'm one of the "moms with a camera" who bought her first DSLR about 6 years ago to take better photos of her kids. I so wish this book had been around when I was learning to use my "fancy camera!" Although I've been using my camera in manual mode for a while, I learned a lot from this book. First, there is a lot of technical information, but it's presented in a clear, easily-understandable fashion. Photography terms are explained and "de-mystified." Second, and most important to me, there is a lot of inspiration to be found in this book. The authors do a wonderful job of giving you new ways to look at the world through your lens and inspire you to make photographs that tell a story. There are many wonderful photographs in the book that serve as examples and starting points for you to explore your creativity. I definitely recommend this book to anyone wanting to improve their technical skills or awaken their photographic creativity. It's an excellent resource! ... show more
