Description

Halloween is as pure and undiluted as its title. In the small town of Haddonfield, Illinois, a teenage baby sitter tries to survive a Halloween night of relentless terror, during which a knife-wielding maniac goes after the town's hormonally charged youths. Director John Carpenter takes this simple situation and orchestrates a superbly mounted symphony of horrors. It's a movie much scarier for its dark spaces and ominous camera movements than for its explicit bloodletting (which is actually minimal). Composed by Carpenter himself, the movie's freaky music sets the tone; and his script (cowritten with Debra Hill) is laced with references to other horror pictures, especially Psycho. The baby sitter is played by Jamie Lee Curtis, the real-life daughter of Psycho victim Janet Leigh; and the obsessed policeman played by Donald Pleasence is named Sam Loomis, after John Gavin's character in Psycho. In the end, though, Halloween stands on its own as an uncannily frightening experience--it's one of those movies that had audiences literally jumping out of their seats and shouting at the screen. ("No! Don't drop that knife!") Produced on a low budget, the picture turned a monster profit, and spawned many sequels, none of which approached the 1978 original. Curtis returned for two more installments: 1981's dismal Halloween II, which picked up the story the day after the unfortunate events, and 1998's occasionally gripping Halloween H20, which proved the former baby sitter was still haunted after 20 years. --Robert Horton

  • I prefer the look of this edition to the 35th Ann. edition
I actually prefer this edition (Anchor Bay) of the movie to the more recent 35th Anniversary edition. The nighttime scenes are easier to see - the 35 ANN. Edition is very dark and overstaurates these scenes with the color blue, making it look like a more modern film. This older transfer has caught some criticism for having too much green in the outside scenes - though this is truer to the look of the original film, it isn't appropriate for a movie that takes place in autumn. It's also true that this edition doesn't have as many extras, but the commentary track with Carpenter, Debra Hill, and Jamie Lee Curtis is one of the best I've ever heard and the 45 minute making of is also surprisingly solid. When I bought this edition, the 35th Ann. edition cost twice as much, so I feel I made the right choice. ... show more

  • The First...The Original...The BEST...
John Carpenter's original HALLOWEEN is by far the best of the series. This "economically" produced horror film started the Slasher Movie craze, made Jamie Lee Curtis a star, and held the record for highest grossing Independent Film for many years. It's become a staple on TV during Halloween season, and has been re-made (badly) by Rob Zombie. There's talk of yet another reboot, but it I doubt another director can recreate the simplicity of the original. It's been done, pretty much perfectly, so just leave it alone... ... show more

  • CLASSIC HORROR AT ITS CAMPIEST!!
I very rarely give 5 stars, especially to a horror film - but how could I not give HALLOWEEN (the original) 5 stars?!?!? It’s a classic!!! I have the absolute BEST memories of watching this movie as a tween with my friends and all of us being scared out of our wits and screaming at the top of our lungs!!! It’s one of those - it’s so bad it’s good - films! Like Friday the 13th one can’t beat it for campiness!! It’s in its 40’s - made somewhere around circa 1978 or 79, it has the debut of Jaimie Lee Curtis - following her famous parents into the film industry, her co-stars, all equally bad and campy, and a seemingly invincible Michael Meyers!!! It’s fantastic! It’s great fun!! And the perfect film to watch every Halloween!!! ... show more

  • The perfect horror film
The powerful effect of the original Halloween is even more potent today than ever after a bunch of entertaining but misguided sequels and goofy rip offs. Although it seems very basic it's been impossible to replicate with the same effect. The timeless horror tale of innocent young women that are stalked by an escaped mental patient on the title holiday is atmospheric and gorgeously filmed setting the standard for the slasher film. Jamie Lee Curtis is layered and likable as Laurie and Michael is a looming, dread inducing presence. John Carpenter's ultimate masterpiece is truly a perfect film and one of my all time favorites. ... show more

  • Great selection for my first horror film!
Super scary and super awesome. My husband is getting me slowly into horror films. I've never watched any horror films before Halloween. Well, aside from the uncontrolled screams on a few occasions, I survived it pretty darn well. I adore Jamie Lee Curtis and here she is at 20 something years old, captivating in her performance. If you haven't seen this, it's a great intro to horror, and as it turns out, a key influence in how horror films started, the murderer without any clear motives, and so on. Well-done! Not sure I'm going to see the sequels though. ... show more

  • Classic
When October rolled around I decided to check out the Halloween franchise since the new one was coming out. Jamie Lee Curtis stars as Laurie Strode who is put through terror when a crazed man escapes from an asylum. No one is safe when "The Boogie Man" is out. This is a classic slasher film and even though it's from the late '70s, the quality and aesthetic is pure gold and I do encourage to watch this. Not for kids so I'd say mostly for teenagers or ones that like these kinds of movies. The story is good and it spans a lot of sequels (no matter if the quality goes down in storytelling). John Carpenter's choice in the iconic theme stands the test of time. I can't give this enough praise! Enjoy! ... show more

  • Finally in my collection
Horror movies is my favorite movie category. I've always loved them yet this movie has been missing from collection (in DVD format). It was time to replace that old VHS copy and get updated. Quality of the disc is excellent and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing Michael Myers back out in Haddonfield once again. It's been a number of years since I watched it but it remains a classic. John Carpenter has made many great movies over his storied career but this his best in my opinion. While not heavy on the gore it more than makes up for it in suspense and musical score. Donald Pleasance and Jamie Lee Curtis put in outstanding performances. Highly recommended. ... show more
