I really wanted to like this balaclava. The material felt good and seemed adequate for my needs. I thought the hinge cut would make it easier to get a comfortable fit, but it always felt like it was pushing the tip of my (average) nose flat no matter how I configured it.

I have the BUFF Adult ThermoNet Hinged Balaclava in the “Coast Multi” color option, which has a bright pink print with palm trees on teal and black. In person, the pink leans fuschia, so it’s not super bright, but I personally prefer that. The material is lightweight and stretchy. It feels like a soft t-shirt, so it’s comfortable to wear and have against my face. All of the seams are finished, which I like, as I have some buffs with unfinished seams that roll up and fray after a few washes. The only unfinished area on this one is the inside holes for the VaporGrid air vent over the mouth. This spot is actually my favorite feature, as it reduces goggle fog. I use buffs and goggles to snow blow my long driveway, and I usually can’t see by the middle of it since my goggles fog up. I also like the ponytail vent in the back. After a while, the bump of my ponytail inside a normal buff and the weight of it mashed against my head gets uncomfortable. I don’t like the design of the nose portion. I know it has to be tight to block out the weather, but my head isn’t that big and it pulls uncomfortably tight over my nose. There’s a small transparent loop inside the buff, right in the middle, so it sits on the bridge of your nose. I assume this is for hanging the buff after washing or for storage. There is a small bump in the seam where the loop is sewn in, and that irritates my face.

This is a great - and unique - offering by Buff. It's super comfortable, first of all - if there are any seems in there, I can't feel them. And it's not itchy at all, unlike my "Young Buck"-style ski-mask (which is actually meant for robbing convenience stores). This really works out because you can put a hat over this is you want full warmth of a hat, but now you can cover any or all of your face for warmth as well, without hot-boxing yourself in. This is really well-thought out. And it's great to have the talking vent for both speaking clarity and venting moisture from your mouth. Also great to be able to just pull the whole bottom part down when desired. Really a great solution for super cold adventures (including skiing, of course).

Bad design. Sides are stitched together with a small piece of thread, supposedly to keep the mask together at your temples so you can pull it under your chin w/o exposing your ears. Broke as soon as I put it on. Also, a very tight fit. No stars for a fail, but Amazon makes you rank w/ a star before you can leave a review, thus, one star.

It does fit a bit snug but I didn't mind that. Not bulky, you can absolutely put a ballcap, fedora, or cowboy hat on over it. I'm mule riding the canyon this Jan and this is going with me. I did get the all-black which looks like a religious garment but I always wear a hat so no worries for me. Feels warm and I love the breathing slats in front of the mouth.

Love that the breathing holes keep my glasses from fogging up. I look a chance on the blue (ethereal aqua), hoping I wouldn’t get one that looks like blue mummy wrappings. I got lucky. Will upload some pictures showing the particular pattern I got. Since there are many pieces sewn together, each one if likely unique. But that’s JustMe.
