This was fairly inexpensive and quite easy to get working, also I was able to very quickly get it working with a raspberry pi as the matrix's DIN line doesn't actually require the full 5V that the rest of the matrix needs, the output of the RPI (pin 18 if you're using the defaults for the python rpi-ws281x-matrix-python sample code that in turn uses the rpi-ws281x module) is sufficient at a lowly 3.3 volts even though I'm using it a little out of spec. This worked without a level shifter or a transistor for me. Note that I did need to change the case of one import and remove the x on some xranges to get everything working nicely in python3. Don't forget to connect your external power supply ground to the RPI ground too. ... show more

For something so expensive (it's a glorified LED Strip) that needs such a beefy power supply, I was expecting it to be brighter than this. Its maximum brightness just isn't high enough for my use. Honestly the real mystery is why it's a 5V board. If it were 12V, it wouldn't need such a high Amperage to run, the power supply could be smaller and cheaper, and it would probably run cooler too. Great LED matrix, easily controlled with any addressable LED controller. I use an ESP8266 with WLED (v0.14.0-b1 supports 2D matrix!). Plenty bright, fast response. I 3d printed a 16x16 grid and put this into a 7" x 7" picture frame (it's 160mm x 160mm, which is about 6.29" x 6.29").
