Awesome radio. Was a little frustrating at first getting it set up since you can’t (as far as I’ve been able to find) program it with a computer and are forced to use their app and your phone. Then came the frustration of having created the .csv files on my computer, transferred them to my phone, gone to the app, connected to the radio, and tried to upload them only to find out this radio requires its own “special” .csv format. The format example on Btech’s website was helpful as far as identifying what was different, but the problem is I don’t have excel, so I couldn’t use their template and just input my frequencies. After much frustration and digging online, I found an old Reddit post where someone had the same issue with one of Btech’s handheld radios. A commenter suggested a website that purely takes CHIRP .csv files and formats them for Btech radios. Lo and behold, that worked! Once I had converted my .csv files with that online converter, they uploaded to the radio no problem. Then came the issue of transmitting though… see, the paper manual included lists a bunch of RX only frequencies, and then a few RX/TX frequencies. Next to SOME of the RX only frequencies though, there are asterisks. On the bottom of the page, it says an asterisk next to a frequency group means absolutely no TX ability. This was confusing since not ALL the frequencies listed in the RX only column had the asterisk, yet my radio would not allow me to TX on them anyways… I was nearing the point of returning the radio, since I could not figure out if it was a me problem, a radio problem, a Btech manual problem, or if some setting was just not enabled. Then I decided to connect to the radio with my Samsung Galaxy phone…. Let me say, if you have an iPhone, don’t bother using it with the radio unless all you want to do is change a few very basic settings and upload your frequency groups. If you have an android, USE IT! There are WAY MORE options available for use on the Btech Android app, including way more technical and in depth settings. Suddenly, what had felt practically like a kids toy radio on the iPhone, seemed like what was actually advertised; a full on, high quality, highly customizable, mobile radio. Without possibly compromising any regulatory requirements or agreements, I won’t specify some of the settings you have access to via Android, but I can say that one of my big interests in this radio was for actual public safety use. I’m a police officer and wanted something more powerful and reliable than my department issued handheld when off duty and had initially been disappointed with the restrictions imposed by Apple and the iPhone app. Now that I used my Android to program though, I’m able to use my radio for the intended purposes. Overall, I think this is a great radio and fair price. It has a “relay” option which essentially acts as a radio traffic parrot and re-transmits whatever traffic comes through. This is cool because I found that you can set it up to listen to one frequency, and parrot that frequencies traffic over a different frequency of your choosing, meaning you could theoretically set this radio up in an optimal location to receive traffic from FAR away and have it parrot that traffic to you on a handheld even FURTHER away. The size of the radio isn’t super tiny like some of the ultra compact mobile units out there, but it’s slimmer than most radios in its class thanks to having the screen on the mic. The screen is super customizable too, allowing you to change colors of each different line of text and such. Power is something I’m still trying to figure out at the moment… from looking on Btech’s website, they say it has a built in lithium battery, but I can’t exactly find a ton of concrete answers on whether that’s accurate and what exactly that means for use of the radio. I have the radio hard wired to my trucks battery, and it seems like whatever battery they have built into this radio, it’s sufficient enough that I can leave the truck sitting over night with the radio connected and powered on and my truck’s battery isn’t even touched. Currently I’m experimenting with how long the radio battery actually lasts before I decide if I need to get a low voltage cutoff to protect my truck’s battery battery from being drained when sitting for more than a day or two. Oh and a side note, with the Android app you can actually live listen to the radio traffic, as well as use the PTT button on your phone screen to talk!     • Exceeds expectation
So far I have only used the radio for data, but my overall impression is that the unit exceeds expectations. The UV-50Pro is closing the link at line of sight at 40 miles with signals that are mostly noise as opposed to say a Yaesu which almost requires full quieting to decode the FSK modulation. What I have not done is measured the RF output with respect to spurious content or power output. Though I can say that during full power transmit the radio draws ~9.5A at 13.6V. Which is just under what most lighter plugs will supply if you plan on using the radio just plugged into a lighter socket versus hard mounting with a permanent wired connection. Note there is a lighter plug cable on Amazon with an appropriate Molex connector which can fit the radio, though I purchased a similar cable from Ham Radio Outlet which has no problem supply the 9.5 amps. The Amazon web page indicates that this radio is subject to many returns, where I am not sure why people are returning the unit. Clearly the cost of the handset extension cable if you want to remote mount the unit is a factor where the OEM has an option or Amazon has a third party option. Or suck it up and purchase the BlueTooth microphone for ~$85 unless there is a sale which happens from time to time. I haven't purchased either but a cable or the microphone is in my future. Programming in very similar to the UV-Pro HT where there are a few more option such as setting the radio to power on with prime power or require pushing a button on the microphone to power up the radio after +12 is applied. That said this radio can't be programmed with chirp directly. But you can go to RepeaterBook and download a file that is compatible with the Android or iOS app to be imported into the radio. And there is a website (source or online) that permits editing the CSV file. While the jury is still out I found that I can leave digital mode on, set to a specific programmed APRS channel while leaving KISS on as well. This enables beaconing position while having an app on my phone jump in to tune the radio to for example a WinLink channel to exchange mail. All the while monitoring a voice channel. Is something missed? Likely but to date I have not seen this as a show stopper. The web would suggest you have to run this mode in isolation. Note I have a Yaesu multi band with APRS. I'm finding this unit has more capability though at the same time I suspect the dual conversion architecture of the Yaesu will win in certain RF environments. That said I have a local (e.g. 5 miles distant) FM radio station which tends to crush cheap China ham radio FM radio reception. This is not the case for the UV50-Pro. In addition the air band reception is no worse than my dedicated Yaesu air band transceiver that normally sits in my flight bag. Can't transmit but certainly can receive the local airport's ATIS just as good as the Yaesu where the signal is very weak given the distance from the airport. When operating the main unit gets warm but not hot. There is a fan on the back of the unit which to date has not turned on. Perhaps sitting in the direct sun on the dashboard with a high transmit duty cycle... Overall I think this radio is worth the money. ... show more

    • The Tesla of mobile radios, with the same mixed emotions
I wanted to like this radio so badly, and for the right people I'm sure it will be amazing. Unfortunately, I use my radios while driving and off-roading, which means I cannot be staring at my phone or a tiny screen trying to get things done. It has the the worst microphone ergonomics that I've experienced, with very slow, careful, awkward taps on either side of the mic just to adjust volume, and changing the channel is worse. The app is crowded and feature packed, and almost as awkward to navigate as the menu using the microphone. We have a Tesla, and although it's high-tech and powerful, I hate it a little more every time I have to drive it because I have to take my eyes off of the road to look at a screen and click through sub-menus to control basic things like lights and HVAC. This radio reminds me of that. I was excited by the potential of the wireless mics, but now I realize it's not the solution I hoped it was. ... show more

    • Amazing radio!
I got this radio; because I needed something more powerful and with the new AI Noise Reduction technology. This is an Amateur (ham) radio and requires an amateur radio license to transmit. Frequency coverage is only on the 2 meter and 70 CM amateur bands. It is illegal to use this radio on GMRS! BTECH sells a similar radio for GMRS. This radio is heavy for its size. It looks pretty durable. Good sized heat sink, as well as a fan. Features include APRS, GPS, Satellite tracking as well as a KISS TNC for packet radio that connects to your computer via bluetooth. Programming is via a mobile app. No, it does not support Chirp. No, this isn't the end of the world. Transmit audio is good. With the AI signal processing turned on, it's phenomenal. Receive audio is very good. With the AI processing turned on, it's very impressive. Any static at all on a received signal goes away totally. Now,the AI doesn't work with the Bluetooth mic connected. The radio accommodates the BS-22 and BS-50 bluetooth speaker microphones. Power output was measured into a dummy load. I got 54 watts output on 2 meters and 48 watts on UHF. Nice. The radio will transmit on 220 Mhz. I didn't test power output. I do NOT use it there as it wasn't designed to work there and could potentially damage the radio. The radio is a bit pricey; but with all the features, it's worth it in my opinion. The cons: Transmit audio is a little low with the AI off. Update: Recent firmware updates have addressed this issue. The microphone cord is much too short if you want to mount the radio under your seat in a mobile configuration. You will have to buy their extension cable.     • Be prepared for poor documentation and lots of frustration if buy BTech branded VERO radios.
While the radio functions work fine, the instructions are almost worthless. The app is also very difficult to use as the old instructions are not clear and are missing several features that are added with the latest update. I also have the older less expensive model which has the same issues. Same for the hand held radio. I am a retired engineer and an extra class radio enthusiast, my friend also an engineer and extra class radio enthusiast. Between us we have over 100 years of high tech work experience and 100 years of Ham license holders, and have wasted many hours trying to get APRS and it's features functional. ... show more

A surprising and good radio for the size, I wanted a APRS and a Hand held control head. Installed it and it works great. The control head has loud audio.. Lots of features. After install--- Bummer-- The VHF side rec was deaf out of box. But I loved the form factor and the Audio (TX audio is done well+ it has Mic gain to set to the background if needed) So, I just ordered another one and swapped the deck and returned it. It plays with no issues now. Really a neat radio and makes the stated power on both bands. So will post back in a few months. Do not expect issues as some of my friends have this radio with no issues.. K0AKK ... show more

    • Audio RX Very Poor
I took a chance on this radio hoping to free up some space in my truck. I keyed up my local repeater and every contact I had reported very low RX. One reported that I was hitting the repeater, but he could not hear me at all. Everyone else advised I was barely audible. I cranked the mic gain to max, which didn't seem to help at all. Awesome App to program the radio once you get the hang of it. Read the fine print on frequencies. Does not cover the traditional VHF (136-174MHz) and UHF (400-520MHz) frequency bands, Its much smaller and limited to the 2-meter band (144-148 MHz) and the 70-centimeter band (420-450 MHz). Does NOT cover GMRS (as expected, since there is a sister radio to cover this) but excludes a lot of other frequencies. Also, as others have stated, power output is over half of what it advertises, however surprising well sound for both TX and Rx. ... show more
