This power supply is just the right supply for all your ham gear power needs. Don't let people think that just because it's a switching power supply it may not work. Believe me, this device works well and with no switching noise and plenty of current at 50 Amps.

    • So Far So Good
Works well and I haven't heard the fan turn on yet but I only pull about 23 amps from it. It give me a lot of leeway in amperage which is why the fan hasn't really kicked in. Build quality looks good, puts out a solid 13.8 volts. Well worth the price so far. Hope it runs for the long term.

    • Plenty of current with a nice meter display and front panel options.
I've been using this RPS-50PRO for about 3 weeks. It's worked flawlessly so far, though I haven't pushed it hard at all. The heaviest I've used it is transmitting ~50 W on a VHF radio for a short time. That was a 9 amp draw. I have a 100 W capable Ham base station which would draw about 23 A. A supply rated for 25 continuous should handle things, but extra capacity is never a bad thing. I got this to replace a TekPower TP30SWII. The TekPower is a 25 amp (30 max & 25 continuous) supply which honestly covered my needs for power, but it has a needle meter which can show you voltage and current, but not both at once. One has to switch between which measurement to display. The other thing is the ammeter side was flaky and not accurate. Bottom line I want to see both voltage and current at once at a glance, and if I had to pick one to leave it on most of the time it would be current. So, time for an upgrade. TekPower came out with a newer model (the TP30SWV) which has a digital display that shows voltage and current simultaneously but otherwise is the same. This would undoubtedly meet my requirements as well. The TP30SWV appears to be the same unit as BTech's RPS-30PRO. Of those two I would choose the BTech RPS-30PRO because of BTech's U.S. support etc. Also, the RPS-30PRO has white contrast on the adjustment knobs for voltage and noise offset. That's a nearly insignificant detail, but a nice touch just the same. But, since I was upgrading... I saw this newer BTech RPS-50PRO. It also has a dual digital display which has a very nice high contrast uniform backlight. Better yet, it supports twice the sustained current draw as the others mentioned here. I don't technically need that much, but extra capacity can't hurt and probably will offer better reliability for the long haul. Other benefits of the RPS-50PRO is that it offers what I consider more flexible front panel power connectors. Like the other units mentioned, the RPS-50PRO has binding posts on the rear which is pretty standard and also a 10 A cigarette lighter socket on the front. It does not have a spring terminals like on the other units but, instead it provides 2x power-pole connectors and 2x USB C connectors. The USB C connectors are 5V of course and 2 A capable. The power-poles are what helped sell me. The USB ports would have also helped sell me except they are unfortunately a bit hamstrung. See below for info on that in the criticisms section. Now I'll mention what I don't really like about this unit. The list is pretty short and not show stopping, but I think it's deserved criticism. Unless this unit lets me down in the future, really at this point my only real gripe with it is the USB ports. They are USB C. That would be on the right track for the future IF they were PD (power delivery capable), which they are not. Having a box like this with all that DC power capability and not providing the PD circuitry is a crying shame. But, if you are going to skip the PD capability, it would be better to provide USB A ports instead of C. Why you ask? Because if you have a USB C port which is dumb, meaning lacking PD circuitry, then in many / most cases anything you plug into it will default to limiting it's current draw draw to 0.5 A lowest common denominator USB spec power draw. 0.5 A is only 25% of the measly 2 A the port could otherwise support. That's only enough power to keep a lot of modern smartphones just treading water with no appreciable recharging possible. If the ports were of the A type, there is a better chance that your device would be able to pull the rated 2 A out of the port. It's not guaranteed as it depends on a number of variables (beyond the scope of this review), but the odds are at least much better. But with this: dumb C type ports, you are virtually guaranteed to be limited to just a sip of power. If you are going to have USB C ports, then they should have circuitry which can negotiate the power levels appropriately. I don't know what the margins on these RPS-50PROs are, but PD smarts could probably be added without cutting into it too deeply. If not, an appropriately modest price increase to accommodate PD smarts would be well worth it IMHO. Otherwise, just put type A ports on please. ... show more

I'd like to open it up to see what kind of voodoo is going on under the hood but this thing is like an Alternator clamped at 13.8 volts very accurately even under a fully loaded JL-Audio system. You can flip the switch to allow a more tunable voltage but that lowers the max amperage to 45A which is expected. It probably doesn't need a huge external heatsink because it has a fan. For anyone comparing this to PC PSUs that are rated higher it's important to note that it takes a more heavy-duty component/construction to deliver a rock-steady 13.8V at 50A on a single rail under heavy fluctuating loads. This is an invaluable tool for testing and working on automotive components. ... show more

I've already thrown out the box it came in and I live away from the UPS return center so I have a unit I can't trust or use. ... show more

The 50A output of this power supply is great and having anderson plugs on the front for testing is also a huge win. It doesn't appear to generate much noise at all and it also has a fan with a temp sensor that only comes on under load. Now to the very fatal flaws of this power supply. First, there are no output fuses for any of the 13.8V outputs. They all land directly to the pcb main output lug. There is the main input fuse by the 120v socket for the cord, but that's the only over current protection you get. On to the second huge flaw. When turning off the main power switch, it does not instantly turn off the outputs. Radios tent to flash on and off when the power supply main switch is turned off until the voltage drops below the forward voltage of the devices or radios. This can be hard on your equipment. The cause of this flashing/pulsing is the collapsing of the electromagnetic field on the large transformer in the power supply. As the field collapses, it oscillates at 60Hz as the field collapses. You can actually hear the transformer ticking as the field collapses with the top cover off. There is a fix for this if you are willing to modify this power supply. I used a small toggle switch to turn on and off a 12v 50A relay and put the relay between the main rear 50A output and the 13.8v output terminal on the pcb. The other outputs aren't on this relay since I only plan to use them for bench testing. Having this relay on the main output will protect your devices by if you use the installed switch to kill output power before turning off the main power switch. Electronically quiet, and the meter shows the voltage and current draw. A two-position switch gives you a choice of fixed 13.8 volts, or a variable pot that can take it to near 15 volts. No problem with my radios. Voltage is stable and current draw is as advertised. Yet the price is $100 less than the "competition." This is, after all, a switching supply as opposed to a linear supply, but this power supply does not generate hum in the radios, but my old Pyramid Phase III -a linear supply -- does!
