  • very easy to install and use: essential for quilters especially
I was apprehensive about installing this walking foot after I read reviews here saying that it was difficult to install. It came with some directions--in 4 languages even--but I found the directions somewhat confusing, and so I didn't try to install it for several months. I recently did try though, and found that it's very easy. I added a couple of photos showing both sides of the foot and how the screw attaches it to the machine. There's no need to undo the screw on the upper side; the plastic "claw" on the walking foot slides over the stem of the long screw without undoing it. Be sure to use the long screw that comes with the foot to attach it on the left side. I didn't see the long screw at first and tried using the regular screw that comes with the machine. It did work, but it was too short and difficult to attach. With the long screw, it's fine. The directions say that the foot only works with stitch lengths of 5 mm. (That would be 5 stitches to the inch.) I found that it actually works fine with several different stitch lengths, but I preferred the smaller stitches. (My machine, which is a Brother XL-2600 has a stitch regulator that measures 4-3-2-1 where "1" is the smallest stitch. With this walking foot, my best results were at about "2", but it worked fine even at 4.) I have only started quilting recently, although I have been sewing for many years. A quilter friend told me that this type of foot is essential, and I unfortunately didn't follow her advice soon enough. Big mistake! This foot is wonderful. It moves the fabric along as you sew, and the underside doesn't bunch up or gather. It's also good for layers of fabric when you're matching plaids. There is a list on Amazon's page of the Brother models it fits. Be sure to buy this genuine Brother foot, not the cheap knockoff. It's a great accessory to have! ... show more

  • a MUST HAVE
For anyone who owns a sewing machine, I would say this foot is a MUST HAVE. There are times when nothing else will substitute. I am a seamstress and own 6 sewing machines. Two I have lent to daughters, so I have three I use alternatively, depending on my project, plus we have a heavy-duty machine. Recently, my husband purchased a Brother. I was surprised and asked him why he did that since we already have four other machines. He is a boat-builder and wanted to try his hand at sewing the sail for it. He purchased the Dacron sail-cloth. It is such a heavy-weight processed cloth that pinning it is next to impossible. He discovered a specialized double-stick tape that works, but it is so slippery, the poor little Brother machine was not able to handle this alone, so I purchased this walking foot. It has made all the difference. I have a picture of him on the floor, sail cloth surrounding him, taking up most of our front room, foot pedal in one hand, along with the cloth, the other hand behind the machine, feeding the cloth through as he sews this difficult piece. I am so proud of him for his efforts and excellent work. He truly feels he couldn't have done what he did without that walking foot. To my husband I say: Well done, Friend. ~a ... show more

  • I can sew again.
I had this in and out of my cart several times as it was pricier than I expected but I finally went for it. Now I am sorry it took so long. I have an inexpensive Brother XL2600i that I bought almost 10 years ago and I struggled to sew anything that had any thickness to it, like denim, bowl cozies, hot pads and upholstery fabric. I installed this in less than a minute and it works so well. I haven't had a jam or gotten material stuck in the feed dogs or any issues since I bought it and I have been using every day sewing quilted hanging pods and quilted bowl cozies. Worth the money and much more cost effective than buying a new machine. ... show more

  • It works as expected.
After reading the reviews for the knock-off clones ($15 ish), I decided to buy a genuine Brother walking foot. However, when it arrived, it does not have Brother on the side, and it seems pretty much like all the others. Knock-off reviews state (broke after two weeks, cheap feeling, leaked oil, etc.). So, I spent the $50 for the supposedly genuine article. I can't tell if it was worth it, yet. This unit is sort-of a walking foot. It does not draw the fabric in, it relies (as do all the others I suspect) on drawing the fabric forward via the lower dog feet. What it does do is advance the upper feet forward an appropriate amount for the stich length selected, and then lifts the presser foot up while pressing the articulated feet down, so the fabric is held by the articulating upper feet only (which glide very easily). So, it is definitely assisting in the drawing of the fabric through the machine. If the device was to power draw the fabric forward, it would only work for one stich length. As it operates, it works for any stitch length, so I suspect that is why it is designed this way. It has the wide opening, so you can select left-center-right, or some level of zig-zag. It feels a bit cheap for $50. But it has not broken, so I have nothing to complain about. It does handle thicker assemblies well. ... show more
