  • Great bag, but falls over constantly when packed
Size: Carry-On 22-Inch Color: Black
I am a frequent traveler for business. Everyone told me to buy a Briggs & Riley. When the wheels fell off (literally) my old bag I purchased this one. Pros: space is amazing, opens and closes easily, wheels roll easily and turn easily Con: and this is overwhelming...it falls over constantly. The front wheels are smaller than the rear. As a result, of not positioned correctly, the bag falls over 100% of the time when packed. Now if I position the wheels correctly, it won’t fall...but it’s impossible to get this right every time....and down it goes. Constantly. After three months I’m already in the market for a new bag. For all I love about this one, the falling over is more than I can handle. It has almost knocked people over on more than one occasion. Note, it won’t fall when empty...only when packed and there is weight in the bag. It leans forward slightly and that weight transfer forward takes the bag right over every time. No, it’s not that the contents within aren’t secure. The issue is the wheels being different sizes. ... show more

  • Vs. Tumi Alpha 2 Medium Trip Exp 4 Wheel Packing Case
Size: Checked-Large 28-Inch Color: Black
I got this one and the Tumi Alpha 2 Medium Trip Exp 4 Wheel Packing Case (I'm also a big TUMI fan) and decided to keep the "best" one. The breakdown was like this: - LOOKS Tumi won. Cooler looking all around. - HANDLE Briggs & Riley Baseline Large Expandable won. Longer handle. - SUITER Preferred the Briggs, as it holds things down better, with better straps. Can fit 2 jackets on hangers (I use the TUMI hangers), although barely. - SIZE Briggs has a narrower "profile" (because it's wider), which brings me to - CAPACITY The Briggs is less "architectural" or something; less wasted space here and there maybe. The Briggs just holds MORE. WEIGHT Briggs is like 5 lbs. lighter. An easy win there. WHEELS Sightly better / smoother on the Briggs. - SUMMARY Okay, so I don't feel as "cool" with the Briggs, but it does have a nice look. Less likely to attracted a thief's attention on the carousel, too. I have some tags and luggage straps to help it stand out. Just an easy win for me. The Briggs holds more in less space, and weighs less. I still love my Alpha 2 carry on though. ... show more

  • Worst Case Scenario!
Size: Carry-On 22-Inch Color: Black
This carry on spinner luggage is a monumental waste of money. I paid almost $600.00 and got not a "premium" piece of luggage, but a cheap piece of junk. If I had flushed this money down the toilet at least I would have been spared the aggravation of using this defective piece of garbage. Too bad there is not an option for minus stars in this review! I purchased this luggage in order to carry on some delicate photographic equipment on a flight from NYC to Florida. I wanted to avoid the potential damage caused by checking in luggage and having it manhandled. It was a regional jet which didnt allow carry-ons so I was forced to leave it by the entry door of the plane prior to boarding. Upon deplaning, when I went to pick up the luggage, I saw that the top handle was half detached. The end of the handle, it turns out, was made of plastic which in turn had split (see photo). When I attempted to lift the bag by the still connected part of the handle, the other end detached as well. Delta Airlines was willing to repair the luggage and gave me the necessary packing materials to send it to their repair facility. They were extremely courteous and apologetic. My concern was, however, that if this happened once, what would prevent it from happening again? Upon arriving home I called Briggs and Reilly and spoke to someone who told me B&R would repair it if I sent it to them or they could send me a replacement handle which I could replace myself. Thirdly, I had the option of taking it to an authorized repair center. When I asked why the handle was so poorly designed – previous B&R bags I've owned had handles that were constructed of all leather and very sturdy – the service rep said that the new design was much easier to repair. So for the sake of repair ease, they created a far inferior handle. Great job! She also said this rarely happened and that it was caused by luggage getting stuck in airline conveyor belts. But there was no conveyor belt in this scenario, just a poorly designed handle. Another instance of a well-reputed company living on the fumes of their past products and looking to save a few pennies. The handle ends should have been constructed of metal, or at the very least, have been reinforced with metal. (A search on Amazon for replacement luggage handles calls up numerous options with metal handle ends costing $10.00 or less.) I called Modern Leather in NYC, whose specialty is repairing luggage and they told me this was a very common occurrence. Ironically, they warned me, that if I had them replace my handle with something studier I would be voiding my lifetime warranty. What a joke. In addition, the bag is very unstable – it easily falls over unless the wheels are perfectly aligned – a fact I was willing to live with because the size was exactly what I needed. However, in lieu of the sub-par handle, it is unusable. Add instability to the list of reasons to not purchase this bag, unless you enjoy constantly bending over to upright your fallen luggage. Happily Amazon, after hearing the details of my ordeal, very generously gave me the option of having the luggage replaced or returning it. I am returning it. ... show more

  • Horrified!
Size: Checked-Large 28-Inch Color: Navy
We just purchased our third generation of Briggs and Riley suitcases - 2 large, expandable spinners - for our nearly-a-month-long trip overseas. We packed one for my husband and one for me. The suitcases are fully loaded but there was no need to expand them; they zipped closed easily. Mine weighed 60 lbs, my husband's, 63 lbs - not excessive for the length of our trip. Imagine my horror when I went to lift the suitcases and realized that the expansion system (which does not zip closed) allows the handle to move 4-6 inches away from the body of the suitcase. The bag may be secure, but it looks and feels like it's going to tear apart. I'm horrified and disappointed. As far as I'm concerned this is a major design flaw. Follow Up: Back from our trip and even more upset. We actually purchased three of these suitcases from Amazon - for me (blue), my husband (black) and my niece (blue). After the three-week trip, the top handles on two of the cases have broken through their moorings. The bags as I said previously were not overloaded: my case was 60 pounds and my niece's case was 57 pounds, which is well within the limits for a suitcase of this size. Having been a Briggs and Riley customer for many years, and willing to spend almost $2,100 on these three cases, I don't think there's a good answer. With the terrible track record (2 out of 3 cases with broken handles on their first trip) I don't want replacements of the same design. And I have no confidence that repairing the two handles will prevent the problem from recurring. Upset and disappointed. ... show more
