  • Beautiful well-made Bb Picc Trumpet
I played Eb Descant trumpet in college 50 years ago, but that's my only experience near to playing the Picc. To normal-register Bb players: don't think a piccolo is going to give you a super high register unless you already have that ability. What it provides is better selectivity, that is you are less likely to hit the wrong pitch as a regular Bb gives little selectivity in the high and super-high registers -- that's what a Picc gives you. Also, if your natural ability is to have good pitch, then remember you'll need that with the Picc because it is up to YOU to do what you need to, to center on the right pitch. It is not the instrument's fault if you can't play in tune. It is more difficult on a Picc. Now about this PT-196: It comes with a nice soft case, an extra lead tube for lengthening the pitch down to A, gloves and rag, and a generic 14A4A mouthpiece. The Schilke 14a4a had always helped me in the high register and certainly for me, is what I need to help me play in the stratosphere. But you can use any trumpet mouthpiece, just the thicker rim and shallower cup helps me a lot. If you can think in low-register-fingerings while you buzz an octave higher, you can start playing a Picc right away - but expect to train yourself. I was able to play it right away and was very pleased with the clear sound -- a professional may be able to tell you why you need to spend $1000, $2000 on up. The quality of the valves is the same as my $2000+ Callet Bb. The Lacquer and tubing-work seems great but I have never had a Picc before so I cannot compare that or the sound or the feel to another brand. Complaints? No spit key. Unload condensation like a Horn player... rotate it out of the lead pipe. I put Vaseline on the first valve slide but it still doesn't remove easily, but why does it need to? Same with 3rd and 4th slides -- I don't know if you could retrofit a trigger on a slide but for this price, if you have to have a trigger for flattening notes then get yourself a Picc that has that and keep this one for practice. I just started trumpet playing a little bit after 35 year lay-off and this "toy" is going to make it fun to play again and I don't need an expensive horn. As far as I can tell, it is not a toy but a very well made instrument that sounds wonderful. I'm on my second day and I am happy with it. ... show more

  • Classic Cantabile Brass PT-196 Bb Piccolo Trumpet
Just received the horn. It is a beautiful instrument, looking similar to the Schilke. Valves are smooth, and quick. The sound and intonation is acceptable. For the price, I highly recommend it. I am a pro jazz trumpet player, and have an occasion to play a church gig. This will suit my needs.

  • Very impressive!
Update: Still an excellent trumpet. My brass ensemble loves it. FYI a friend also bought this model, and I traded him. His 4th valve slide pulls all the way out. Also, using the Bach 7E MP, I was able to bring the A pipe generally in tune. The mouthpiece makes the difference. The playability of this pic trumpet is excellent. For the low price yet solid build I highly recommend it for non-professionals. It has a beautiful sound and finish. It has an easy blow, including the very high notes. All slides move freely. The valve action is firm and free. B flat receiver-Essentially in tune from C up. Below C, up to one half step flat. Doesn’t matter to me because most PT music is written higher. A receiver-All notes are up to one half step flat. Unless the A pipe is modified it is unusable. To play in A you can use the B flat pipe pulled out a couple of inches. Comments-The receiver accepts trumpet MP, not cornet. Shipped from France. The included guarantee card is in German from a store called Kirstein.de. The provided MP is stamped JB 14A4A. If this is indeed a Schilke copy then it is an extra bonus. The PT has a SN stamped on it. It came with a soft case, not the hard case pictured. The lack of a spit valve is not a problem-shake it out or blow it out the bell. The 4th valve slide cannot be pulled all the way out (for cleaning) because it hits the bell. ... show more

  • Quality
These horns seem to range between super cheap junk and super expensive professional. This was a nice somewhat middle ground. I was nervous that I might be throwing money away, but this is in fact a good quality horn. It looks great, has a good heft to it, valves are solid, and the case is actually quite nice. I feel like I got a good buy on a niche instrument that won't get much use. ... show more

  • Seriously out of tune
There is no mechanical issue on my piccolo trumpet. It works smoothly if you oil it properly. But this is not a musical instrument, the pitches are so so so off.
