Top Amazon Reviews

  • Better than anticipated
Color: BOXIO TOILET Plus
Having lived with this beast for a bit, I thought I would write a review and maybe clear up some of the questionable information I'm seeing on the web regarding the Boxio unit. As an intro, we're live-aboards. We have lived on one or another vessel for going on ten years now, and we love it. We have always used a composting toilet, a DIY one that I came up with, (instructions on an Amazon pamphlet Here: https://www.amazon.com/Floating-Empire-composting-toilet-book-ebook/dp/B07P8JLF1J/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=don+elwell&sr=8-3) Unfortunately, on our new boat the design wasn't working well. For various reasons, it was hard to dump and clean. We were looking for another option (that we could afford) and the Boxio unit came available on Amazon, so we thought we'd give it a shot. Construction: The unit is small, compact, and quite stoutly built. Think (if you're an American) milk carton construction. The urine diverter is similarly solid, rather thicker plastic than I'd be led to expect. The internal containers for waste and urine are likewise molded plastic and are adequately solid. Assembly: is pretty simple. The unit came well packed, and all that is needed to assemble it is to screw in four post-and-screw assemblies on the four courners (a hex wrench and washer for use as a flat blade is provided) and to use an included cord to lace on the lid as a hinge. I had initially some questions about the strength of these little posts, but once installed, they seem quite solid. Use: The urine container keeps all odors away from your living quarters. We were at first concerned about the size, but the thing is obviously larger than it appears. We wind up dumping it on a daily basis, but it's usually only about half full. The solid waste container uses biodegradable liners (as an option. It would, of course, work fine without.) Dumping the waste us a matter of gathering up the sides of the little bag and twisting it to close. Very, very effective. The hemp biomass (provided with this kit) works well and can be used sparingly. We have, for years, used wood stove pellets as biomass (they're cheap and tidy) and have not attempted to use those in this particular application, but I see no reason why they, or coir, or sawdust wouldn't work just as well. The lid does an admirable job of keeping smells contained and flies out of the unit. I like that it fits snugly. Things we like: No odor at all, easy empty, compact design that simply blends into the environment when not in use. Things we dont particularly like: It's really low. We ordered the raised base, which should ameliorate that, but talk about a squatti potti. . .on the other hand it would fit easily on a small boat or in a cabin or van. There's a little detent in the seat/urine diverter at the front which is apparently intended to facilitate opening it, but there's really no way to get traction with it. I still wind up sticking my fingers where I'd rather not to open and dump the thing. As many have pointed out, the only way to empty the urine container is to unscrew the seal in the center and dump it out. While it has a handy carrying handle, the handle is in the way of the urine when you turn it over to dump it, and it's very nearly impossible to get every last drop of the pee out of the bottle. A side drain (and some folks have drilled one) on the top would fix this, or moving the handle to the edge. On the whole, though: This is a nice, compact, well thought out alternative to either a bucket or to the $1000 composting toilets available on the market. We're happy we bought it and it is, at least so far, working well for us. Don aboard the shantyboat "Dragonfly". ... show more

  • Fabulous and affordable.
Color: BOXIO TOILET Max+
Excellent and affordable! I've been using 5 gallon buckets with bags and pine shavings for more than 20 years, and they are reliable but not great, so I was looking for an improvement. THIS IS DEFINITELY AN IMPROVEMENT! I love that it's small enough to take with in a vehicle so I'm not stuck with unsafe or filthy conditions in a bathroom on the road. Thank you! After using it a few weeks, I find that it's a little hard for those of us who might have more ample hindquarters. I got a simple soft vinyl travel toilet seat, and I use it with this and then store it next to the Boxio. This works perfectly if you need it! 😊 ... show more

  • Ok waited a while - honest review …
Color: BOXIO TOILET Max+
The media could not be loaded. I’m full time RV and been using this thing for several months let me spew my thoughts… Overall I’m giving it 4 stars because it has a few draw backs but you can’t beat the price for a composting toilet which if your here reading this you probably already know they are very expensive kinda niche items… So I use Cedar shake from Walmart pet section, empty it about once a week. Despite what you may think in your mind it’s not fun. It’s not sanitary. And it’s every bit of a chore as it sounds like. So alot of moisture accumulates inside be prepared although I solved that with some modifications (read on) and the odor let’s just say is not pleasant. Emptying it is a chore. It’s quick and easy - just. Not pleasant. lol. But I made some enhancements that changed my world with this thing…. So another thing the little plastic deals that hold the top and bottom together - yeah they suck fall off constantly and I find the dog playing with them ā€œ ewwwwww ! ā€œ. I ended up screwing the two halves together and to heck with the ā€œstorage spaceā€. Modifications : Well, the main thing that sets this one apart from its crazy expensive brothers is the fact that they have a fan and ventilation. So I decided I’d just add that little feature. I bought a brushless DC 12v blower fan, some hose and some 5000 mesh super fine screen. (Keeps the little tiny bugs out). After I deleted the black tank there was this nice giant hole in the floor under it anyway so I went ahead and cut a nice big old hole in the bottom of the Lower half put the fan and tubes in there ran them down under the camper (intake / exhaust) and then up each side of the actual boxio towards front there is space above the urine container I cut holes and got pool hose fittings air goes in one side out the other and back down under the camper. This completely ELIMINATED the odor entirely and massively cut down on the moisture level inside the unit. Emptying it now isn’t as much of a ā€œchoreā€ and drastically improved my experience with it. Total cost of modifications like 30 bucks all items I found right here on Amazon. I used a dremel to make the holes and fill foam to seal the bottom. I am extremely happy with the mods and now I have zero odor what so ever. It’s even better than the factory flush commode but I don’t have to worry about dumping black tanks. In fact I sold the black tank on marketplace for about as much as I spent on Boxio lol. Some guy wanted it for a cargo trailer conversion. Anyway - overall I’ll give it 4 stars I think it would be PERFECT if it came with the blower feature like I added myself from factory. ... show more

  • Boxio German toilet
Color: BOXIO TOILET Max+
I purchased this during prime for $185. It was easy to put together. No parts were missing. I like its design. Very simple, but really smart and practical. It's kinda small and square, but it can hold a person's body weight without collapsing or tumbling over. And to have the urine and poop separated is just more hygienic and easier to manage. It's great to have for camping, for emergencies, or even convenience, if unable to walk to your bathroom during the night. I find the cost to be on the high side, but there's nothing else like it on the market. German products are known for their quality, so I am very satisfied with this toilet. I like having the extra bottom section to raise the height and store essentials. One could use pine pellets versus the hemp, but it comes with two bags of hemp to get you started. I'm going to order one accessory, the top cushion pad. Then it becomes a seat too. I'm a survival prepper, so this is a perfect addition to my essentials. ... show more
