  • great potty
Style: Premium 5.3-Gal Travel Toilet
this was my review on popupportal.com: I'm heading out for 4 days next week and as a first time cassette toilet owner i wanted to test the unit before getting out there. I finished testing Camco (41544) Portable Travel Toilet - i think i went Saturday morning to Wednesday morning. tl;dr: Positive experience! Get one :) DW would never be ok with me testing in the house, so i hid it in the shower of our downstairs bathroom. Everyone (dw, dd1, dd2) in the house uses the bathroom downstairs, but no one uses the shower, so the curtain stays closed - perfect hiding place and "testing site". I wanted to make sure it worked properly and that i could empty/clean out the cassette without issues. And since my pup isn't that big and i don't have an outside tent for the toilet, it would be in the pup, so I wanted to be sure it didn't smell. I used the orange TST pods - directions are vague - they say drop pod in and put in enough water to cover the pod. So that's what i did. I purposely didn't change a single bit of my regular routine - if i had to #1, i #1'ed, and if i had to #2, i #2'ed. I didn't try to conserve water with fewer pumps of the flush or try to use less (or special) toilet paper. The cassette did great. Sitting was a bit tight - I'm not tiny (6", 230#) and I'd prefer the seat to be longer/more oval, but it wasn't bad at all. The height is 16 inches off the floor - not regular toilet height but close enough and very comfortable. The overall size is compact - i had plenty of space to do my business in the shower :p Operating it was a breeze - everything worked exactly as advertised. I recommend laying a little tissue down first to make cleaning up easier. Open the hatch, take care of business, pump flush till it all goes down. if there are remnants you simply wipe with tp or lay the tissue down before. Don't worry about conserving water - flush flush. Shut the hatch, close the seat and seat cover. piece of cake. I'm a decent size fellow with a good appetite - lets just say I'm an ideal test subject. my cassette has a 5.3 gallon waste tank and i probably filled it half way in 4 days, maybe a little more. Keep in mind i didn't hold back on trips to toilet, TP, or flushing water. with a tank that size i think I'll be emptying it roughly at half full - i think it would get pretty heavy if it was totally full. the weight itself wouldn't bother me carrying it, but it would be awkward to empty at that weight. it's nice to have the extra capacity and that adds to the seat height too. Odors? none while not in use. no one in my family noticed a smell, even tho the cassette was just on the other side of the shower curtain when they were using the house loo. When i opened the hatch for business there was some ordor, but it was very muted. if someone was overly sensitive i think there are some additional pods you can get that help with scent - but over all i was so pleased at how little it smelled. the hatch works great keeping in smells, and after you flush and then close it, a little residue water pools on the hatch, which i imagine adds to the seal. Emptying - today i decided to end the test - it matched what i will be doing next week camping. i had watched videos (there are some english ones about boating thetfords that are spot on and very funny :) ) so i was prepared. i had a water container to put fresh water back in the tank to rinse it. overall it was smooth sailing. it smelled some, but again, very muted, not bad at all. having changed diapers for two girls for years i had zero issue with it. The material was also very broken down, hard to spot tissue bits, etc... very liquid. it all flowed out just fine. extend emptying tube, remove cap, flush the toilet, and dump while toilet flushes. the only thing i didn't do perfectly was keeping the tube end down as close to the toilet bowl water as possible and depressing the vent button immediately. there was some splashing (ew) but it was just a few drops and i won't make that mistake again ;-) Once the first main dump was done, i filled the tank with clean water, replaced the cap, and shook up the tank and re-emptied. i did that about 4 times - till the water ran clear. Wipe everything down with some tissue, and that was it - good to go. no one likes to deal with this stuff, but having the cassette is awesome. so far my best popup buy. ... show more

  • Game changer
Style: Standard 5.3-Gal Travel Toilet
I have a seasonal cabin with a high water table (cabin is on stilts) that would be expensive/difficult to have a conventional septic system installed. The cabin is used lightly almost every weekend (usually just me) I am able to dispose of the contents at home in a city sewer so that has been my solution. I have a room with a window dedicated to utilities and the chemical toilet. 1. The toilet with your choice of tank additive holds smells much better than 5 gallon buckets when in use and no smell after use. 2. I separate the top from the holding tank on transport and only bring the holding tank home. 3. I empty the tank into the toilet with the bathroom fan running and door closed when my wife is out of the house so I don't have to hear any whining. Your are dumping a septic tank into a toilet. It smells. I run the tub faucet and add water occasionally as I pour to water down the solids. This avoids kerplunking. The process is fast and the smell fades quick with the use of tank additives. I always clean the toilet with bleach when done to further eliminate whining. When I am at the cabin it just makes things much more civilized and enjoyable for me and my guests. The pain of dealing with the contents is short lived and doesn't bother me at all. I love this product. ... show more

  • Review from a disabled dude.
Style: Standard 5.3-Gal Travel Toilet
Ok I have had this commode for about a month now and I am ready to review. First let me explain why I got this to put it in perspective. I am not looking for sorrow or thoughts & prayers etc. I am currently 49 years old and I used to be very athletic and played allllllll kindsa sports as long as it was running. In 2003 I came down with Relapse Remitting Multiple Sclerosis. It was misdiagnosed so things just got worse and worse. In 2017 it developed into Primary Progressive MS and things spiraled downhill very quick. I can barely walk now, my balance is non existent etc. My usual bathroom is about 15 feet away and after falling various times I can no longer make it to there. I ended up holding "stuff" in and that was a definite "no no" because I was slowly poisoning myself and getting very close to renal sepsis and potentially dying. #2 does eventually end up coming out but it is in your undergarments. I ended up going like that for about a month then I figured there has to be something better. Enter this commode. Before MS I was 5'9" and about 150 lbs. I can barely stand now but I have lost quite a bit of weight. I am about 120 lbs now. I AM VERY THIN!!!! Keep that in mind. As far as sturdiness and construction this is great. The seat is hard and don't expect to get comfortable on it while using. For myself with difficulty with standing it does sit kind of low. Remember I am not tall. I had to put this in my room and if I could still move around like normal etc I would DEFINITELY put this on a makeshift platform to rise it up about 6". The seat and the seat opening is VERY small. Remember I am thin and even still when I do sit on it I cover the entire opening of the seat. Now this is for the guys! If you are "above average" down below there are problems. You are pressed up against the front which makes urinating "interesting" and if you are not careful while sitting you can FULL ON sit down on the testes (I did it twice) and there is no give with the seat but 100% pain! Or if there is water in the bottom of the bowl to aid in the next flush and you do not want yourself pressed up against the front and you re-situate yourself you will be in the water. As long as the lid is closed it will seal in odor but I have noticed that as soon as the top cover/ lid is opened up to use some of the odor will come out. The push pump for the "flush"/ rinse is very difficult to push. Remember I have PPMS and lost strength etc so it might be just me. I noticed that after the "flush" if you put a few inches of water after the use it drastically makes the next flush and cleaning easier. I suggest that after using for about a week gasses do build up and if not done right gasses and liquids will pop up. I usually "flush" while I am sitting on it and the "flush" and SLOWLY opening the flush piston to burp the gasses. I apologize if someone was looking for a review for camping or whatever I am speaking from a disabled person and not able to make it to my bathroom. I tried to answer any questions that were not answered for me as I was looking for a commode. ****** Jan 20, 2023 ~~~~~~ update ~~~~~~ I still have no complaints about this but some tips I now have. I have used this almost every day since October of 2022. I no longer put tissue inside of the tank. I now take the used tissue and put inside of the plastic bags almost all of us have from the grocery store? Yes those bags under your sink finally has use. 😆 BUT! BUT! Be sure to tie that bag in a tight knot after each use. The paper in the tank makes for a difficult and messy emptying. The included fresh tabs were dust and did nothing when used. I found that after filling the tank up a few tablespoons of bleach (slight pour) works WONDERS! It breaks the solids down and it is like smelling an indoor pool when flushed. 😁 I do clean it with toilet bowl cleaner and a sponge. It is ports and will/ does trap odors. The cleaner fixes that real quick because the water only trickles down one side. It does not get the entire bowl. A few sprays of toilet bowl cleaner and a few rubs on the side rectifies that problem. If you have bleach in the water (like me) make sure the cleaner DOES NOT have ammonia in it. Unless you wanna create a poisonous gas. Just be sure of that and you will be fine. The cleaner also lubricates the flusher without damaging the seal for the odor. The side latches are JUNK though. ... show more
